I just built my first gaming PC not that long ago and bought the ME trilogy for $9 on amazon today.  I have played a lot of ME3 multiplayer on the xbox and was wondering what the PC community is like these days.

I look forward to playing with high ego master race PC players  :P

Many of us don't have nearly as big of an ego as we are made out to. As for the PC community I played on 360 for 900 hours before I switched to PC, and I really didn't notice much of a difference in the pug community on PC compared to 360.

I think the main difference is that almost no one on PC speaks.

I'm going to have to get used to a mouse and keyboard.  Is it possible to play with a controller? Im still getting used to this PC thing.

Keyboard & mouse is superior for games like this. You can aim better and faster with a mouse, all it takes is a little practice until you no longer have to think about what button to push.

I don't have a gaming keyboard or mouse. Will this still be the better control option?

This is the most important thing.

I wouldn't even call it a PC community, because community implies communication.

Well, a good mouse is rather important. Doesn't have to be an expensive one with a dozen buttons and LED gimmicks but well... something better than the standard mouse you got with your PC is necessary simply because those cheap ones don't last long. Personally I'm very happy with my Logitech Performance MX mouse. I'd also recommend a mouse pad with wrist support and something similiar for the keyboard. It makes a huge difference.

I'm still using an ~6 year old Cherry keyboard because its keys have steel springs and never wear out. Still looks like new, too. This is something you have to try for yourself. Some people want more tactile feedback, some want less. Some are irritated by the noise a mechanical keyboard makes, some don't even notice it.

It's all a bit try&error ... but there's something for everyone.

I played with a shitty mouse for 2 years and it was all right. Good surface is more important. But a basic gaming mouse is still better and not expensive. Probably cheaper than a USB gaming pad

While nice to have, you do not need a gaming specific keyboard or mouse. What you really do need is a wired(*) mouse, and preferably wired keyboard. The basic wired models from MS or Logitech are about$10 apiece.

It'll take you a few days to get used to KB&M gaming. It took me a couple weeks, but I'm the worst player of ME3MP there has ever been, so it should be easier for anyone of normal ability.

(*) Yes, I know you get wireless gaming mice, but normal everyday wireless mice do truly suck for gaming.

Logitech makes good mouses.  I have a G400 Optical Mouse that only has two little thumb clickey buttons, but that's really all that's needed.  DPI adjustment buttons above and below the center scrollwheel.

I also got some adhesive velcro strips and used them to attach my mousepad to my desk's mouse platform, so the pad doesn't slide around.  At all.  That's a big help.

For keyboard I like the Microsoft ergonomic keyboard, it's the one that's split in halves.  It might not be for everyone but it is extremely comfortable.

There's plenty of good programs like Ventrilo, Mumble, Teamspeak.  Though I haven't met any PC ME3 players who use them.

I've got those installed... but haven't used them in years. Only makes sense to use something like that with friends, not with randoms.

The in game voice chat works - mostly. (It hates my microphones, all of them.)

Some people use Skype as well.

Yeah, the OP was asking about party chat, and since he comes from Xbox we understand that he means Xbox Live Party, i.e., friends-only group chat. So one can gossip about the pugs without them hearing ;)

I would say getting a higher quality mouse is higher priority than the keyboard. I personally spent 20$ just to get a backlit keyboard, and I spent 30$ on my mouse to have one with a few thumb buttons, a programmable macro button, and DPI settings (even though I never use them). However, what really made a difference for me is I bought a nice large open mouse pad that gives me lots of room to move, and it made playing so much more comfortable.

This is the most important thing.

I wouldn't even call it a PC community, because community implies communication.

I have met a few people over my 150 hours who spoke, but yes for the most part it is silent

Me and my friends use Skype I won't claim it is better than other programs it is just what we have gotten familiar with. It also allows us to talk with our friends who are on Xbox one who refuse to ascend :P

Teamspeak, Ventrillo, Skype, in-game voice chat, among other things.

Some people use Steam chat (topkek) and Origin recently introduced a feature like that as well, but I don't quite think it works.

As for controls - JUST GET ANY MOUSE AND A KEYBOARD, REALLY.

Once you acquire the taste for finer things, get some decent gaming mouse.

Somebody in a game today hummed wordlessly (but quite tunefully) the entire time. Does that count? :)

It only rolled out in today's update, so we'll need some time to figure out if and how it works :)
