Telltale games, are they really as great as they are made out to be?

I enjoyed TWD S1, S2, and The Wolf among Us - do not have the new GoT game or Tales of the Borderlands (although I have played the first two Borderlands games and do enjoy the silly humor). You appear to enjoy TotB - the one game out of the bunch that's gotten the worst reviews out of the bunch - yet.you don't like their GoT adaptation, which as far as I can tell from reviews I've read, seems to have garnered way more positive reaction than TotB has. *shrug*

It just goes to show that taste is, as always, completely subjective. As for Telltale games overall, they can be a bit hit-or-miss, in my opinion, but they've a number of good games - some better than others (really, TWD S1 is the one that I enjoyed the most for the story, the characters, and the emotional notes).

Reviews mean less than squat to me however it is rare to see a Telltale product receive an unfavorable review and even should one happen to do so you risk earning the ire of the fanbase. I am not calling Telltale games garbage (except for perhaps their attempt at Game of Thrones) just nowhere near as great as people make them out to be, at best they are at least somewhat entertaining even if they are a little shallow.

I guess why I prefer Tales of the Borderlands over Telltale's Game of Thrones is because it does not try to take itself seriously where their attempt at Game of Thrones tries to do so only to fall flat on it's face

TWD S1? Absolutely! After that what they've made have been decent or better. S2 for TWD I really loved and Wolf was interesting while it never captured my interest that much. GoT sounded so great in theory but so far that's been mostly unfullfilled even if there've been some truly great moments. The Borderlands game is rather entertaining but hte downtime between episodes is just ridiculous and make it hard to even remember what happened in each episode

I have only played Walking Death season 1&2 and The Wolf Among Us.

I loved Season 1 of The Walking Death. Season 2 was alright, I still really enjoyed it, but it wasn't as good as Season 1.

The Wolf Among Us was an interesting case (no pun intended) because of its mystery detective theme. I really liked that. However it still wasn't near the level of Season 1 Walking Death.

My opinion is that their success of The Walking Death has gone way over their head. They took on too many projects afterwards, which caused a decrease in quality in everything that followed.

Some are good some are not good, but overall the most thing I don't like about Telltale is the time period between their episodes is so big that I lose my entire interest in the game, the story and its characters.

Yeah, Telltale games are pretty overrated. They have dramatic stories and fairly interesting characters, but the choices do not matter. That's why I lost interest eventually. What's the point of caring about character X if they die in the next episode anyway? Sure, it makes for a dramatic moment but it's so annoying. Makes you stop giving a damn. The long wait between episodes doesn't help either.

Episodic stories are an extremely poor choice for choice driven narratives.

Episodic gaming is irritating as it just generally exist to interrupt the pacing, even to a point where it just feels like the game halts to slap you in the face to see if you're still paying attention. It's especially worse when it is with games like Alan Wake where atmosphere and tension is key.

That's among the largest drawbacks for games like Telltale, anyway.

Walking dead S1 was a good game. It went into great deal to develop characters, over long period of time with whom we felt attachment.

Season 2 was a fail unfortunately.

And game of thrones, well I got the latest episode but simply cant make myself play it.

While certain limitations in storytelling were OK for TWD S1 were OK, following their financial success they should have expanded greatly on the storyline and gameplay. Instead, they are stagnating.

I don't think the OP is here to pick a fight. The first post is way too long for someone who just wants to troll.

I honestly didn't think anyone was left to get sucked in, but give it time, you'll see it.

Having tried most of them, I end up quitting them rather quickly. I am not fan of "no win" scenarios nor am I fan of conjuring up drama and things just to get some kind of emotional reaction out of a player.

I've only played Walking Dead and their Sam n Max stuff. So far so good. I see that there aren't good reviews for the GoT stuff, but I'll probably get around to it.

I've just found out that John Riccitiello, the former CEO of Electronic Arts who acquired BioWare for EA, has joined TellTale Games' Board of Directors in February of 2015.

Here is a reminder.  We are talking about this guy:

I do not know how much influence he has over TellTale Games' operations; (hopefully, none.)  So TellTale may degrade into the same situation as BioWare: it's all about squeezing every penny of of customers, shaking down the customers, when they are at their least "price sensitive" moments.

Oh well, good things never last...

John "Chef Boyardee" Ravioli probably won't have much of an influence there and if he does it probably won't be the introduction of microtransactions but then again in this crazy industry anything could happen.

I liked TWD1 didn't care for 2 couldn't get past episode 1 of wolf and I don't feel like playing the borderlands until it's all out but GoT feels ok Right now I feel like their claims to the Iron throne of story telling maybe be coming to an end or at least have a civil war soon

I thoroughly enjoyed TWD Seasons 1 and 2.  Season 1 was definitely superior, but Season 2 was solid as well.  I'm eagerly awaiting the next season.  Both were really great.  I have few critiques here, to be honest.

I played TWAU and liked it, but I have no real prior connection to the source material and I'm not sure if they did a good enough job of getting me invested in the characters.  It was fine, but I won't rush to play the second season, if it comes out.

I am actively playing GoT and loving it.  It's not the most creative game (a bunch of the characters/situations feel like retreads of exisiting canon material), but it's enjoyable and I'm thoroughly invested in House Forrester's fate.

Tales from the Borderlands is my least favorite.  It's probably because I don't really care for the setting that much (I only played Borderlands 2 for about 3 hours before completely losing interest) and I find the two main characters to be contrived:  cocky scruffy brunnette white guy and sarcastic yet sexy bombshell white lady thrust together by fate with an antagonist relationship with each other.  Yawn.  I played the first two episodes but it's always my last pick when there's nothing left to play.

In general, I find their games enjoyable, but I have no illusions about what they are:  effectively digital "Choose your own Adventure" games with a few quicktime events and a distinct lack of meaningful "consequences" for your choices.  Sure, your decision might save a character from death, but that just effectively means that the character is going to have an unavoidable scripted death coming up in order to bring all branching pathways back together again.  They are enjoyable (and certainly "real" video games, which is one of the stupidest critiques I've ever heard), but they don't feature cutting edge anything to be honest.  That being said, I'll continue to play them for settings in which I'm already invested.

I've enjoyed every Telltale game I've ever played and I've played A LOT of Telltale Games.

The only thing I don't like is waiting for the next episode to drop!

I was hoping that BioWare and Telltale would make an awesome Dragon Age Episodic game like what they did with Borderlands.

To be honest Dragon Age would probably be a perfect fit for Telltale
