Dont get me wrong i would love a story focused Fallout game with a set protagonist but only if its a spin-off, the main series should stay as it is...just add a voiced protagonist
Fallout 4: Male only. Story focused. Might not have character creation/customization.

Seems weird for the new game to have a set character as the series has had customised protagonists since Fallout 1. Plus doesn't sound like a Bethesda game to me
Spot on.

If Tod Howard wants to break the golden rule that's kept his games alive for years and profitable then sure.
But I don't think he's that crazy.

Not sure I believe it, the Bethesda Fallout/Elder Scrolls games are only really popular because they are big and allow you to customize your character (and if you are on PC mods that allow you to further expand the character customization options and give your character a fully functional and customized animated penis, though if they plan to re-introduce paid mods it might just put the final nail in that coffin), If Bethesda were to get rid of the customized main protagonist (or at the very least gender option as the leak suggests) in favor of a more defined main character then they would be shitting the bed big time. The very fact that the main character has little to define them seems to be one of the biggest draws of these games, to take that away would result in a shitstorm of epic proportions.
Besides Bethesda really don't have the story telling chops to pull this sort of thing off, best they stick to doing what they do best which is doing nothing and allowing the player to fill the gaps with their imagination.
That said I never really got into Fallout 3 and don't really care what they do with Fallout 4, if they do go this route the internet drama is sure to be interesting. If they did go this route (which I currently am having a hard time believing they would) what do you think the 'fallout' would be? Mass Effect 3 proportions or bigger?

I love how the story narration calls you out on it. All because Beth couldn't afford to hire Ron Pearlman twice.
They spent the entire audio budget getting Jack Nicholson...
Never underestimate this man

I'm going to reserve my opinion on the matter until I see the final product, but Fallout 3 with prettier graphics isn't cutting it anymore if they want to stay relevant. If a set protagonist will help them deliver a far more compelling narrative than so be it.

Building the game using two different engines for current and previous gen would be rather expensive and a nightmare for bug testing and patching. I can't really see a company putting that much investment for last gen, especially since by the time this game is released more people would have upgraded to PS4/XBox1. It could still come to PS3/360 but it would make more financial sense and be easier on the programmers to use the same engine, though again the current gen versions of the game could suffer.

I would not be surprised if the game comes out on last gen consoles, apart from the lighting (which will not be in the finished product for either gen) the graphics do look like they were meant for last gen consoles, though the idea that they would release the last gen ports a year after the current gen versions as the leak suggests does seem a risky proposition in my eyes.

If it was made using the rage engine then there's no reason to have a separate engine for last gen, it could port over without much fanfare - only things like number of npc's would hurt. As for a preset protagonist and a linear campaign, at some point you have to wonder what's so great about being more cinematic and personal if it hurts the entire reason you're playing an rpg, why not just make a game like The Last of Us and move on?

Yeah not buying it.
The biggest problem will be that it will be yet another Bethesda title suffering from all the tropes common in Bethesda developed games. Hopefully after we get a true sequel to New Vegas developed by Obsidian.
The Bethesda Fallout's should really be the spin-offs with their poor writing and little connection to the previous games and factions of the world.

Were it a different IP, that might happen. Even Obsidian(who's known for character customization as a legacy feature) has done that route with Alpha Protocol.
But adding a gender/cosmetic restriction to a franchise that's had it for over 15 years is one hell of a gamble. A little *too* big.

(haven't been on the forum for ages, but FO4 news stirred me up)
WRT the rumored forced male protagonist for FO4:
Why can't they make the story for the protagonist gender-neutral, and get both a male and female voice actor? Namewise, they could even assign a gender-neutral name if necessary for NPCs to call the protagonist by.
We already have Commander Shepard as a prime example. I'm sure there're other story-based games that enable players to choose PC gender and have separate male/female voices accordingly
---------------
There's a lot of things I didn't like about FO3 that I feel Obsidian did a lot better with FNV (I never touched FO3 after FNV while playing the heck outta the latter).
Had Obsidian been the one to work on FO4, I would have pre-ordered in a heartbeat. I don't know if Bethesda will learn anything from Obsidian's FNV, so I'm just gonna adopt a wait-and-see attitude and see if FO4 will be nuke the gaming world or fall flat on its face.

This had better be one cruel, dirty rumor.......
A male-only character would be such a step backwards for the game's development and doesn't make sense considering the freedom allowed in previous Bethesda rpg titles. I'm real tired of the mid-thirties, white, male protagonist template seen in games and movies.

It wont happen, i am 99,9% sure of it. But we have to wait for E3 to get all the info i suspect, they probably won't say anything else before that. The voice part may be true though. Jennifer Hale as fem Vault Dweller and Troy Baker as male, that is guaranteed ![]()

I've had my fair share of surprises with game developers shifting style or evolving in ways I did not expect, so I will reserve judgemenet as to whether Bethesda SoftWorks would be able to make an RPG like this.
If they're just the same ol' bethesda who made Skyrim and Fallout 3... then... I think focusing so much on story and a genuine protagonist is a bad call. They just can't even get the basics of drama right, and the whole reason why their games sell so good is because they latch on to a lot of people who actually don't care about the stories. Those people just want to explore a vast world and discover its secrets to brag about it to their friends in school and ****.
No customization sounds far fetched but if it's true, then I'm skeptical.
