In DAO, we are told that Bryce and Howe were friends and fought together against the Orlesians. This is meant to make the Cousland Massacre all that much morwe poignant. However, since that is the first time we see Howe, to use he is just one noble who covets power above everything. Scummy, but expected.

Well, now The World of Thedas Volume 2 gives us the full story.

During the Rebellion, there were two armies, that of the North and of the South. The Nothern army was composed mainly of nobles whose holdings were near coast of the Waking Sea. Naturally, that meant Bryce and Howe were both in it.

After Moira's death, the army of the South searched for Maric while the army of the North tried to stop two newly arrived legions of Chevaliers from reaching the Hinterlands. They were defeated and only fifty soldiers survived. Howe took a spear to the gut and, unfortunately, Bryce saved him ending up wounded himself.

The survivors retreated to a farm and, during the night, Howe's condition worsened and Bryce, despite his wounds, made the half day journey to the nearest village and returned with an healer the next night.

When the survivors moved to join with the army of the South, Howe couldn't accompany them so Bryce stayed with him and made the journey at Howe's pace, reuniting with them only a month later.

Then, when the war was over and Howe married, take a guess at who were the only two people to attend the wedding.

Bryce and Eleanor.

Son of a b*tch...How could he?!

We do get a possible glimpse into Howe's psyche in the Awakening expansion of Origins. Apparently Howe was connected by marriage to a very rich family. How rich you ask? So rich that they looked down on the lord of an esteemed arling in the form of Amaranthine, a notable trade power in the region, and considered him with contempt. Their origins are unknown, but the mother of the bride would apparently visit and deride Howe for his lesser status.

Perhaps this drove a man who by all rights should have been content with his life, a powerful lord with many vassals, over the edge and made him risk everything by betraying everyone who ever trusted him. It was his desire to impress his wife's family, and show them up.

By all means that does not excuse the man's dishonorable actions - he deserved a slower death than the one he suffered at the hands of our Wardens.

The book actually talks about his wife.

She was the sister of another of the soldiers in the rebel army and they were half-orlesian. She was an accomplished herbalist and physician and took care of Howe while he recoved. Eventually, he proposed to her.

When his brother in law came to speak to him, Howe straight up told him he was only marrying for her dowry and connections.

He really has no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

The books may have gone a step further in making Howe even more unlikable. They did the opposite for Loghain, giving him more context and justifications for his later actions. I have not read them and only know of them by forum chat.

Nothing redeeming about him at all, so this is no surprise to me. I couldn't find one ounce of good in that man, even when I RP. Thankfully his eldest son turned out to be a good, kind man who can finally give the Howe name respect.

Agreed. That was a relationship that would be a good start in healing the damage between the two houses. And my Cousland trusted Nathaniel with her life.

I would probably like Nathaniel more if it didn't feel like my Warden was speaking to his twin.

Darker hair is more dominant?

Alistair is a blonde and Loghain is a brunette, but no matter what your Warden is, all 3 get the same looking child. Lol

It's true, my Warden has a much better looking nose, can't deny it.

At any rate, Kieran is probably modeled after the Cousland family

Loghain knew what he was doing in the end. He may have had good intentions but he's still just as guilty as Howe.

I will say at the very least he HAD good intentions. Howe on the other hand.....

Looks like it! I love how he has a GW symbol on his outfit too. Shows where his blood comes from. Morrigan is no doubt proud to have a son related to a GW and/or an OG.

Headcanon time: If the Warden romanced and traveled through the mirror with Morrigan, the pendant Kieran wears is the one Alistair gave him after his Joining.

Oh Loghain did a lot especially to Maric . He wanted Maric storng and when an elven orlesian spy in love with Maric betrayed her employer the mage Severus , Loghain knew that she was telling the truth but he told maric that she was guilty, so Maric killed her.

Flemth tells Maric about Loghain - Keep him with you and he will betray you again and again, each time the worst

I feel like Howe was a bit cartoonish. I mean, the man was a viper and I would have gladly eviscerated him with a freezing rune-enchanted dagger, but for crying out loud it's like the guy slapped his mother when he was born and aspired to be Gargamel at 6.

I bet Bryce wish that he'd let Howe die when he had the chance.

Wow.  :o I haven't picked up World of Thedas yet, so didn't know that. My Warden is always female Cousland, so that adds to her story. That b*****d!  I loved being able to make my Warden and Nathaniel friends in Awakening. A fitting end to all the tragedy.
