Playing an Elf Mage Inquisitor currently. Any recommendations for a specialization? 

I've played both as a Rift Mage and a Knight Enchanter with my Elf mage quizzy. Both have their pros and cons, and both are fun. Personally I think both fit the Inquisitor more than the necromancer does, because you know... Rift Mage, rifts, anchor... and Knight Enchanter really feels like it fits a leader. For an ELF Inquisitor though, my favorite is Knight Enchanter, because it's technically an ancient elven kind of thing. Plus I like fighting on the front line along with Bull.

I played Rift Mage and found it very satisfying, especially in the Frostback Basin. Others swear by Knight-Enchanter, but I have absolutely no desire to be a tank. I would have chosen Necromancer (I'm always drawn to the dark side), but Rift mage seemed to fit well with the Inquisitor's special talent, and Necro has some issues/is more difficult to play effectively, from what I've read.
 
It's such a shame that we didn't get any Dalish magic for our elves. One would think a Keeper's First would know a few nature spells.

Well, it's not like a Knight Enchanter has to go melee all the time. You still can use your long range elemental spells.

Something to think about:

Gods tend to be killable in most polytheistic religions. Being killable =//= 'mere mortal'.

'Mage' is a post-veil term. Someone who can interact and draw power from the fade. Ancient elves existed in a time when there was no real distinction between the fade and material and there was no 'magic' as it would have been just another natural force flowing freely between the two. Interaction with the fade would have been an everyday affair. With this in mind the distinguishing factor between the ancient elves would have been the extent of their control of that force. So not so much 'mage' elves and 'mundane' elves but 'noble' and 'commoner' elves with the gods being completely in a league of their own.

We, as theodosian inquisitors, would however need to squeeze all this in to concepts we understand. Baldy does exactly that for us, flavored with his own personal take on it along with the "texts" that translate in to terms that we would be familiar with.

 

Edit: To clarify what i mean with the distinction between ancient elves, think of 'magic' of the ancient elves like science and engineering of our own world. They use the natural forces and laws of the world and most everyone can grasp the concepts to varying degrees and even apply them within their means but very few are capable of designing and building a nuclear reactor or do genetic engineering.

I've always been an elf fan, no matter what fantasy game I play. Since I am human myself I find it enjoyable playing a different race (even if that race is essentially lithe humans with pointy ears  )

 

My Inquisitor (Britta) is an extremely curious person and is always questioning things and studying books/history. I was torn between playing as a mage or a rogue because I really wanted to play as a Keeper's First for once, but I also really enjoy being a rogue archer. I ended up choosing mage because I love Varric, Sera, and Cole so I wanted to use them in my party. When I play a rogue my rogue party members never get used. 

 

I like to headcanon that the Red Hart belonged to Britta and her clan sent him to her. His name is Juno (named in honour of June) and she raised him since his mother was killed by human hunters. As an animal lover I feel my characters always need an animal companion (the warden and Hawke had their Mabaris obviously).

 

I have more info on her but I am really scatterbrained and sometimes have trouble collecting my thoughts so I will leave it at that.

I went smaller mostly for practicality in the CC.  The smaller and flatter the ears are, the less likely they are to clip with all the hair mods I have installed

 

For longer/bigger hair, though, the ears clip no matter what, so making them bigger makes the tips peek through the hair.

Revas is the First of Clan Lavellan; his mother is Keeper Deshanna Istimaethoriel. He's descended from one of the nobility who governed the Dales, before the Orlesian occupation of the independent kingdom. He met Merrill at the last Arlathvhen, when they were much younger.

When Tevinter was moving elven slaves from Denerim to the Imperium, Clan Lavellan rescued them. They helped some get to nearby Andrastian settlements, while others remained with the Dalish.

Revas believes that his people deserve autonomy, and the freedom to worship their own gods and practice magic. He doesn't frown on an elf loving a shemlen, but he personally wouldn't pursue a relationship with someone who didn't want some of the same things as him; he wants a future with the People.

The revelations from Solas lead Revas from being religious to becoming agnostic. He doesn't believe in the Maker. He disbands the Inquisition; he plans to take the clans at Skyhold with him to Kirkwall, where he'll gift his new lands to them so they have a home; he will also use his position as Comte to help Lavellan governed Wycome. He can reunite with his old friend Merrill, now leader of the elves who had no one but her helping them during the war.

Personally, I like the Dalish; they're flawed, resident, and interesting. The Dalish also have some similar traits to the Taino and other Native American groups, which I think is pretty neat.

So after Trespasser , beware spoiler here's the story of my Lath Lavellan.

So Lath Lavellan didn't have the best start in life .His name is "Love" , he is a bastard  and his Dalish mother young and naive when she got him just ran away to become a city elf when he was still a young kid.

He became very angry bullying others and being a pain in the a** in general until he discovered he was really good at archery and scouting , and he loved it.

He also became BFF with a boy who shared his passion , they became joined at the hips for years .

 

He spend 10 very happy carefree years, following Andruil's teachings .

Being a hunter and a nomad was running in his blood , and seeing his people longing for a land , magic and lost immortality left him sad and puzzled.

Immortal sounded boring , he wasn't scared of magic but he couldn't care less about it , for him it was the business of Keepers and her apprentice .And having a land ment turning into shems and reminding him of his mother ditching him for the city.

 

Anyway things went well until puberty hit him a bit late , and he figured out he was in love with his best friends.But that wasn't ment to happen .His best friend was already courting a young elve.

Lath did his Lath and thought he could love his friend in silence and things will go on as they were and everything would be alright.

It didn't last.

The main thing he did in silence was growing jealous and bitter until one day he lash out at his friend fiancee and assaulted her.He didn't kill her but wanted it bad enough it scared him.

His friend kicked his ass as a result and never spoke to him again.

He wasn't thrown out of the clan , but things grew cold.

 

Older hunters took him under their wings and brought him on long scouting and hunting trip away from the clan and trouble.

He was reaching adulthood and ready to have his valasslin.He always thought he would take Andruil as his main Goddess...but changed his mind.

He didn't like the anger in him , he was ashamed of hurting one of his clan and ruining what he loved because of it and so he turned to Mythal for guidance.Just like she calmed Elgar'nan in the story , he hoped Mythal would bring him peace and clarity.

 

A couple of years passed , Clan Lavellan started to get threatened by the mages and templars war.

The Keeper wanted to send spies at the Conclave , Lath was one of the hunters protesting they should move further in the forest and not get involved in shemlen affairs.

Nevertheless , the Keeper chose him.

 

Then well things went BOOM.

 

Lath freed the mages in Redcliffe mostly because Fiona was an elf .He hated her with a burning passion (selling her own to slavery) but couldn't made her prisonner in the name of a human organisation.

Still he was pro putting human mages in circles where they would be far far away from Dalish clans.

He really loved and trusted Cassandra so he push her for the Divine role .

He didn't agree with Leliana about letting elves in the Chantry , elves should follow their Gods , the Creators , not a God who cares only about humans.

 

Things got complicated though , he started dating Dorian , a Tevinter mage.First they didn't get along so well but things changed after Skyhold.

Lath spend months thinking about it , he couldn't imagine how his clan would react.

He's against relationship between human and elves on principle since they produce human ...of course it's not a problem with Dorian and him but his own hypocrisy is not lost on him.

Still being a closet romantic he was fully comitted to the relationship whatever people would think about it.

 

Then the temple of Mythal...meeting the sentinels was like being pushed in the face ..."You are not my People".Lath was hurt , it wasn't really about him , he knew he wouldn't fit any ancient elf bill...it was like all the Dalish people being betrayed by their past.

Then it got worst , the Well of Sorrows ...that's where Lath felt like he betrayed himself and his duty to his People.He should have drank from it , but he was too scared of whatever unknown magic was at work.

 

Mythal was also something.Mythal was a motherly figure , something ment to appease and guide him on a path to righteousness.

And there she is , standing before him...human shouting about revenge , and her own daughter hates her.

Lath decided to ...not think about it!

It's just one of those thing he couldn't compute without banging in head into a wall.

So his stance was Mythal was having a bad day , but she answered his prayers and helped him defeat Corypheus .And that's all that matters.

 

So Lath Lavellan killed Corypheus , being an overall nice guy trying to do good...He stayed around to help Cassandra rebuild the Chantry.

Send letters to his clans in Wycome , urging the Keepers to keep their nomadic ways and only use Wycome as a relay.He told the truth about Dorian...but not the fact he gave the last of elven knowledge to a human witch.He informed them Mythal was asheballanar and answered his prayers , but not the part about "too late to help the elves " and "Argh revenge argh!"...he also remained vague about the grumpy sentinels.

He asked her to call for an exceptional meeting of clans , where he will tell the truth and expect to be stoned to death.Picturing himself a martyr sometimes ease his guilt.

 

Trespasser and its event was also well another turning point for Lath.

He lost his hand , being an archer was such a part of himself , it's terrible.He losts his Gods , ...and the worst : Sera was right.

Sera was always his imbecile little sister , he loved her but he thought she was the stupiest elf he ever met.(he wouldn't call himself intelligent but she just beats him)

The past isn't so important , what is important is taking a stand and saving people when it matters.Elf , mage human dwarf, Tevinter , Qunari whatever....they didn't deserved to be sacrificed on the altar of old elves broken dreams.

So Lath ends up disbanding the Inquisition and joining the Red Jennies to clear his head for a while.

He goes back to Wycome and tell the whole truth , not from a martyr point of view but from a we have to save ourselves from our past.

Still deep down he wants to believe Solas is a misguided God , one who cares for the Elven people and he wants to prove him wrong.

He still prays to Mythal and believe she will come through again and answers his prayers.

The others elven Gods just don't exist anymore for him , he's good at lying to himself and being a hypocrite sometimes but not when it involves worshipping butchers and slavers.

 

So he goes and cause mayhem , in Orlais , Ferelden , the Free Marches , Tevinter...he does everything to stir elves from Solas and the Qun .Making some of them friends of Red Jennies , equal with humans and dwarves.

He also helps Dorian in the shadows reforming Tevinter.Mostly shanking dangerous magisters and freeing their slaves if possible.

He's very protective of Dorian , having spies watch him to inform him of any danger .

Dorian is also a godsend , screaming after him when he goes too far , and keeping him from giving up thinking Solas might be right and there's no point in fighting.

 

 

Although it might take him  a few decade to fully process Sera was right all along.Crazy world.

Mihris (Rift mage):

Mihris was often called boring by other members of her clan because she did everything by the book. She was never very popular with the boys either, as they said her appearance was almost as bland as her personality. Even her name is common among Dalish clans. She hoped one day she would find her place in the world, maybe another clan that might appreciate her appreciation for rules, order and cooperation. Little did she know her assignment as the First of the Clan Lavellan would thrust her into a new role and mission in life--during which she became attracted to a hairy, bearded human in the forest--what she saw was the embodiment of justice, bravery, and honor, a true knight, just like in the human legends she had heard about. She never thought that bringing order to the world would be so exciting and that she would find a brave knight to fight by her side along the way.

Each of my elves have been fierce tattooed elfy elves, firm believers of elven gods and spitting in the face of the Chantry. In DAI most of the ended up being necromancers too for some reason, didn´t get the reaction I was looking for though. I think there was still much left to be desired as a elf pc. A bit disappointed about the options. Thought it could have been worse.

I enjoyed the way people would mention the death of your family in DAO if you played as a Cousland.

Thanks! I RP her as an idealistic bookworm. Despite conducting hours of research into Orlesian culture, history and (her least favorite) fashion, Mihris obviously did not fit in during the ball at Halamshiral. She attempted to discuss the relationship between the finer points of cheesemongering across Thedas and smallholder dairy farmer systems with a member of the Council of Heralds and his entourage.

 

Her court approval was so low, she was almost ejected from the occasion.

My Lavellan made a comment about missing the people he knew before the events of Inquisition, Cullen responded along the lines of "Ah, the loss of Clan Lavellan. I'm sorry you have to carry that with you still, I can only hope the pain fades but I know that isn't likely". Exact wording may be different, but that's the general idea.

My canon Elf inquisitor.

 

Ellana Lavellan (had meant to be Tara or Seren but I pressed the accept button and didn't want to go back and start again)

 

 

I was going for the Daenerys from GoT look.

 

But Ellana is a Warrior (Champion specialisation - got to love a proper tank!), who romanced Josephine.

 

Not really played an Elf before in DA but I think the Elves had the best race storyline (the takeover of Wycombe) and worked best with Solas twist too.

 

My second canon inquisitor (its taken me a few goes to get them) will be a human rogue.

I used to be a total elf fan in every rpg, but DAO made me a dwarf enthusiast. Very sad how elves fare in the DAverse, but that's another discussion. Nevertheless my only character so far (with 100s of hrs) is an elf, so...

She's based on Aedlyn Tabris, my city elf from DAO, though I used my Dalish DAO character as my Keep basis for continuity. I wanted to follow up on Aedlyn as a rogue, but, well, no alienage elf characters in DAI, so I made her a Dalish archer...

 

I head-canon her as having been curious about life outside the clan, having met humans and city elves during hunting or scouting, and having liked what she found, even making a human friend or two, perhaps having been treated to dinner in some curious human farmhouse. (It may have just been luck that she found such humans since could just as easily have been attacked, but I was looking for a different formative experience for her...) She became a bit of an outsider in the clan, mocked for not hating the "shems," and later became fascinated with the Chantry, particularly as Andraste was never the one to launch Exalted Marches against the elves. When the Conclave meeting was taking place, the Keeper naturally decided Aedlea was the best choice to send since she would "fit in" better than anyone else in the clan. And when Aedlea became the Herald, she immediately warmed to the notion, seeming to explain why she was different and giving her the whole "special purpose" thing. Clearly Andraste wanted her to show everyone that the Dalish were favored by the Maker as well, and that the history of rivalry between humans and elves was a big misunderstanding. (I love the NPC interaction you overhear in Haven where one person (elven?) is asking a Chantry sister about whether elves were mentioned in the Chant of Light. "That's just nonsense!" Aedlea: "Hmm, maybe it's true...")

 

Solas' repugnance for the Dalish (it seems both elven companions resent the Dalish for something *sigh* (predictably enough)) intrigued Aedlea, given that she had encountered it herself to some degree without ever resenting her own. She always thought that the kindness and friendliness that had won her positive encounters outside her clan were the best way to handle things (I choose all the "emotional" and "nice" reactions in her dialogs), so she found it challenging to overcome Solas' repugnance as she became enthralled with his tales of the Fade and impressed with his general sense of comprehension of the world she'd only now begun to explore. When he took her to the side to tell her about Cory's Dalish orb during the flight from Haven, she felt they'd shared something meaningful together. Eventually she was torn romantically between him and Blackwall who (at least initially) seemed like a human who struggles to understand his worth and devotes himself to "doing good" in the world regardless. But Solas is elven like her, so she's keen on him, truly wanting to be accepted for who she is by her people, even if Solas isn't exactly calling himself Dalish. (Naivete is a viable character trait haha)

 

I haven't gotten far enough in story missions to develop her own story further, but it at least feels fairly roleplayed, and I like the character...

It stands to reason that one chooses the vallaslin he wants based on which elven god he admires the most.

An elf wearing Elgar'nan's mark doesn't have to be a bad person but is certainly unlikely to be merciful, something my Warden was all too often.

If i were to play a warrior, id probably choose Mythals.
If a rogue, Andruils for sure.
