Like Mass Effect, it was a game that came exactly at the right time for the market from a developer that has mainstream appeal.
The Drakensang games, obscure TDE/DSA based RPGs from a niche German developer, can easily stand up to Origins in almost every way except production values. Yet one is hailed as GOTYAY, and the other gets so few sales that it's devs go out of business.
Not saying Origins was bad by any means. Still the best Dragon Age game.
But the timeless classic tag it's been given is over the top.
I have one of them, and while I haven't played it much (lots of other games to play) it is quite enjoyable.
As for Origins, I remember when it first came out and people were complaining about how it was a crap game and didn't even come close to being as awesome as Baldur's Gate II. Ah, how times have changed... ![]()
If BioWare manages to release another well received RPG Origins will be forgotten about while everyone else goes on to idolize the newer game when the sequels to that come out. Eventually almost everyone will have forgotten about BG II, but that may be a good thing.
