This has occurred for a LOT of folks. Looks like something in the installer is broken. For most of the folks, uninstall and then reinstall and it works. (This is for the black screen at launch and then immediate crash error).

Tech advice: do a barrel roll!

It's as good advice as anyone else HONESTLY has around here. We gotta wait for a hotfix, bro.

I had the problem you described. Then tried on all 3 of my QA machines and manifested the same problem (same config). On all 3 the uninstall / reinstall worked and fixed the problem. Just saying it's worth a try instead of waiting. It may not work, but it did for me.

Windows 7?
Were you using Steam?
Does DLC seem to affect the build with this problem?

Same thing happens to me.

Vista64

Q6600 Quad

Latest drivers and updates on everything

Steam Digital Deluxe version.

I go to play and I get a windows error telling me that the game is not responding and will be closed. Dragon Age is currently doing the same thing although it worked fine in the past. All other games work fine.

UPDATE 2 - Possible Fix (NOT):

I went into Documents > Bioware > Deleted Mass Effect 2 folder

Launched game > Press Any Key > Login to EA/Cerebus > Main Menu!

I will try and repro the issue again, and see if I can salvage the save file. Had to delete my first one. Which is lame, but hey im in the main menu now!

UPDATE 3 - Ceberus Network to blame!:

Ok, I think the problem is cerebrus network. Login to nucleus/Cerebrus is tied to the save file. If you launch game with no save file, it prompts you to login to nucleus and creates a player profile based on their email. However, once it looks for cerebrus connection, something goes wrong, and the title crashes to desktop.

Therefore, a user having this particular problem may be able to play once, but any time it tries to connect to the cerebrus server the game will crash. So far I crash when launching game with a save file, and once when I died in-game (pressed Resume, crashed).

BIOWARE: Please investigate further. There's not much I can do but play the intro until I die. Unless this bug is a feature: Contra Difficulty. In the meantime Ill be surfing the Cerebrus problem threads and see if it fixes/changes the issue.

The Omnitron. While yes that has been an issue for some this forum is specifically for people that when they click play from the launcher the see a black screen and then it announces windows must close for no reason.

OK I am having the Same problem.....

ME2 Collectors Edition disk version, not a direct download.

I get the luanch menu and then I select play and the screen goes black and then crashes, with a erro box that closes the application.

My PC is an HP XW8400 workstation running Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate, with 2 XEON dual core processors (yes 4 cores total) running at 3.0 Ghz.... with 12 GB of memory my video card is an Nvidia 275, I just updated to the latest nvidia drivers version 196.21

I have uninstalled and reinstalled with the same issue.

The installation seemed to go OK, however the stange part is this. I have two DVD-rom drives, and when it askes for the second disk it wants it in the opsite drive then what I started the install in with the first disk.

I have tried to delete the mass effect 2 directory in my documents folder and that did not help. I have set all the video settings to off, and tried to start the game and still get the same results.

I did try and run the game in a window, and the interesting thing is that nothing comes up, not even the crash message.

I looked at the even viewer for applications and this is what it is reporting:

Faulting application name: MassEffect2.exe, version: 1.0.1593.2, time stamp: 0x4b2845cd

Faulting module name: MassEffect2.exe, version: 1.0.1593.2, time stamp: 0x4b2845cd
