Man, I remember this happening back with Baldur's Gate II. (And then Throne of Bhaal.) There were pages after pages of complaints about how it wasn't AD&D and it wasn't third edition, just some horrible compromise. Aerie, Anomen, Jaheria, and... I think Haer'Dalis?... were all somehow the Worst Character Ever And Bioware Should Be Disappointed That They Wrote Them. There was actual *sex* in the game, and that totally didn't belong in an RPG and relationships were only for losers who couldn't get any in real life! And that stupid opening dungeon was the most horrible thing ever and Ir'y wasn't Sarevok! There was too much dialog! The game was too long, but not long enough! Not enough wandering mildlessly through wilderness levels! Etc, etc, etc.
Now most people remember the BG series as one of their favorite games. I bet the same thing will happen to Mass Effect, honestly. KOTOR got the same thing, and KOTOR seems to be massively adored.
Completely agree. Some people want that Bioware stays attached forever at the rolling dice fans, but Bioware will become always heretic because that company is trying to open new possibilities in gaming.
ME2 doesn't is a game based on PC. ME2 isn't a game with stats based combat. ME2 isn't true to RPG conventions. But ME2 isn't also a Gears Of War game with better story. This game is trying to stablish a new type of game. And I feel very lucky to see the awekening of a game that is called to became a new reference for future games.

Unfortunetly, as someone who plays on PC and gets serious motion sickness from FPS games, it would have been handy to know this before shelling out 64 non-refundable dollars to get the CE version. Since Bioware spent a lot time and EA's money telling us this was an RPG.
Wait. Are you saying that you bought Mass Effect 2 without having seen a single screenshot or gameplay video of the game or the original ME1? How could you not know that it has third-person mechanics?

Oh, No, I beat Me 1 (and, masochist that I am, enjoyed the Mako sequences) but I couldn't use the aim button or I'd get nauseous. And yes, I did, however, most of them rather glossed over the part where aim wasn't just an option anymore.
Ah, that makes sense. Since the post you were responding to made no reference to aiming, your post sounded to me like you were unaware that ME is a third-person game.

Personally I hate the fact that any one says I did not enjoy the game or was disappointed by X,Y or Z gets torn to pieces by blatant ranting fan boys. That kind of ruins this forum. It is OK to dislike stuff you know.
I have not played the game but am worried by a lot of the stuff I have seen to date especially ref trying to be Halo rather than what BW do best RPG's. I for one will reserve judgement till I get the game, but wish fan boys would stop trying to silence anything they do not want to listen to.
I actually do not have a problem with people disagreeing with me and feel any one over the age of 5 should have gotten over that kind of childish behaviour. I get the feeling a lot of folk on both sides sit with their fingers in their ears going lalalalalala I can't here you. I want to here both sides so I can get the full picture so grow up all of you (you know who I mean).
This is pretty much exactly how I feel about the whole thing. It helps keep things in perspective and stops me from overhyping the game to myself, otherwise I'll either end up disappointed that it doesn't meet up to my expectations or I'll try and delude myself that it does meet them and then get upset when someone points them out to me/finally come back to my senses.
To be honest one of the reasons I never buy on release day is that all the ranting stops a clear picture appearing of what is actually good or bad about the game. It always takes me a while to see the pros and cons through the bull.
I liked (not loved,) ME1 but felt BW were going a bit RPG lite if you get me, but this new one seems more a shooter. I enjoy Halo as a shooter, my problem is I like a old fashioned RPG games from Bioware they are not Bungie. Like wise I would not like Bungie doing a RPG. Just like I would hate to see Lionhead do FF13 or Rockstar a racing game. Horses for courses folks.
The guys at BW are just wrong, despite what EA wants, to go down this route. As a fan of FPS and RPG I for one do not want it all mashed up into one mess.
I second that. It's exactly the way I feel.

Gears of war 3rd person shooter Check!
Mass effect 2 3rd person shooter Check!
Gears of war character progression through stat upgrades None!
Gears of war diaologue system None!
Gears of war create a character None!
Gears of war power wheel None!
Gears of War spaceship upgrades None!
Gears of war planet exploration None!
Gears of War armor customization None!
Gears of War weapon upgrades None!
Gears of war special abilties (biotics, adrenaline rush) None!
I can go on and on about how wrong these comparisons are. Is ME2 more shooter oriented than the first? Yes but to go and say its gears of war with a story is wrong.

I do have one problem with the Cerberus network: It's an attempt to manipulate the secondary market, and therefor a violation of the law. Not that anyone cares in this day and age where corporations have more rights then men, but...

When a room is cluttered and messy, the flaws all sort of blend together. As you clean up the flaws and your room becomes cleaner, the remaining flaws become far more more apparent.
Mass Effect 2 is a near-perfect game in my opinion. The characters are richer, the combat is tighter, the upgrading is deeper, the story more engaging, even the music is superior IMO. So far, the only inherent flaw I see are the mundane, time-consuming resource harvesting and the silly helmet toggle issue. Everything else is gravy and I'm overjoyed that such a deep RPG has mingled so well with exciting shooter designs.

The change in controls really surprised me. I guess it's for the better. Probably not a big deal if you haven't played ME1 in a while, but I was playing a second round just before ME2 came out. Now I'm trying to break old habits.
[Side note] Does Shepard walk with a limp? I hope that's intentional. :innocent:
I love the Normandy SR-2. This is a ship! There are things I can snipe at, but I'm not going to go into them. I'm sure negative commenters can find plenty things to praise in this game. Sometimes the negative things tends to make you forget about the awesome things. You just have to not let it get in the way of enjoying what does work well.
I must not have Shepard outfitted with a helmet. He doesn't wear it while in coversation. It looks weird in battle, but maybe that's a work around for those who want to see the emotional responses on their character's faces.
I think I'll be more opinionated after I've played through the game. It may be that the things that I don't like are negligible in comparison to the game overall.
