EWWWWWW METACRITIC! That's that site where reviews are chosen across the internet seemingly entirely at random to make some bullshit overall score.

Witcher 2...? Linear???

Sim... I think you need to get me the real Witcher 2. Apparently I've been playing the wrong one.

I wanted a true open world game without any restrictions..That said i really enjoyed W2 for it's story and characters....

Why don't you play W3 first and then comment here?

How many of you played the game here? ..Hardcore Bioware fans are notorious for bashing other RPG games without even playing them...

I haven't played it yet. Or DA:I. I'm pretty much just a neutral party here. I'm just pointing out that metacritic is a pile of ****.

As a "hardcore" Bioware fan (or used to), I have to say Wticher 3 is much better than DA and ME series. The world immersion, character  development and interaction quest design and overall quality control in TW3 sets new benchmark for future PC RPGs, Just like Baldur's Gate and KOTOR did.

Why would you ever be a hardcore fan of any developer? Seems stupid, be a fan of games.

Exactly. Call of Duty is better than both franchises.

I though that CoD being better was automatically applied to every thread that doesn't explicitly say Call of Duty in its title.

It should be, but you'd be surprised at how many blind fanboys there are who can't see it. This thread is a good example.

'Muh Inquisition'
'Muh Witcher'

If gaming were a dining experience, Call of Duty is five star French cuisine, while Witcher and Dragon Age are leftover burgers at McDonalds at 1am.

In terms of sales and popularity? Yes, that is correct.

In terms of good writing, characters and quest design? **** no.

This one I find funny as I have seen reviews were they had complaints about dull fetch quests.

While it is true that the Witcher 3 does have it's share of filler content such as treasure hunts and bandit stashes it still does not change the fact that the Witcher 3 also has a great wealth of quality content, so much so that it doesn't need a lot of the filler content to pad out it's length, it still has great side quests and story content, a beautiful and interesting world to explore.

Just because we praise the game does not mean we are blind to some of it's shortcomings, however to focus on the poorer aspects of the game and ignore what makes it so brilliant would be a disservice to such a wonderful game and the RPG genre as a whole.

I don't think many RPG's will achieve the quality of Origins for a while. For me it was an instant classic and a great spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate.

It was like a traditional RPG in nearly everything from the combat to the customization but it felt fresh. I also thought it had a great story and some well written plots and dialogue in many places. The role-playing though is what made it what it was for me.

Unfortunately I don't think Bioware will produce another game like it again. Inquisition was enjoyable but no it was certainly nothing compared to Origins. Inquisition played and felt more like an action-RPG than a traditional RPG (just like the later two Witcher games) but without the role-playing of The Witcher series (you only get one or two choices that actually impact the plot significantly and every other quest is linear).

I enjoyed The Witcher 2 but it wasn't better than Origins for me. The Witcher 3 feels the same for me.

Says the blind fanboy.

The Witcher is not a hardcore RPG, I never once felt any challenge when playing the games, combat is dull and repititive, characters are again dull and boring.  Despite the improvements they have made they story never felt interesting.

If you want a hardcore RPG I would suggest you play The Wizardry series, the Original Bard's Tale, or the new release Elimange Gothic.  thhose make The Wicther games feel quite tame.

I agree about The Witcher series not being an hardcore RPG. In fact apart from the first, the other two are very much action-RPG's with twitch based combat but I disagree with your opinion about the combat being dull along with the characters.

The combat in both the second and third games isn't anything to write home about since it's not unique or innovative (it feels like a combination of Batman with some Dark Souls) but I found it enjoyable and I feel as if the characters are quite well written in both too.

Your comments, at least for me, is exactly what I think of the original Witcher which had dull, easy and repetitive combat with poorly written characters with predictable motives.

Also while the series moved into action-RPG territory, it still continued to give the player a great deal of control of the story as a traditional RPG does. For that, I consider The Witcher 3 a better RPG than Inquisition as well as a better game (also the world and side content is actually worth delving into, with some nice quality sub-plots unlike in Inquisition).

But yep, I'd consider "hardcore RPG's" those old classical titles you mentioned and even as a "hardcore action-RPG" I don't think The Witcher 3 is that. The Dark Souls series and Bloodborne would be that since those are games that are exactly like traditional RPG's but just with action gameplay - they don't hold your hand or tell you where you where to go.

Well, I suppose this thread had to show up sooner or later. Geralt is about as interesting as a blocked toilet is to a plummer.
Disregarding his awful voice acting along with that bimbo love interest Triss Merigold it does carry some solid writing in terms of characters like Iorveth or Roche; it's handlement of political machinations, slightly held down by boring combat and faffing about quests in the first game derived a lot of enjoyment on my end - it all got better in the second one.

I generally enjoy Dragon Age's characters more, which is essentially what carries these games in terms of overall quality. Lore wise it's more friendly than the Witcher which handles its lore about as well as a lion handles a gazelle -- Witcher presumes you read the books to have the necessary amount of investment in characters like say Ciri or other obscure people.

Overall I like both but tend to favor Dragon Age Origins over anything else given how much fun I had with it at the time.

She was a better romance than any romance in any Bioware game, ever.
