I wanted to read some of the things you guys had to say in regards to what you think worked well with the game and things that you wouldn't want to see again in the series.

Things I like:

- How the armour changes depending on which companion is equipping it.

- The Exploration. A lot of the areas were VERY well done.

- Dragon Fights. So unique and very challenging, overall a fun thing to do.

- The Black Emporium. So glad they brought this back, so much fun.

- Companions. Some of them were very interesting, especially ones I thought I would hate like Vivienne.

- Banter. The banter here was very entertaining and I also enjoyed how I could interact with it every now and then.

- Skyhold. I loved having my own castle type thing where my companions will be hanging out, people could be walking around, and being able to change the decor!

- Crafting system. On my first playthrough I pretty much ignored it completely, mainly because I just wanted to finish the story and it was also kind of challenging. But in my second playthrough I've been crafting lots and it is so much fun!

- Character Creation. This is my favourite one in the series, so diverse and literally so much fun, I could spend so long in that.

- The Graphics. They are so much better here (obviously) and the game can truly look very gorgeous.

Things I Dislike:

- The coin system. (I would love to have the old system back with Sovereigns, Silver and Copper. It seems like a very lore central thing.)

- No cutscenes in dialogue. When you talk to NPC's there are no cutscenes, the camera is in one position and can be rotated around the Inquisitor and who they are speaking to. I really dislike this very much, it removes you from the emotional state of the NPC making their quests seem pointless, please bring cutscenes back in the next game.

- Lack of cities. I loved Kirkwall and Denerim back in the old games and would have loved to have explored an open area city- The Grand Cathedral anyone?

- Proper Auto Attack. On PC this was very frustrating, they kind of implemented it with a patch but it was not properly done.

- No Healing spells. I love healing spells and really do miss them from the game.

- No tooltips on the power bar. Very annoying to not include, almost all RPG's have them, still bugs me to this day.

- Auto Zoom out in combat. So annoying when the camera zooms out when you begin in combat and you aren't allowed to zoom back in, I understand it's implementation but I feel it was very unnecessary. At least allow us to zoom back in.

- Hair Styles. Kind of disappointed by the lack of hairstyles in the game and also the fact that they are shared between males and females. Would have been nice to give each gender their own uniques hairstyles.

- 8 powers only. I also do not like the fact that we are restricted to 8 powers during a fight. I dread it when I get to the point where I have 9 skills and can only use 8 of them. No idea which to remove.

I will continue to update my list when I think of some others. So what are some of yours?

*snip*

I agree with everything on your list to varying degrees. I have to make a comment in response to what you wrote about the hair though. There is no downside to having hairs available to males and females... in theory. The problem is that they went about doing so terribly. They barely made any feminine styles, and not very many good masculine styles, then combined them to appear like they made an acceptable amount of hairs. What they should do, is make a bunch of great hairs for males and females separately (you know, to avoid females having sideburns and receding hairlines), then after that, make them available to both genders. Bam! Apparently that concept was too hard for them though.

Like:

Character creation. Love or hate the hair options, I'm loving the actual face model settings.

Companions. DA always has pretty lively companions so that's nothing new, but this is probably my favorite of the lot.

Soundtrack. I love Morris' work.

Dragon fights. Despite there being so many of them, each fight still feels like an event, made better by finally having companion commentary with certain intros and finishing them off.

Crafting. I'm hooked on creating weapons and armor and disregarding most of my loot.

Archery. I've always loved the idea of having my protagonist in the DAverse be an archer, but I've always found the gameplay of it in the past painfully unsatisfying. Much like DA2's mage, I can finally love having an archer PC and stick with it for the entire game.

Banter interaction. In DA:O we were passive observers of companion banter, and Hawke occasionally had autodialogue as contribution, but here we can actively choose an option from time to time. That's a nice step up.

Story. Despite feeling relatively scant compared to the other two games, I'm rather fond of a lot of the reveals we were given.

Environment. The landscape is certainly beautiful to look at.

Dislike:

Static NPC's. The world has a fair amount of activity, but most NPC's are practically statues. Characters stand in the same place forever and there's no ambient activity, or even a fair amount of ambient dialogue beyond one or two lines to give the illusion that someone was just finishing a conversation. The environment doesn't feel as alive because of it.

The 8 slot restriction. Simply having the other abilities we have be available via the wheel would've been simple enough to implement, so it's baffling that we can't in the single player campaign.

Currency. I dislike the lack of varied coins in our PC's purse. When my Inquisitor has 10k gold, it just seems like Credits.

Cities, or lack thereof. The one proper city we get is basically a fairly lifeless market square. Inquisition is all woods, and no urban, which is kind of a shame.

Looting animation. There's really no benefit here. It simply makes collecting anything pad time on to the activities you're doing.

The only reason I see this as an issue is because the devs would probably be like "Hey, if we share the hair between both genders there's no point in creating any more since they have a range of selections." Whereas I feel if they didn't share them, they would have been able to create unique hairstyles for both genders that could also please the LGBT community.

Things I like:

- the CC in general, I love the face sliders and eye colors

- the companions

- the banter

- the armor tinting. (I'm addicted to Nug Skin, soo pretty  )

- the scenery. I love just standing on a high point and looking around.

- the soundtrack

- the High Dragons (their look and fighting them)

- being able to play different races and people actually responding to it.

- Customizing Skyhold

I don't like:

- the light in the CC. Faces that looked good in the CC will (mostly) look horrible ingame.

- that when I use the tac-cam to look at the weaknesses of an enemy, the tac-cam will teleport me down from the rock/high point on which I'm standing. I'm standing up there, so that I don't get hit. Teleporting the chara down is suicide if you're surrounded by enemies.

That's it for now, maybe later more.  :D

I agree on all points.

add to dislike

- the combat gameplay - spirit and nature damage are completely rationalized away (bees a funny, but not worth it) every single enemy is in face to face combat overpowert.

- terrible mage spell books - give back the variety, please

- I miss true buffs

Likes:

1- Companions.  I liked them, both in terms of their actual personalities, as well as the quests/tasks/banter associated with them.  This has always been a BioWare strength.

2-More maps.  DA2 suffered from a lack of different locals to visit.

3-Graffics.  Solid improvement in graphics over the first two games.

4-Main story.  This is going to be on both lists, but for different reasons.  On the "like" list, I listed the story because I thought the story missions we did get were engaging and fun.

5-Replayability.  Choosing between mages and templars allowed the player a different play through at various points, whether it be different missions or different bosses/tasks to complete.  That's always key for me in a RPG.

Dislikes:

1-Open world felt so dull.  Yes, it was nice to be able to explore, but too often the quests were boring fetch quests with zero detail or depth involved.  If you're going to do open world, take a page out of how Bethesda (or the new Witcher game) does sidequests in an open world.

2-Main story.  And here's the negative part.  IMO, it was way too short.  So much more could have been added if they didn't spend so much time on those open world sidequests.  There were maybe 2 or 3 maps too many for sidequests, when that time and energy could have been spent fleshing out the main story by another mission or two.

3-No Sandal!

4-This ties in with #1, but about 80% of the quests were boring fetch quests where you literally do nothing but go from point A to point B, pick up an item, then bring it somewhere.  No real depth, no backstory, no long dialogue with the quest giver upon receiving or completing the quest.

Yes... but it's too bad it almost never happened.

Yeah, that's what I figure went through their heads, which is unfortunate. Though I have no idea how hair relates to the LGBT community

Things I dislike:
The paraphrase system

I thought this was their best iteration of that system, despite it failing a fair bit. I'd like them to keep it, and show you the whole line in subtitles if you hover over the option for a second.

It's easily BioWare's best paraphrase system.

I'd still like to scrap it and go with full text options (ideally with a silent protagonist).

Assuming they don't return to silent protagonists though, wouldn't revealing a full line if you hovered over a paraphrase be ideal?

Definitely not. And I really, really am not trying to sound rude, but you might consider researching transgender people, even just minimally. Transgender people =/= some middle ground between genders. Most that you see will probably sport conventional "masculine" or "feminine" styles depending on their gender, exactly the same as everyone else. More importantly though, hairstyles being associated with gender is pretty silly. People just like the hair they like; don't buy into stereotypes about things like that.

Like more detailed crafting system for customizing weapons and armor; Dislike lessened customization system for the actual character (eg; Attributes, weapon restrictions).

Like the more involved NPC populace (eg; reps, Agents, leaders, etc); Dislike those that simply will not move out of the way.

Like the new potion planning system with fewer elixirs; Dislike fewer ability & spell quickslots for characters.

Like the new alchemy system; Dislike having to be so close to harvest materials (Auto-harvest feature perhaps?).

Like the newer graphics, textures, music, sound and visual FX (also setting options help here a lot); Dislike not being able to target portraits, and not locking the quickbar to avoid clearing it during combat.

It would be ideal if we just saw the full line first without the paraphrase. If the paraphrase isn't something my character actually says, then it serves no purpose whatsoever.

I would argue that its purpose is to decrease clutter. Imagine seeing the whole first line of dialogue in every direction of the wheel at once. You couldn't see half the screen. Again, I support seeing the whole line, but it doesn't need to clutter everything and we can please both groups, I would think.

hmm

Likes:

-Inquisitor is step in the right direction for "voiced blank slates"

-Most of the characters are pretty good

-Companions are much more 'alive' with their walking around and doing their own thing a lot of the time

-war table (if somewhat overused)

-Exploration

-Vast codex info

-CC options (besides hair)

Dislikes

-Gameplay, artificial 8 slot restriction and useless tac cam

-Romances

-Much of the game felt very tame and "safe" understandable after ME3 and DA2 but still irritating

-Fetch Quests

-Main Storyline

-Racial options feel like a waste

-Hairstyles

Likes:

-- The Bard

-- The ability to customize the Inquisitors backstory in dialogue options.

-- Companions had unique looks without wearing the same clothes for 7 years.

-- More casual conversations and interactions with advisors and companions.

-- Inquisitor’s dialogue felt more natural; switching between aggressive, diplomatic and sarcastic Hawke in the same conversation gave me mood whiplash

-- Armor tinting

-- War table

-- Skyhold customization

-- Judgements

-- Lore <3

-- Cullen <3 <3

Dislikes:

-- Open world is too open. Some of these gorgeous areas needed more things to do in them.

-- Need more memorable NPCs and quest givers.

-- Shiny, shiny everything. It was a long time before I could look at Josephine without squinting.

-- The Keeps were wasted. They should have been true quest/trade hubs.

-- “Tactics”

-- How long it took for the Inquisitions soldiers to kill nugs and dogs and bring me their skins.

-- That the Inquisitions soldiers are only capable of killing nugs and dogs.

Off the top of my head ...

I like:

- the characters. The companions are probably my favourite group of BioWare companions ever, and that's saying something. And it's not just them, but the whole Inquisition and most of the supporting cast.

- The environments. BioWare hasn't made a game with a real sense of exploration since BG1. I hope they keep it up.

- Race choice! So happy I can play a dwarf again  .

- This incarnation of the dialogue wheel is the best so far. Hope they keep it basically the same for DA4.

- The music.

I do not like:

- The absence of a full Tactics system. This is the game's only really serious weakness from my point of view :( .

- Both the beginning and the ending of the game have serious pacing issues.

- I wish we'd got to learn more about Corypheus as a character, especially on the mage path. As it is, he comes across as generically villainous even though his motivations are actually more interesting than that.

- Beige pyjamas. Ugh.

- The lighting in the character creator is terrible ... again. I know BioWare heard the complaints about this, because I was literally there while people complained to Mark Darrah and Mike Laidlaw about it. So why is it still awful?

I dunno. Music that plays perpetually in the background gets kind of wearisome for me, though it does seem to play constantly for me in this game. In Origins, I felt like it was too much. I disliked the background music in Denerim after a while and as nice as the camp music sounded in the beginning, I grew tired of that one too. I liked DA2's ambient music more, but it's pretty much the same deal there. I admit that I kinda hate the ME1 Normandy theme now.

Obviously people have different opinions on this, but my immersion actually gets broken because of the lack of music. Let me explain. In most games, there is ambient music. Ambiance isn't supposed to really be noticed consciously, just subconsciously, to set a tone in the same way non-ambient music does otherwise. I also find it's nice on subsequent playthroughs because nostalgia is a very effective tool. An example:

Spoiler

Anyway, when I'm strolling through Thedas in DA:I, I just feel a bit disconnected to the world because of the "deafening silence". Footstepsfootstepsfootsteps. It makes me realize how empty the place is, and that's bad. Then, every few minutes, a track will all of a sudden break that silence, and I'll think: "Oh, right, music plays sometimes, because I'm playing a game." Immersion broken. Then after 30 or so seconds, it fades out, and my immersion is broken again.

It's also odd because not only do most games have music most of the time, but Skyrim specifically had very memorable, beautiful exploration and ambient music. I guess they missed that when they were trying to figure out why people liked it.

Edit: Put spoiler tags on spoiler. Why are we discussing what is good and bad about the game in the non-spoilers section?

The clutter exists largely because of the wheel. If the hub of the interface were on the edge of the screen rather than in the middle, there would be more space for sialogue options.

Also, providing full text - even as an option - would require a change to how the games are written. So you're not going to please both groups. Pleasing one necessarily disadvantages the other.

  • more romance choices
  • the beautiful world (the seaaaaaa!)
  • crafting
  • Skyhold
  • transgender characters
  • the villas - love all of them, the ghost story especially
  • gardening
  • banter
  • music
  • quest divergence and Keep choices affecting story (though I messed up on my import)
  • gutwrenching decisions
  • capturing keeps
  • lore and letters
  • the Tarot cards <3
  • the female Inquisitor's voice - the British one. It's perfect.
  • optional dragon battles and usually having the choice to avoid killing animals
  • the boots! They're lovely. So many kinds of boots.

Dislike:

  • the timers in Wicked Hearts
  • anything beige
  • not enough romance and companion interactions (there can never be enough though)
  • limited cities
  • boingy tactics camera
  • 8 spell limit, ugh!
  • the hairstyles
  • feeling pressured to farm loot for schematics
  • feeling a bit aimless - why am I going to this map again? Because I can't send an agent to investigate the shards while my clan is being wiped out offscreen?
  • finding purple loot too late for it to be useful
  • male animations for female characters
  • having nothing to do in my bedroom - it's so beautiful, but there's no reason to spend time there
