From what I read, Bioware was forced to add Orsino as a boss battle to make things "more interesting" or something in DA2, no matter how much sense it made (or lack of sense it made if you allied with the mages and mopped the floor with the Templars), so why not have Varric say (maybe to Cassandra) something like "Oh, Orsino wasn't killed, it was just my idiot editor who forced me to add that stupid part."

Wait, that's why they had Orsino turn into a blood mage freak made of corpses? It did seem weird to me that he would go that far...

And it would be pretty awesome if Varric said something like that.

That's why he does it on the Mage path. He's supposed to go coo-coo for coco-puffs if you side with the templars.

Yeah, that's what I meant. Sorry I didn't make it more clear.

It would mean that they would have to retcon it out and think of a new way to deal with Orsino. Sure, Varric could say "No-one wanted to hear about how Orsino got an arrow to the throat so i made it more interesting." but it could come off as a bit lazy and i think Bioware just wants to move away from DA2 due to the mixed reception it got.

Hey, Varric's writing isn't that bad.

If you ask him about the Orsino fight he does say that what Orsino did didn't make any sense, then you get slight disapproval, don't know why, since he agrees with you about it, probably a passive aggressive writer punishing you for pointing out the flaws in the story.

I get the feeling he's uncomfortable talking about it, and God knows, it was just weird.

but you can ask him many other question about his book, about Hawk, Bartrand, his friends, people's whose fate directly impact him on a personal level with no approval change, just the weird twisty plot device gets the point hit

I think the approval hit is because he's the one telling the story.  It's a bit like calling him a liar.  Not exactly, but I can't imagine anyone wants to hear their story doesn't make sense.  It's the only way he knows to tell it.

I took it as the writers/devs not being happy about the negative reaction.
(Towards adding a second boss battle)

But, I could be wrong.

If you think about it, we just said the same thing.  I agree.  It's their story.
