Pretty simple really.  Ever since playing ME 2 I have had a tough time playing anything else.  Especially anything else with a 'story' in it or single player gameplay.  I am still fine playing through Sports games but ninety nine percent of all other games that I have tried have been empty, lifeless and frustrating.

My favorite story on this is the game I played before ME 2 was MW 2...rather loved it.  Played ME 2...played MW 3...and finished it in about a week, eight hours and was like...that's it?  Keep in mind the campaigns I usually played were between 5-20 hours (with the exception of Ace Combat...loved that game)...

But anyways:

  • Realistic compelling characters.
  • Good stories.
  • Easy to comprhend gameplay that allows you to roleplay and be philosophical instead of thrills a minute and figuring out puzzles.

I have tried other games which require you to puzzle out how to use the environment to advance...yeah that often leaves me frustrated.  May be my own damn fault but I want to be challenged on phillosophical merits...not mathamatical ones...if that makes sense.

Gender choice and the consistent availability of all classes and "races" to both genders is one of the strongest points in Bioware's favor for me. They're not the only ones who do this, but they they can be trusted to do it, and they've improved diversity (not only regarding gender) in their NPCs to boot. Though I don't even really identify as female, this is still extremely important to me.

I agree that the characters are also one of Bioware's biggest strengths. The main plots, IMO and unfortunately, were never that great because while the potential was always there and made for the occasional moment of memorable brilliance, the consistent depth and attention that main plots call for were not. But yes, the characters. I'm an old nostalgic fan of the Ultima series -- or to be precise, the middle trilogy and U7 -- and until BG2 came along there were basically no games that even tried to recapture any of Ultima's focus on plot and characters. Bioware not only basically resurrected a genre, it also reminded players that RPG means more than just hack'n'slash and grinding for "ph4t l3wt". They found that niche of putting effort into their NPCs early and ran with it, and I'm very glad for it. I can still hear the voices of many characters from the BG series in my head, and from the later games too. Talk about memorable!
