I know you can make more later that's better, but the stuff you get in the beginning of the game is garbage. Like, it's great compared to your actual starting gear, but I get to Hinterlands, loot one chest, and immediately get better armor and a better weapon. Immediately. Makes me sad that this "special" armor is so worthless. No I don't think it should last through the game or anything, that'd be silly, but it should last a little longer than the first thing you loot after you get to the first actual zone in the game.

Eh it really depends on the difficulty you're playing on and your goals. On my SnS warrior I use only swords -- never the higher dps axe or mace -- because I like them, so I do use the 1h sword for quite a bit into Hinterlands. I also do keep some things for appearance over others. When newer swords swords start to get 10+ higher in base damage that is when I typically change them out.

I like the sword and staff, the rest I discard. I think the armor is hideous.

I hate the armor. I never use it under any circumstances. I'd rather deal with the slightly poorer stats for a couple hours of playtime before I find something better. I do like the staff though. I'll usually make a pretty decent staff with the higher level mat you get at Skyhold. The sword is OK, but even there it's easy to make nicer swords. The Black Emporium kind of makes this significantly worse though.

I actually quite like the armour. Not the best in the game, but it makes for some nice variety from the otherwise pretty similar gear, especially for races with less unique ones (Qunari....).

The staff, shield and 1h sword are good, the other weapons, much less so. The dagger is doubly bad, as you only get one so have to pair it up with a completely different looking weapon until you get to the point you can craft them.

There is an easy solution for this problem, don't loot anything.

My inquisitor s use only the weapon until they find better things or schematic and materials. The armour is always good to get gold in the beginning. ^^

Main issue is that they want it be useful but also balanced to the point of the game you are currently at.  I have played games that gave other powerful stuff at the beginning when you took part in a promotion or pre-order and the stuff just broke the game since it was so powerful which ruined the experience.

DAO did that. Remember that dagger, "The Edge". You hardly needed another weapon the whole game.

I use it for my "going to town" outfit. About the only time I use something for dressing up.  :P

I think the starting kit's fine.  You get some pretty decent stuff that can give you a bit of an edge in the Hinterlands, long enough to collect enough materials and gather enough loot to do whatever else you think works better.  I never bother with the armor, because I think it looks stupid, no matter how much fire protection it provides, but it's worth some nice coin.  The fire staff gets given to Solas when I've got enough drakestone to do something in the 55 DPS range, and eventually gets sold.  The schematics are pretty decent, even at higher levels, and that is a plus by itself.

If there had been more difference between preorder bonus items and standard loot, folks could legitimately claim that they were being pressured to preorder.  This way, you get a little perk right at the beginning, but it's not a big deal if you don't because there's plenty more later.  That's fair enough.

To be honest I think the DA:I approach to this has been the best I have seen for promotional gear. You get a bunch of gear that you can use to start that I find is variable in how long it lasts because one good Rng roll from a chest or loot drop can eclipse the gear, but you are given schematics to replace the gear that can last you for greater than half the game. This means you actually have something that is balanced through many stages because it uses crafting material you acquire in game.

I think this solves the balance issue and gives players a nice cosmetic bonus. Now I agree with others that the armour doesn't really do it for me but it was well made the details are pretty good it just doesn't appeal to my sensibilities. The biggest problem with bonus starting gear in a progression based game is almost always the starting levels are the levels you transition past the quickest, so you don't really get any enjoyment out of the gear because you out level it very quickly. In the past many developers have tried to boost the power of starting gear to make it last longer but in so doing break the very balance of the game they tried to create. I think this was a great design choice on bioware's part.

When you give it the right Materials the schematics make for powerful armour and weapons

I kinda like the armor appearance, atleast until I get my hand on the Dragon Hunter armor.
