I'm at 28/52/40 and I still get murdered sometimes if not watching what I'm doing, outside of playing the AW. As others have pointed out, there's a lot of ways to increase your survivability, but if you're looking to be a walking fortress of bullet spongeyness and mass destruction, it'll be a while.

I played with a dude who had 1900 HP on a Dueliest. I was also on my Duelist, and have around 900 at the same level. So assuming he's using the 200 HP like I am, he'd have to have around 230 Con, give or take some to passives and other factors. He also crit 100% of the time, but again I don't know what gear he was rocking, so he could've had Cun around in the 100's, but I'm guessing 1100+ prestige it's likely higher. He basically tanked everything, never had to use corners or any defensive tactics. Just face tanked for days with Bolt 2 shotting most enemies, and Broadside wiping out everything else.

Sigh, I pine for the day when I too can run through or even frolic within a Dragons fire or electicity. Barely a tad of heatlh being lost. Oh to behold such a wonderous feat of might. Salutations to you mighty Warriors of Dragon Age lore.

The mantra ringing loudly in my ears ; promote promote promote.

Yeah. It never says, "eww, you smell, go take a shower you dirty peasant" or "I'm bored. Can we do something else?"

Be careful it doesn't pull a role reversal on you. I was the big spoon until my prestige hit 400+. Life as the little spoon isn't too bad I guess

When did you start feeling your promotions?

Honestly I'm only really feeling my promotions now, a solid six months after release. The 0.5% extra crit chance that my recently acquired 1 cunning provides is just so useful, the difference is night and day. Every time I crit, I think to myself, "Damn. There's about a 1 - 5 % chance that that crit was a direct result of my impressive cunning promotions (or should I say promotion)."

Obviously the 2% attack increase that my 4 willpower provides is just OP as hell. If I'm really lucky I can one-shot Venatori Zealots. On Routine. With Full Draw. Out of Stealth. If the 2% chance my bow has to cast Shield Bash on hit pays off. Assuming they don't block it.

But the promotions I feel the most are definitely my constitution promotions. All 0 of them. Yes... I feel those.

On a serious note, though, I must echo what others have already said. Promotions serve to make the game easier, whereas environmental awareness, tactical positioning and movement, knowledge of mechanics etc is what actually makes you a 'better' player. Learning the game is your brain responding to the challenge, and is, at least on a basic level, a creative process. Promoting is not. This is one reason I only promote when I want to respec my level 20s (dude those respec items are expensive as hell! Who do they think I am, asking me for 5 cloth? An Antivan bloody prince??)

Having said that, I consider myself a casual player. I usually play on Perilous (Threatening when Perilous matchmaking doesn't work), but I've never done a Perilous solo, so I understand that the game mechanics may limit solo attempts for most classes, thus making promotions necessary in such a circumstance. In my humble opinion, though, if you need to promote to achieve something, that achievement is not testing your knowledge or adeptness at the game, nor your quality of play. Rather it is just testing your patience in your efforts to promote.

But don't let my silly pessimism get in the way, best of luck with your solo! :)

At about 40 there is a difference though for many kits in how effective you are. I mean at that point your archer should become pretty proficient with good gear to melt enemies before they come too close. It's not so much about defense you still can easily die if a group of enemy snipers decide they don't like you and your long shot, and you allow yourself to become their personal pincushion if you draw aggro but your offense should be pretty significant by than too, like one shotting a despair demon through crit longshot significant.

I'm trying to knock out promotes, but my only way will be solo. Even then I'd probably get kicked to the main MP menu still after a match, having to see the exp I had just earned by going into the skills menu or starting another lobby. I almost got a full promotion in one session. I took the advice DrakeHasNoFlow of and skipped routine. I can't go to perilous yet as shield and blockers really jack me up (cunning promoting), I'll try every other promote I suppose.

It will be awhile before you can face tank anything with a rogue, let alone someone who isn't named AW or legionnare because of how slow some stats accrue due to the dmg enemies deal particularly in the higher difficulties. 100+ constitution still doesn't mean your gonna face roll the rtc commander or survive a hail of arrows from archers in perilous as a squishy alchemist/assassin. Isabella is an exception to this because she has elusive which grants and nets her dmg resistance per stack.

Do not be deceived into believing promotions will grant you a total cakewalk into perilous, some classes just aren't designed to tank and are meant more for support. But promotions (unless we are talking 200+ constitution/willpower) will give you more freedom with different builds and you will definitely be an asset as opposed to being dead weight in pugs.

I'm speaking to the majority, when I say most of us do not have such high stats of 200 even 100+, mind you it's advisable to play with common sense and some tact and realize even guys who do have those promotions aren't tanking rtc with a lvl 1 rogue JUST YET.

Gear (hok in particular) is more important in the short run compared to promotions.

This is true yet...

*whistles brushing away RTC's leaping attack onto his L1 assassin*

Rogues have other tricks up their sleeves. They're not direct face tankers, they're off-tankers with interesting CC up their sleeves. There are general boss kiting tactics available to everyone, and there's kit specific tactics too.

The constitution isn't what face rolls the RTC, its the sleep combos, and the cover and use of AoE CC vs archers that counters them. i.e. smart use of tactics and your kits abilities. Isabella is no exception with abilities in mind.

The constitution however, makes it easier to pull off already successful tactics.

I believe some of the basic promotion oriented advantages come in more basic style. Just walking to running minding your business when the Inferno or Storm dragon dive bombs you. The promotions help with bigger pool of HP to be bleeding from and higher resistance to the fire or lightning. To test it you can walk into it with and without wearing a Superb Belt of Fire/Electric Resistance. It is 30% so that is 60 willpower promote. Another 60 Con promote will improve your HP pool by 300HP based on 5 per. Its the main cause of sore neck and looking up all the time....

Fun fact, the magic resistence from willpower and element specific resistence work off each other so that even if you have 80% magic resist from willpower, elemental specific resist (fire/frost/electric/spirit) from tonics armor and passives will further reduce what's there. That means the resist tonics are always useful (as we cannot max out element specific resistence at this time).

Having a large hp pool is always useful too of course.

Also as always the play style also is dependent on how you play it!

smart way - was tanking perilous with level 7 Templar in FC for Inferno before DC with some friends
dumb way - wipe 3 times with lvl 9, 11 and then 13 Avvar on perilous FC for Frost while escort duty and I played bad
got mad way - brought out of retirement lvl 18 Katari to get back at the dragon with same crew and spanked the venatori, second time got DC

lesson of the day I have over 250 promotions total and if you play dumb you get wiped even if you have a lot of promotions. I can tell you this from ....having experience...cough..cough play

play dumb and results are bad, promotions just give me more wiggle room
