Like Mass Effect, it was a game that came exactly at the right time for the market from a developer that has mainstream appeal.

The Drakensang games, obscure TDE/DSA based RPGs from a niche German developer, can easily stand up to Origins in almost every way except production values. Yet one is hailed as GOTYAY, and the other gets so few sales that it's devs go out of business.

Not saying Origins was bad by any means. Still the best Dragon Age game. ;)

But the timeless classic tag it's been given is over the top.

I have one of them, and while I haven't played it much (lots of other games to play) it is quite enjoyable.

As for Origins, I remember when it first came out and people were complaining about how it was a crap game and didn't even come close to being as awesome as Baldur's Gate II. Ah, how times have changed...

If BioWare manages to release another well received RPG Origins will be forgotten about while everyone else goes on to idolize the newer game when the sequels to that come out. Eventually almost everyone will have forgotten about BG II, but that may be a good thing.

On Metacritic it seems rather realistic:

DA:O - 91 (PC)

DA 2 - 82 (PC)

DA:I  - 85 (PC)

Before lol@ metacritic. An average out of different ratings will allways hold more merrit than your own personal opinion and that of your uncle.

Bioware writing is going too deep into tumblr. But CDPR writing is not enough into tumblr. I like the right amount of tumblr in my game. I think DAO had just enough.

I don't like bro jokes like when Geralt and Yennefer have an argument, she sends him away, and he automatically says: "seems she's not in the mood". I'd think he'd be concerned about her thoughts if this is a complex grown up relationship. Instead he makes a sex joke. That's how seriosly he takes her. I can see frat bros laughing at that line however. They probably think it's genius writing.

I don't like that when a woman tells some dude off in TW2, he replies with: "that time of the month?"

You didn't see this demeaning stuff in DAO. And before you tell me Roche is meant to be unlikeable so it's justified: They managed to write a compelling villain and generally mean nasty guy in Loghain without resorting to the cheap, easy solution of mocking women.

TW3 is better than Inquisition. And yet the "women, amirite guys?" vibe widespread throughout the game puts me off it. And lines like the ones quoted above happen without player input. They can't be avoided.

Guess I'm stuck with Sunless Sea. That is writing I can rely on.

I want to say because it's part and parcel with the setting, but that won't do. What I do appreciate about CDPR's writing is that they never sugarcoat things, it's there in your face and it won't hold back.

If you wanna interpret Roche's sex jokes as some dudebro stuff, then go ahead. I see it as totally appropriate and in-character.

The Witcher 3 has Johnny and chicken sandwiches. That alone makes it a better game than DA:I for me.

How is slavery okay and part of the "evil guy we're supposed to hate" while a remark about women is too far?

Plus, in Origins I threw gifts at Morrigan on the first night in camp until I got to bang her. I'm pretty sure that's demeaning to everybody involved.

Including the rest of the party, who most likely would have had to hear the whole thing going on.

Sorry but lol metacritic. When score is created by reviews chosen at random it loses all meaning.

Can you source on which case or cases that is based on?

Here is a list of publications that are taken into calculations:

Well it's exactly that that gives the answer. You have sites run by like 1 or 2 people in there. Who counts seems to be completely arbitrary hell there is 3 different IGN's in there. The score is decided by whoever metacritic randomly decides counts as a real reviewer and that's just plain bad.

I am going to burn this thread down to the ground.  Also why did someone bring this Sarkeesian nonsense into this already useless thread?
