Does it give you any error messages? Like a window pops up or anything? If so what message does it give you, or can you look in you even log and see if it is giving you the same message as the one I posted earlier....

All I get is an empty white window with 'Mass Effect 2 (Not Responding)' in the title bar.

Do you have to open task manager to close it or does it go away on it own?

hmmm...that is a little different then mine....mine just goes away.....have you tried to extract the files manually as mentioned in some of the other posts? Also, do you have any extra Codex loaded for videos? I have seen some post where strange codexs have caused the problem

I can not test much right now as I am not in front of my PC, but later tonight I will try and get mine working and maybe have some more insight to your issues.

Im having a problem very much similar to you guys, except, I was playing the game, enjoying the plot and stuff but I was in a mission and just had an energy surge here in my house, my computer restarted.

Normal till then because I have had lots of that problem lately but it never affected the game...

Somehow after this time the game simply says "no, i don't wanna work anymore"...

I launch the game, press PLAY... get a black screen, then Puff, back to desktop with the solution screen...

Im using Windows 7 X86

160GB HDD Sata 2

Nvidia Geforce 8600 GT 512 V 195.62

4GB ram

Intel® Pentium® D CPU 3.40GHz

DirectX 10.0 (Mar2009) or later

I tried already downloading a new msvcr80.dll from internet and switching via prompt to this folder and.. same problem, so I switched back the original 617kb (internet was 612) and I'm simply amused about HOW THE HECK A SIMPLE SURGE COULD DO IT?

I had the same problem, game installed fine and then crashed immediately after trying to start.

It now works after uninstalling and reinstalling once. To be sure, and after reading this thread I took the following steps;

1. Update to the lastest ATI drivers

2. Did some windows updates, one being a compatability issue update

3. Installed directx from the disc, which bizarrly installed something even though I knew it was uptodate, maybe a Direct x 10 patch??

4. Put a disc into each of my DVD drives

5. Turned pretty much every program running off whilst it installed.

I am using Windows 7 64bit ultimate, directx10, radeon 4870x2, core2duoE8400, 6gb ram

the only other suggestion i have for people who are stuck is to try a no cd hack, as the problem seems to be at the loader stage.

disregard my earlier post. after reinstalling I was able to launch the game a few times but then it crashed my PC. Since the crash I'm having the exact same issue, game won't launch. :|

Is there anyone from BIOWARE or EA that is watching this????? I would think this would grab someones attention at the company and they would be able to post a message on what they think the problem is and the stupid need to have the 2 disks in both drives.....if you have 2 optical drives......

Nice idea, Im gonna try updating my Geforce Drivers from 195 to 196 and see if it happens to work, because unstalling/reinstalling/praying or even treating my computer didn't work.

I am operating on a Dell Inspiron Laptop and i've checked 4k times for system req's, i got mehself some updated drivers, and All that jazz.  i'm convinced that IT'S NOT ME! OR MY COMP!  if there is some sort of code i need to punch in tell me but BIOWARE HELP US!!! (and no i do not have access to 2 disc drives so i can install the game).  On a related but different note is everyone here using a disc?  because this could all be fixed if they were to let us download the game online with proof of purchase and our athentication key.  That is, if its only a disc thing

Ok just found a major breakthrough here, Thing is I used a trainer to get some extra resources.. ofc YES I TRIED TO CHEAT, and I saved the game afterwards...

Now I was seeing if I rename or switch folders on documents/bioware/mass effect 2 happens to make the game work, but if I put the old stuff there, game crashes and problems arise... try on ppl see what can be done!

I've checked my system req's and whether all my stuff is updated 4k times ITS NOT ME. Can you tell me the magic code please? Is this only happening to disc users? Because if so, then Bioware can make a version available for download online w/ proof of purchase and authentication key. Might solve all our problems. I DON'T WANT TO RETURN THIS GAME! But if this isn't fixed by saturday by 1 PM Central time i'm outty.

Try a no CD crack or stuff on gamecopyworld.

like mounting a virtual dvd on virtual drive Daemon tools..

Might solve your problem.

Manual copy of english.rar from the second disk worked for me too - how the heck does an installer miss an entire file like that?!? Come on Bioware, you're better than this...

Hello everyone. I'm having a similar problem. This is all quoted from the Steam forums, as mine is a Steam download. No one has came up with a fix yet that works for me, so now I'm here. I hope this helps with the steps I've taken to troubleshoot this. =/
Okay, well, I'm basically having almost
the same problem, or possibly the same exact problem. I can get the
Launcher for ME2 to open, I can go to the config, etc. When I try to
launch the actual game, it ACTS like it's loading, but does nothing.
Everything freezes except the mouse. It has the "loading" pointer
(hourglass) and I can move the mouse around, but I can't click anything.
I've left it for well over 30 minutes and nothing happened. I've tried
CTRL+ALT+DEL to try and get the Task Manager but it never works. The
only thing I can do is much the RESET button. I've tried everything
suggested here and then some (I know I deleted/redownloaded, but after
that, I forget what else I did) and it's still not working...

Here's my PC Specs (using DXDiag), followed by a description from the
Event Log, which PhoR suggested:

Any help from anyone is appreciated. I'd love to play, and getting quite
frustrated...

My problem is different because I can still
use my computer(open the task manager, etc), but I won't be surprised if
it's they have the same cause.

I'm loading me2 onto my work machine right now gonna see if that
works(my work is cool with that). I did notice a suspicious stuck task
in the task manager called something like graphicsoverlay that was from
steam. It hung around after I killed the game and exited steam. Maybe
steam is doing something funky with the overlay in Bioware games? maybe
running ads or something?

Okay, well, I started up Task Manager to
see about the "graphicsoverlay" you mentioned, MagicPants. Either the
screen froze before it came up, or it never came up at all. I'm not
sure. What happened for me was the game apparently was attempting to
load. The CPU Percentage and RAM Usage kept going around a little bit.
When the screen froze, it was stuck at 76% CPU Usage and 242940 RAM
Usage. The funny/weird thing was, I could still hear people signing on
and off on my messenger program but everything was froze. I'm not 100%
sure what to make of this situation...

Edit: Sorry for the double post. =/

Well I tried it at work on a winxp 32 bit
machine and it works, so I don't think my account it hosed. Odd that
it's all Bioware games. Anyway the task that sticks in win7 64bit is
called "GameOverlayUI.exe"

Weird. I'm on WinXP and it won't work for
me. Any idea what SP that machine is using?

Service pack 3. Anyone know if Bioware uses
additional DRM? You have any other bioware-steam games miseryindeath? Do
they work?

I have Jade Empire: Special Edition on
Steam. I haven't tried it lately. Let me give it a shot and I'll edit
this with results.

Edit as mentioned: Well, semi-surprising results. Jade Empire did almost
the same exact thing. The window came up asking if I wanted to launch
the game or the config, I hit game. It started to start up, but in a
different move, my mouse got locked into a box in the upper right corner
of the screen then things proceeded the same as they have before. After
a while, nothing was clickable but I could still move the mouse (only
in that box). Ended up restarting the entire computer.

Edit again: Here's my results from the Event Log when launching Jade
Empre; pretty much same as ME2.

Faulting application jadeempire.exe, version 1.0.0.0, faulting module
jadeempire.exe, version 1.0.0.0, fault address 0x00193850.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft....link/events.asp.

What is the EventID associated with that "faulting
application" error in the event log?

Event ID: 1000

Damn. That's one of the most generic errors you
can get. Doesn't tell us much. Posted Image

Well, that just sucks. I'd like to at
least get in-game and see what all the fuss is about. Like I said in my
very first post, I've tried almost everything I can think of, plus
everything I can find on these here forums and nothing has worked. Posted Image

start > run > regedit

navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Wow632Node/Valve/Steam/Apps/24980

Do you have two keys called DXSetup and VCERedist? Both should be value
1

Well, I have both keys but there was a
slight variation. It went from SOFTWARE to VALVE, skipping the
Wow632Node portion. Is that a problem?

Btw, both values are set to 1.

Ya, that should be fine, the path I linked is for
Win7x64 and I forgot you're running WinXP.

Hrm.

Have you tried running the latest DirectX 9.0c installer manually to
make sure it's not something in the DXapi that's causing it to lock up?

http://www.microsoft...&displaylang=en

Not yet. I'll give it a shot right now and
post back with results.

Edit: That link said I have an equivalent or newer version of DirectX,
so that was a no go. =(

Well, I gave up and deleted/uninstalled it
using RevoUninstaller. It deleted all the registry entries as well.
Time to redownload and see how well this goes. Will post back tomorrow,
hopefully with "third time's a charm..."

No luck on my end either. Just retried it.
Same exact thing. Same thing in Event Log.

Faulting application masseffect2.exe, version 1.0.1593.2, faulting
module masseffect2.exe, version 1.0.1593.2, fault address 0x005cf56f.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft....link/events.asp.
Edit: Sorry for the random quote stuff. I just got all the quotes together from the other forum and copied/pasted.

Got it to work, took out all Cd's in my drivers and only had my ME2 disc(s) in the driver. during the installing the wrong driver didn't come out and the right one did, when i started the game it worked and have played for 13 hours now and haven't had any problems as of yet.

not yet...

Im on my 12th install (not really counting... done alot of times though) and still nothing...

EDIT: Still no luck on getting the game to load after clicking play on the launcher but i do have all the things from the cerebus network.. wheres the preorder armor (inferno i believe)?

I was told by GAME (retail outlet in England) that the armor is part of the collectors eddition and that they had no spare copies of the collectors eddition to sell to people who didn't preorder.. is that true or do i need to have a couple of words tomorrow?
