I have had 3 elven characters so far that I keep replaying with, exploring the other options I could have taken with them. I've tried playing as human but I just can't get into it.
My first Inquisitor was a female mage. Her back story was that she originally came from the alienage but when her powers showed her parents preferred to lose her to the Dalish than the human run Circles. Naturally the clan was only too glad to take her because the Lavellan clan cherishes mage children and thinks they are closer to what the elves used to be. So the Keeper chose to send her to the enclave, not because she had more than 3 mages in her clan, but because Atisha (peacemaker) had more experience of humans (even if only as a young child) than the rest of the clan. She had been given the name Atisha because she would always try and resolve a dispute peacefully and could calm the tempers of even the most volatile members of the clan. Another reason for using her as the spy. Naturally she ended up with Solas and was totally enraptured with him, looking to him for guidance of practically everything. Naturally she became a Rift Mage. Solas' desertion hit her very hard, following on as it did on the revelations about the elven gods and meeting Mythal. Initially I had her not drinking from the Well because of Solas' reluctance but then I changed my mind (once I knew he would leave her anyway) and had her drink from the Well because that is what she had been trained to do.
My second Inquisitor was an elven hunter, Enavir (Pathfinder). He was gay and volunteered for the role of spy as he had no wife or children who would miss him, unlike the majority of his fellow hunters. He took his role of spy very seriously and made a careful study of everything that went on in the human world. He ultimately took the assassin specialisation because being stealthy and deadly and recognising the threat in others seemed like a good idea. He was an awesome archer. Initially he mistrusted Dorian, as he did anything to do with Tevinter and opted for asking help from the Templars as the lesser of two evils, since he wasn't about to walk into an obvious trap in Redcliffe Castle without at least some magic negating backup. As he got to know Dorian better, he began to admire him and one thing led to another. He never believed that the glowing hand had anything to do with the Maker or Andraste. When Cory said he had stolen it but Solas told him it was elven, he felt may be it was a sign the elven gods were returning. Then when they discovered the truth in the Fade he still felt that the orb had been attracted to him because it was rightfully his (as an elf) but nevertheless was not bothered at the lack of divine intervention. He had the vallaslin of Mythal and so might well have drunk from the Well but for the obvious reluctance of both Solas and Dorian to do so, Cole's advice against having the voices in his head and, crucially, Dorian saying he did not want to lose him to the Well. After meeting with Mythal he was profoundly grateful to Dorian that he saved him from the fate of serving her for eternity. He is now committed to building a future for his people that does not involve looking at the past with rose tinted spectacles and looking after the interests of both Dalish and city elves.
My third Inquisitor, Sulevin, was a male mage but already something of a rebel and thus the Keeper thought it would alleviate tensions in the clan if she gave him a different task to perform that was more suited to his enquiring and questioning mind. Unlike my other two he decided to fully embrace the whole Herald of Andraste role, not because he necessarily believed in the Maker any more than he did the elven gods, but because it seemed expedient to do so. However, because he was basically an agnostic none of the revelations phased him. He became a Knight Enchanter because it suited his nature to be at the forefront in battle but was doubly pleased when both Solas and Vivienne informed him of its relevance. He greatly admired Cassandra and eventually they became lovers. Together they are an almost unstoppable team and amazing dragon slayers.
I am very hopeful that the choices we are allowed to make in DAI and the epilogue with Solas, mean that not only will there be more elven interest in the future but that ultimately their situation will improve in the overall scheme of things. My male hunter is currently my canon version.
