Everyone likes to make out that these guys are the masters of storytelling and it would seem a good way to become unpopular is to talk ill of them, but are Telltale really all that? Of course publishers love to perpetuate this lie as they hand them the keys to some of their biggest franchises like Walking Dead, Borderlands, Game of Thrones and even Minecraft for fucks sake, but the truth is publishers only really like them for one reason, their games are relatively cheap to produce and given a popular licence they can be quite profitable as well, but what makes Telltale so popular among the fanbase?

Of course I do have to admit that what they did with the ending to Walking Dead season 1 was brilliant and a lot of it had to do with the build up of the relationship of Clem and Lee over the course of the series and while I did enjoy Wolf Among us and am enjoying Tales of the Borderlands, Telltale has somehow gotten it in their head that they have the writing chops to tackle Game of Thrones but can you honestly say they are up to the task? So far their attempt at Game of Thrones has been little more than poorly written fanfiction with their bland imitations of more popular Game of Thrones characters somehow getting chummy with all the major players despite not having much relevance to anything in the canon. The scene in which Ramsay Snow stabs one of the playable characters in the throat in the first episode comes off as little more than a desperate attempt at saying "hey look gaiz, we can game of thrones too!", all in all their attempt at Game of Thrones has been so utterly boring that I can hardly find the motivation to play through the other episodes.

So what exactly makes Telltale so great?

I thought they did really well with Game of Thrones, actually. Not sure if I can call it a game, though. There is hardly any puzzles in the game, and you have zero chance at getting stuck. Interactive movie, I think I would call it. The same goes for the second TWD season.

Not sure what makes them great, though. I think its because the story in the games are very good. The games are good at making the player actually care about the characters. I dunno. They seem to have the good parts you would find in a good book?

I just really like them, I guess.

Merely calling it as I see it, people are free to disagree with my opinion, I like to keep an open mind to all perspectives as others may see things that I have missed.

I don't think the OP is here to pick a fight. The first post is way too long for someone who just wants to troll.

It comes off as trying to pick a fight to me but that's just me. As I said I haven't played the games so I won't weigh in on this conversation anymore. Good luck

They're entertaining little interactive TV show-esque things that always have some great storytelling, characters, voice acting, etc. I don't even like Borderlands but Telltale's Tales From the Borderlands was a complete blast for instance.

Just don't go in expecting riveting gameplay or half as much choice and consequence as they claim to have.

They have a system that works.

May not be Video games in the traditional sense (The last one to fit that definition was Back to the Future which was very much a point-and-click), but I feel that they represent their properties accurately (I enjoy the GoT game so far).

It's fun 'nuff. Just wish the release of episodes wasn't as stretched out.

And GoT needs to allow you to break from canon so I can forcefeed Ramsay my cane like I did Gryff.

Everything gets too much hype anymore

Funny you mention Jurassic Park. Because Telltale did one before they had everything figured out.

It was a ****** terrible Heavy Rain knockoff.

Jurassic World could be the worst film ever made, and it'd still be better than that pile of ****.

TellTale currently has the best writing, storytelling and characterization in the industry.  Not far behind is Naughty Dog.  No offense, but IMO the levels of their craft (In terms of writing and character development) really put BioWare to shame.  Using movies as an analogy: in terms of storytelling, BioWare makes Michael Bay popcorn flicks; TellTale makes Oscar-season nominees and contenders.

Maybe like one or two games, but nothing substantial.

They did do two games based on the first two volumes of Bone though. Which I didn't know and that's cool.

The OP has a tendency to do that -- Perhaps he/she is quite bored why else would said person chose to make an account in here solely to do this.

Anyway, in relations to the thread.

I'm not big on the Walking Dead or their Game of Thrones thing.. I am, however, big on Tales from the Borderlands

Tales from the Borderlands is a reflection of the games they used to make before these pseudo-adventure games of today -- A lot of them consist of former LucasArts employees who worked on Monkey Island, Sam & Max, Grim Fandango etc. Adventure games with depth, puzzles and riddles to solve to proceed.

Their Borderlands game carries that great sense of humor that made those LucasArts adventures memorable and fun -- The humor was actually genuinely funny, unlike say the main Borderlands titles, and the characters are memorable and that's enough for me. People can call them not-games if they want, but if that's the case the most 90s adventure titles aren't games either and one could easily argue the same for a lot of other games. No matter how much these games don't play like Devil May Cry or Witcher or whatever, it doesn't make them not-games. I'm not the biggest fan of Gone Home, but I recognize that it is a still game because it is.

Anyway, yeah

That is the very assertion I am questioning yet am failing to see the reason for such a claim, also not sure what you are basing you claim that Naughty Dog is second on the list on?

Don't know how high on the pedestal the fanbase likes to view Telltale as, but sure I say that they deserve credit for the work they have done. By having shifted their focus from puzzle games to telling a moving story, they have limited themselves on the "gameplay" spectrum in favor of an interactive story, which largerly has been a success. From my experiences of the games that I have played (meaning TWD S1 and TWAU) they are solid entries in what they establish, in trying to get the player engaged and feel like an active player in the story. Considering that the entries varies from tone and style (to some extent), e.g. with Borderlands being more quirky and up beat, and with GoT being as serious as the show is, they have room to tackle different variations when it comes to games and offers enjoyment for different people looking for different things (more power to you if you enjoy evertying they do).

I wouldn't praise them as masters of story telling and their handling of choices and consequences, but they do a good enough job I find to make the experience worthwhile.

On television, Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead are the two biggest competitors: they are considered to be the two best on TV right now.  TellTale makes games for both.

Right now, a lot of film, TV and game companies are seeking out TellTale to make games for their IPs - with the purpose of freshing out backgrounds, stories and characters for their IP.  That's the reputation TellTale has.  FYI: I believe Disney/Marvel is actually looking into teaming up TellTale to do a series of story-oriented games for their MCU, to fresh out side characters in MCU.  I've heard some studios are actually looking to hire TellTale writers to try out and do some rewrites for film and TV projects - even BioWare writers have never gotten that level of attention from Hollywood.  I think no game writers ever have before TellTale.

Not a fan at all myself, as far as interactive drama thingies Don'tnod is a lot more interesting. As far as games go well a lot of games are more interesting. As far as literature goes Game of Thrones is more interesting to me by itself.

It seems their success has mostly to do with the walking dead which I don't care for at all.

Just because I disagree with your assertion that Emo Anime Tween games (aka Persona) are brilliant does not mean I am looking to pick a fight, seriously mang if anyone is looking for a fight it is you and Fade with your constant stalking trying to convince me of my wrongdoing in questioning the quality of the Persona games.

I acknowledge that you and Fade like the Persona games however I just can't say they are games that appeal to me, that is the end of the discussion and no amount of stalking and ironically referring to the Persona series as "Emo Teen trash" will change that. Let it go mang, attacking me every chance you get only perpetuates your own bitterness.

The most compelling story in a game was Red Dead Redemption anyhow.

I think at a certain point people just expect kind of a "what do you like then" sort of thing to happen. When it's all negative people just get all negative back. Granted you said you liked Season 1 TWD I suppose.

The most compelling story in a game was Red Dead Redemption anyhow.

Something like Shadow of the Colossus destroys RDR to be honest... well... I can think of a lot of examples though..
