had same problem. after install, the launcher would come up but when i pressed 'play' all i got was a black screen and then a windows 7 (64-bit) message that 'mass effect 2 has stopped working'. installing with each dvd in its own drive fixed it for me. frustratingly bush-league.
Mass effect 2 wont start

OK I did finally get mine to work, having both disk in my 2 DVD drives fixed the problem, the installation did not stop and everything is working now. I think the installer is a piece of crap and that may be what is causing a lot of the problems. If it get interupted during install in screws up the files.
I wish BIOWARE would at least comment on these posts.

I'm just going to return mine. First Dragon Age has huge memory leak problems and now the installer will not work on this AND after finally getting it to install it crashes upon launching. I've lost all respect for this company.

Here's my 2 cents on the crash on start up:
Intel Quad-Core CPU
Windows 7 64-bit
4GB RAM
512MB ATI 4800 series gfx card
I have 2 DVD drives and re-installing the game did not work. Nor did upgrading various drivers. I ended up setting the CPU affinity to a single CPU before starting play. This has worked for me so far and I've yet to have a crash 3-4hours into the game.
Be warned - do not set the CPU affinity until you've finished with the configuration utility. It crashed for me on a single CPU.
If you're unfamiliar with setting the CPU affinity in Windows 7:
1. Run the ME2 launch screen.
2. Right-click the task bar and select 'Start Task Manager'
3. Right-click on 'MassEffect2Launcher.exe *32'
4. Select 'Set Affinity' from the context menu.
5. Deselect all CPUs and just pick one. I picked CPU1.
6. Close the Task Manager and go back to the ME2 launch screen and hit 'Play'.
You're likely to have to do this everytime you run the launch screen. Good luck and have fun should this work for you.

I had the same problem with the game crashing at startup.
I also have two DVD-drives and the installer kept spitting out my Dragon Age DVD.
After 2 not working installations, I put a DVD in each of my drives and that worked for me.
So it seems as if the installer has an issue as soon as he has to change DVDs on different drives.

Guys, try this one: download DVD Images from gamecopyworld.com and mount them with daemon tools, set two drives and mount them as virtual images, or, use a RIP program to rip the ISO from both DVDs and mount them with two drives from daemon tools...
Actually i think gamecopyworld's way easier!

Bump = I am not sure if other people are still having trouble with this but I am.
Also to note - game is only installing like 9.45gigs not the 11gigs it should on installation, so obviously that is the problem...... but how to fix that? Installed it like a billion times now, with two copys.

I am reinstalling as we speak with 1 disk in each drive (knock on wood).
For folks with only one drive wonder if they could use a virtual drive to copy disk 2 onto before install?

Valkz181....you are missing files, check some of the other posts, there is instructions on how to get the files you are missing, I think it is the English files that you are missing. You fold size needs to be 11.4GB.....
Ok another option, I contacted EA tech support for ME2 via chat, talked with her for about an hour and after explaining exactly what was happening (about 3 times) she finally gave me a link to download the game via D2D. She had to register my CD Key with their system to do this, you can not just go get it if you are not suppose to.
I never tried it because when I tried the 2 DVD thing it worked just fine.
All of you that is still having problems you may want to try and see if they will let you do a D2D download and see if that helps.
If you have question regarding my setup or configuration feel free to ask.

i also still have this glitch and i have 11.4GB!!
I've also tried installing Mass Effect (the first of the trilogy) but i still have the same problem... Neither the first and second do not work but Dragon Age is Fine!
Is there a fix for my problem? if neither work then maybe a fix that would help other play the first may also be worth trying on the second
Your thoughts?

Mass effect 1 and 2 are the only games which screws around with me btw... i never have problems like this with my other games

Valkz181: Mine did the same thing. Try manually unzipping the "english.rar" archive on the second disk into the main game folder. Worked fine for me, anyway - looks like the installer has issues deciding which language to install, and so somehow manages not to install one at all...

ok about the crash that happens in mass2...when u load up the starter and go play game, it may load to a black screen, then get that microsoft send error report...other times, it doesn't go even that far and immediately says not respondin or some such thing....i could not solve this, so a friend of mine tickered with it, he's my roomate. he figured there was somethin wrong in the app files...donin some more tinkerin and forum reading, i believe this was the local
http://social.biowar...766531/1#767671 . He found out was goin on, or at least in my case. the original start up function the first steps actually gets installed partly from disc 1 and from disc 2...if u do not have both of the discs in two drives at once, it tends to skip some important info...i reinstalled my game and had both disc1 and disc2 in my drives...it finished downloading, i tried it and i can now play and its awesome...i hope to god that this may help others

I'm having same problem I tried to re-install but didn't work. Its rather annoying that I spent money just to get to launch it and have it crash after 1sec of looking at a black screen

Valkz181: Try winRAR, if you haven't already, and don't use the extract function, just open the archive and drag-and-drop. Worked fine for me, been playing for days now without a single crash.

Can't get it to run. Have done everything tried everything... It was running fine for a few days, I was playing away, then after a reboot, I run the icon as admin and it acts like it is about to sytart, and then... nothing. I have rebuilt my Windows 7 x64 installation twice. Re-installed ME2 about 11 times, still the same thing. How can a game work for a good while and then stop functioning for no reason? Dragoin Age did the EXACT same thing to me. That has not worked in months!
I have twin Corsair 256GB SSD's mounted in a RAID 0 array for a C drive. Thinking that was the problme, I installed Steam and ME2 to a conventional SATA HDD RAID 0 array (D:\\) and that did not do the trick either.
Both DAO and ME2 are Steam downloads.
System:
Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (6.1, Build 7600) (7600.win7_rtm.090713-1255)
Processor: Intel® Core2 Quad CPU Q9550 @ 2.83GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.8GHz
Memory: 8192MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 8126MB RAM
Page File: 2482MB used, 13766MB available
DirectX Version: DirectX 11
Any help would be appreciated. This is driving me nuts, and I consider myself a serious techie... I do this for a living at a VERY high level, and I can't figure this out... I bet it is something simple too!

Ok I had the problem where I clicked play and it would get to the point where it said not responding. I deleted the exe/launcher from the main folder and went into the binaries folder and clicked on that exe/launcher and it worked... dont know why but it did.
