So the Fallout 4 trailer is out.  At the very end, the vault dweller/wanderer/walker speaks to the dog.  Since Bethesda appears to be giving the Fallout main character a voice, it seems reasonable their next Elder Scrolls game will also give the main character a voice.  Why is this important?  Fallout and Elder Scrolls were just about the last "real" franchise to have a silent protagonist.

That means the Warden from DAO can come back- and they can have a voice.  We are now officially out of the age of the silent protagonist.  People will now expect to hear the main character and so be comfortable knowing that the individual has a distinct voice.  This means there is now plenty of reason to be confident in bringing the Warden back for a DLC (or two) as an NPC for the Inquisitor.  The issue of voice is resolved.

Good days ahead!

That bit at the end didn't confirm anything of the sort.

And no, it does not mean they can just go ahead and give The Warden a voice, numbnuts.

If the devs, and I know they've weighed in on the HOF reappearing, felt it could work at some point I'd be for it :)  In fact, I'd be interested to see what they came up with.

Well, this most certainly isn't my Vault Dweller.

My Vault Dweller hates talking & dogs, and loves blood magic.

Thx for breaking my character, Bethesda.

LOL so true...

Anyways, i'm all for playing a Warden in a DLC or something...that being said. Let it die people. Devs have said on multiple occaisions now that the Warden is not going to come back.

In a setting like Dragon Age, I don't think being dead (even very, very dead) is a condition that prevents people from speaking... :D

But I get what you mean.

I am not sure if I want my warden back or not, voiced or unvoiced.

EDIT: and even of the Fallout 4 trailer were a sign that absolutely confirms that silent protagonists are a thing of the past, I am not sure how this would confirm that the Warden will come back.

What I actually don't understand is, why not?

The warden actually has different combat voices so why just don't use them instead of new voices?

So he wasn't quiet at all =] ... and the problem has been fixed. :wizard:

Because there is no way that they will be able to cover all of the possible personalities for the Warden in a way that would be satisfying to all the people clamoring for his return. Heck, Hawke had a significantly smaller range of personalities, and some people think Bioware messed him up in DAI. If they ever bring the Warden back, these forums will become a toxic waste dump of hatred from the Warden fans.

Because the one "voice" that I used is deceased  :(  Robin Sachs

Laidlaw said HoF won't happen in the upcoming DLC. But I think it's still possible for a future expansion. The voice issue is the biggest hurdle. They would need to get all the same voice actors back, and find a good replacement voice for the late Robin Sachs. Having a new voice for the Hero won't work, as I can tell you having recreated my Hero in Inquisition. Their voices are similar and have the same accent, but it still isn't enough. The voices must be the same.

The problem here is that this will require a ton of voice recording. But there may be ways to get around this.

Voice is a problem, so is characterization.  Unless the Warden comes back as a PC, we'll run into the same issue as Hawke and his blood magic hating.

Frankly I don't think touching that headache is worth the trouble.

Naysayers aside, I would much appreciate a voiced Hero of Ferelden making a reappearance. Pick a slate of vocal options like they did with the Inquisitor's four choices, and just let the fans go with the one that they prefer plus as an option code in a dialogue wheel for the "silent majority" [if it even is that] and let him/her return!

This isn't rocket science and this should be better pegged as a no-brainer kind of idea; not that Bioware will be prone to relent?

No.

And the risk that this might actually happen someday only makes me believe that to do the ultimate sacrifice is the best option for the warden. So there´s no chance for Bioware to screw things up for him/her.

I remember reading that if possible everyone from the previous DA series would have been in DAI, so that would have been the best time for a cameo. I think it would have been amazing if during the Adamant quest, when trying to reason with Clarel, the HOF showed up to stop all the nonsense before Erimond reveals his hand and all goes to hell. Having either Alistair (especially if romanced) or Loghain react to seeing them after so long would have been a nice touch too.

After DAI though, despite the hints we might at least get some closure in a future game, it's been made pretty clear the HOF's story is over, as well as any chance of them appearing physically in a future game.

I really don't see a big deal about a voice actor tbh now that I think about it. We hardly hear them speak in DAO, so a voice wouldn't be overly drastic and many of the current ones could do it no problem, same with customizing their look. I think it's their fear of failing to live up to what the fans expect and if they fail, the backlash would be unpleasant. The Warden was many people's first experience with DA and is held in high regard and valued to the point that if they were done wrong or killed off, it would probably have been worse than the Fade choice. They probably dont know where to go with the Warden, since there's too many choices that could contradict the players like Hawke hating blood magic, but being a blood mage. It's like BW trying to write fanfiction using your Warden. They had more depth and to make a vanilla one for all to relate to is impossible.

Bioware has demonstrated such excellent story-telling chops throughout their various franchise games that just leaving the Warden's fate open ended seems like such a waste.

We don't actually have to "see" the Warden again, given that they specifically said that the HoF is off pursuing a cure for the Calling, personally I see a terrific way to tie that all up in one sweet, melancholy lore moment.

Have some character, whether the Inquisitor, or one of the original Warden's companions, or a future lead character find his final resting place. The cure discovered, similar to Avernus potion, but formulated too late to spare our beloved hero from succumbing to his afflcition. His/her honored corpse nearby (possibly a suicide to avoid becoming a blight ghoul) and a journal, scroll or note with final comments.

There wouldn't be a dry eye in the house?

@Fearsome1

Actually much of their writing is just above mediocre with the occasional moment of greatness.  But I digress.  The Warden's fate is left open ended so the player can imagine what happens to them.  Unfortunately some people aren't satisfied with that and will consider a character's fate open ended until they lie dead.  Some not even then.

Finding the Warden dead right next to something that could have saved them sounds like something many would take as a slap to the face, not a tear jerker.  And that's why they should just leave it open ended, because there's no way to wrap up the Warden's fate in a way that won't have massive backlash.  It's not worth it, they'd best leave it alone.

They won't bring the Warden back, especially not as an NPC.
