Do you prefer to play as an elf? Let's chat about Thedas from our perspective. This isn't a debate about whether elves are good or bad, Solas vs. Sera, city vs. Dalish. There are plenty of other threads for that. This is about you, your elf character, and what you think about your story and the people, places and events in Thedas.

Some topics for discussion:

  • What's your backstory? Tell us briefly what your origin story would be for your main character. It doesn't have to fit in with the existing games (you don't have to be the Warden or the Inquisitor).
  • Why do you identify with elves?
  • What do you think of the game models? Would you change the appearance of the elves?
  • What do you think will happen, and what would you like to see happen (not necessarily the same thing!) with elves in the next game?
  • What do you think of the Sentinel elves? Did their discovery change your character's perspective?
  • Separation or Integration? Or something else? Should elves marry humans? Can you be an elf culturally but not physically?
  • Whom do you worship: Andraste, Dalish Gods, Old Gods, No Gods or Qun?

Finally a elf thread that's awesome.

I enjoy playing elves mostly due to the idea of a underdog someone who's a outsider wanted by no-one that changes the world for the better

Thanks for replying, raging_monkey! I found myself always playing elves and started thinking about my choice. I admire the other races, but I feel more invested in my character when I'm playing an elf.

Yeah I like the look of this thread. I don't have time for a long post now, and Monkey will have heard it all before in the Sera thread anyway, but I'll be back to tell you all about Tressa...

Great Thread idea! :)

Im a fan of most of the races in Dragon Age but as this is an elf thread i will indulge in my Elf characters.

So, about my elven Inquisitor.

Initially, my elf was a mage as id always wanted to play as a keeper/first in dragon age game. Some great unique dialogue with Solas. Unfortunately, due to a bad glitch i had to delete my character.
Made a human male mage, a loyalist pro-circle and it was a very very rewarding character.

I've recently decided to remake a female elven warrior.
Why not a male? Simple. I find the body to be alittle off- big head and a very skinny body frame. That and i can make a better looking female elf compared to a male elf.

Why not a mage? Well id already played through as both a mage.elf and a human mage, and had been reading alot on the Emerald Knights. Due to a particular bow in DLC, we also find there were a faction of Emerald Knights who protected the Dales from demons and Maleficarum.

I play Heroes of Dragon Age, and came across an elven unit called the Dalish Solis Warrior. The elf is equipped with a sword and shield and two swords on the back. Looks awesome. Then i saw the Arlathan General who wields another sword and shield and i thought he looks awesome.

So my elf is a Sword and Shield warrior who will likely become a Champion of the Inquisition. Her name will be Melora.

Im very happy with this character. I feel there is a vast majority of elven characters within dragon age who are mages, and there is only a handful of nonmage elves who are given special importance. So my inquisitor will join the ranks of elves such as Zevran, Ariane, Briala and Sera, and show everyone just how awesome an elf can be ;)

Love your story, monkey! I always wish I could meet the player characters in a story mod or write a collaborative story together. Though our backstories are similar, our characters are quite different.

@themageguy: I'd love to see a picture of your Melora. It was interesting for me to see an elf in DAI wielding a huge hammer. I was thinking about creating a Loyalist character like your first mage, but I can't bring myself to do it. I've been trying to come up with a character for my next playthrough who will take the Templar path.

@YourFunnyUncle - I hope you'll post your story, as I haven't dived into the Sera thread yet (I'm almost finished with my first playthrough and have been tiptoeing around trying to stop myself from looking at spoilers).

The Sera thread is long and (until the last 150 pages or so) full of off-topic. I wouldn't advise reading through it all unless you have a lot of time to kill, although we had fun at the time! I will post when I have time to do Tressa and my thoughts on elves justice. :)

Yay for non-mage elves!

So here's the thing; I was never all that invested in the elven lore and stories until DA:I.  I liked them, but I was always more interested in the mage/templar conflict.  Then all the information about LIs came out, and it turned out that Solas was restricted to female elves for "story reasons."

That piqued my curiosity since BioWare's never done that before, so I rolled my canon quizzy: Clariel Lavellan, archer rogue.  Between Solas's dialogue and DA:I being steeped in fascinating elven lore, I quickly got drawn into all the elven stuff.  And oh boy.  An emotional rollercoaster, but it was totally worth it.  Going forward, I'd love to hear more about the ancient elves, and we probably will with Solas's plot hook.

Going forward, I'd also like to see the game series do more with the modern elves beyond their political and social oppression.  I feel like those stories have been told already.  Show us an Arlathvhen so we see the real variety and diversity of the Dalish.  Take us to qunari lands, so we can see how elves live there.  Give us an alienage wedding that doesn't go horribly wrong :P That sort of thing.

I agree! I feel like we're on the brink of toppling the status quo and that elves are going to achieve some kind of equality, though what we'll do with it is a good question. I was intrigued by the elven Qun follower (Gatt) and that the Qun has so much appeal for elves, and I'd like to explore that story.

For me, the loyalist mage was a great character. He allied with the Templars, romanced Cassandra, and put Vivienne on the Sunburst Throne.
It all fit really well. Especially the reason as to why you were the enclave - the ostwick circle remained fairly neutral during the conflict, and it was hoped that your noble heritage would give your voice some more sway in the meeting. I also chose Knight Enchanter given that they serve the Divine and Chantry traditionally (though the discipline does have roots in elven arcane warrior techniques).

As for Melora, she will most likely wield Evanura and the shield from the Black Emporium. Maybe i might spec her into 2h and wield the Sulevin blade or a crafted version of it.

She was an artificer.  I like the specialization from a story perspective; she had June's vallaslin, so it was like she literally lived or died based on what she crafted.  But mechanically I found it to be a bit eh, so maybe I'll pick up a different specialization when I replay.

I can definitely see why the Qun has such appeal to elves.  There's still a rigid hierarchy of power, but no one starves or dies or gets mistreated just because of the shape of their ears.  Probably why the qunari found so many elven converts in Kirkwall despite the whole situation there being FUBAR.  I'm curious to see if that will still be the case in a worldstate where the elves achieve more political power (Gaspard + Briala, Celene +Briala).

And that was still in the south. In Tevinter it's slavery, poverty that makes slavery seem appealing, or the Qun. I totally get elves, or anyone no matter the shape of the ears, choosing the Qun over the other two choices. I certainly would.

Well, anyone except mages  But you're right about Tevinter.  Based on Calpernia and Krem's backstories, it's pretty clear that life sucks in Tevinter for the poor and/or enslaved regardless of the shape of your ears.

Back on topic with a screenshot of my Lavellan.

(snip).

That's an excellent combination of Junes vallaslin and being an artificer.

I've rolled a tempest archer and found its fun, and seemed to suit an Fade Hunter, but i actually found Artificer to be a little more fun. This may explain why i enjoyed the N7 Demolisher, Talon Merc and Drell assassin in ME3MP :)

Oh man, you're making me nostalgic for the N7 Demolisher.  Grenade detonation: more boom with your boom!  I just found the traps in DA:I to be a bit underwhelming, though I did really like Fallback Plan.  Or maybe I just didn't play around with them enough.

Pretty like really pretty

Thanks!  Took me a few tries in the CC.  Lavellan was so much harder to make than Adaar.

Would you all play an elf who follows the Qun? I find the idea intriguing, but I don't think I could personally be a Qun-follower.

Hmm. It'd be an interesting RP experience, that's for sure.  I think I'd definitely try it.  I could see myself playing an elf like Tallis or Gatt, who was born outside the Qun and converts to it later.  I'd have a harder time playing a character who was born into the Qun; it's the conflict and doubt of characters like Tallis or Iron Bull that I find interesting.

Yes if the opportunity allowed it the qun gets a bad Rep for something that happened centuries ago And I believe in choice And if one wished to join them I support them in their endeavour

One of my two canon Wardens is a male elf mage.  Rywick is sarcastic and brilliant with a tendency to hide his feelings behind his wit. There are two people who mean something to him: Alistair, his best friend and Angharad, a human female whom he loves but who loves Nathaniel Howe. Taken to the Circle of Ferelden at a young age, Rywick, among his other magical gifts was a seer. He'd seen Angharad in his future many times until one day, she no longer appeared. Knowing that (unlike Einstein's theory of time) the future is mutable, he knew that something had changed and he did not meet her until after he was the Hero of Ferelden, but by then he had already fathered a child with Morrigan, and though he still loved Angharad, he went through the mirror to help raise his son. What became of him after that is unknown (except for a brief moment when he reappeared to save Angharad's life).

In Inquisition, Ilena, my canon elf is female and romances Solas. Aside from being proud of her heritage and of being a mage, she is intensely curious about everything and everyone. Unlike many Dalish, she is not fearful of strangers or other races, she is curious to learn. She finds Solas fascinating because he is unlike other Dalish she has met or like any of the city elves she has known. Her curiosity for his unusual specialty (can we call it fade-walking or I guess he's a dreamer) leads to her growing admiration for him and her growing curiosity about him. She can sense that somehow he is different, she just doesn't know exactly how. Until the Mark, she was a true candidate for Keeper because she always tries for the win-win solution to a problem, works to keep the peace among associates, but also defends when it is needed.
