I've finished the game twice and got most of the way through a third playthrough when my computer suddenly ate it. I got a new laptop and started a fourth playthrough. I have just finished JoH, so only the Arbor Wilds and the final confrontation are left before I complete the game again. What has kept me interested is the enjoyment of traveling through beautiful environments and the fact that I really like my companions and my LI. What can I say, I seem to have a thing for guys with blue eyes and beards who aren't actually Wardens.
I also really enjoy being a mage (which is why I've played a mage each time *cough*), and I am sometimes surprised by new bits of banter that I haven't seen before even with hundreds of hours in the game or finding new things. For example, I got some interactive banter between Cole and Dorian for the first time ever while wandering through the Frostback Basin (go figure - probably should have happened at least once before, considering how often I take them with me).
Oh, and I have fun with MP on occasion - which is why I have 582 hours in the game at this point.
Haven't played since January.
Same here. Tried to get through second playthrough but ran out of steam during Wicked Hearts mission and just dropped it.
Will try again once new story content is added. Hoping that new story + time between playing last will make it a better experience.
I am not going to disagree with the Op on this one.
I Got the game pretty much day one as well. I have tried three times to start a character and finish, I am in the third play through now. ( I have never been able to make my self finish any of them yet )
On all of them I made it past that terrible Wicked Hearts, and wicked whatever thing. (Which is where I am at on this third attempt to finish it at least once)
But I am losing desire to complete it again. I am not sure why. Maybe it's wicked Heart's, just turns my stomach so much that I lose interest. I really don't know.
Maybe its the repeditive fetch all kinds of item's, just to have some stupid big bottoms girl tell me "This could Help!" and if I make the item I get nothing for it but a loss of matt's, and a power point of which I have many more than I need.
I know you don't have to do them all, but that crazy "Inquisitioner!" she keeps slamming me with ( like it's the all important, most grand thing in the world, and You just have to do it ), makes you or me feel like I ought to do it.
Maybe its's the way the Quests are handles, that stupid board you have to travel back to all the time. Get's old, and I sit, and read the cards while the game slowly installs the Graphic item's, and finally pops me into the area I need to be.
Then I can run up the step's through about 4 door's, and wait a moment for a slightly faster load to see the board.
Do the one or two things on the board I think are needed, and then, back to the loading screen to wait until I get back where I think I need to be. Then I can walk five miles of game territory to get where I was, and start back doing something exciting for awhile.
But then I realize maybe I should do that other thing before I finish this..Hummm! should I go back there.. Darn, I am not sure.
Oh but I have enough shards, I better go back to that place, and see if I can open another door there.
(But that will be another long transition screen)
I think I will try at the Dark emporium again to see if I can finally get this ugly character to look right. yeah, I should do that too.
(But that will be another long transition screen)
But wait, did I ask so, and so about that problem they have, I do need to get those personal quest's done. don't want to miss any of those. Hummm!
(But that will be another long transition screen)
Well darn, I really ment to try and make myself some better armor, I need to do that too. Mine is good, but My tank really needs and upgrade..Hummm!
(But that will be another long transition screen)
Now should I give them this ring, or this one, there pretty close one of them is purple, so surely thats the best one.. Humm!
I am really not sure why I have been unable to stay solid, and finish it ( I have finished all the other DA, ME quest's many time's, and could easy do one of them again ), I am really fighting trying to finish it this time, but I do understand the OP's Thinking, and I can not deny that I have been in the same boat, and am rowing it again now.
Jaws of Hakkon kept me interested for a while.
I'll return with the release of the next DLC. Until then I'll mostly be play Witcher 3 I guess. Not sure if I'll finish it though. it'll take me months just to completed Vellen. LOL
i bought jaws of hakkon, but havent finished it, its kind of lost its thrill which is weird the first 2 games i did everything and enjoyed it.
I'm just going to give myself a bunch of power so I don't have to do side quests. ![]()
Also: Gameplay/Multiplayer is fast becoming my secondary reason for buying any Bioware game, with 'the world' coming in as primary, companions tertiary, and story is not a factor.

I'm not I haven't played since December and probably never will again
The first playthrough already was a pain (after Skyhold at least), there were just sooo many lame fetch quests and the open world was terrible
I will probably be starting another DA:O playthrough again sure the gameplay is dated but its still better than DA:I in every way
And surprisingly it works well as a standalone (with Awakening), I do like DA2 but it ends on such a cliffhanger that you basically have to play DA:I and since that game sucks I won't

Oh great, so this is turning into yet another "let's whine about the game" thread...
I haven't and have yet to complete my 1st playthrough(sold the game) playing TW3 now which is amazing.
So just started Witcher 3... I love Geralt - so nice to see him again. And the hair!!!! Its gorgeous and it moves! LOL
How I have missed Triss and Dandelion and Zoltan! That is one advantage of not having a new protagonist every game. Like Uncharted, or Mass Effect - it feels like coming home to see old friends hn an on come ot - can wait for Uncharted 4 to see Nate again!.
At any rate The Witcher is a beautiful game.
But As much as I love the Witcher I miss DA:I already. Witcher will be slow slogging indeed. After 4 hours in, it already feels huge and overwhelming. I cant believe I complained about the font size in DA - its smaller in the Witcher and the minimap is almost unusable.
Great games can have flaws, but are usually worth slogging through the tough stuff. The Last of Us was a brilliant game IMO - but initially I could only play it a few ours at a time because it was so slow and depressing... but what a reward at the end! So my advice - hang in there - DAI is a great game!
What's keeping me interested? It's my first playthrough, and I'm only halfway through. I waited so long because how awful the last gen versions are made me skip it. But with all the patches, the last gen versions were said to be playable now. And that was true, I haven't have any major problems. Certain face and armor textures on NPCs and advisors (Cullen and Leliana look like arse) being on the crappy side and game freezes every few hours, but good other than that.
Odd-ball playthroughs, such as recreating my Hero of Ferelden and doing all the things he would have done had it been him. Some head canon required.
Another is my solo-rogue playthrough, which pretty much transforms the game into a completely new one. Some head canon used here as well. I'm also using the rogue to find all kinds of bugs, as well as sequence break. I've set this character aside though, since I've broken the game so much that it will spontaneously shut the computer down if I play with this character too much. I will have to go back in and clear out most of his saves back to the point where I first sequence broke, and then play again from there. I haven't been willing to do all of that again, so I'm just focusing on the Hero playthrough right now. I will probably only play him through the main quests. I won't bother with the side story areas. Except maybe Crestwood and Storm Coast, since it's Ferelden and all.
Also, still having the pre-patch 3 exploits helps a lot in keeping the game fun. I can duplicate materials and increase influence all I want.

You're intentionally discovering bugs? You working freelance for Bioware or EA or something? Even if not, a nice well and thoroughly written glitch and bug report sent to them might be a nice gesture.

"If you're good at something never do it for free." - The Joker
So no, I don't work for them. And yes, since I've done pretty much everything else, I am using this solo rogue to test out new things and find any bugs or exploits. It's part of the fun. Think about it. If you discovered something incredibly buggy or a trick that gives you a massive advantage, don't you think you'd be excited to find it?
I forced myself through the first time, skipped almost all of the companion quests and just rushed through to the ending - had just spent too much time doing fetch quests so my patience was thin. Re-bought the game on PC and picked a more fun class to play as (dw rogue + assassin skill tree), skipped almost all of the fetch quests and left stuff like dragons and some optional areas for post-ending, instead focused on the interesting stuff + companion quests. Ended up having a much much better time with the game.
Good to hear it gets more entertaining just focussing on story/companions.
So I suppose if you're looking to satisfy any DA cravings, but also give Inquisition a chance to recover some of its interest, I'd recommend reading the books and replaying the first two games. It's time consuming, but I've been having a blast doing it.
Heh, well I intend to play through DA:O / DA:2 before each DA:I character, and both games i've already played a lot (over 20 completed playthroughs on DA:O lol)
As for the books/comics, already read them all too lol.
Oh great, so this is turning into yet another "let's whine about the game" thread...
Well, if people arn't playing anymore because they hate the game, then i'm fine with them posting their reasons. I obviously have some negatives of my own that are stopping me from finishing.
@OT
well... i played WoW, so kind of used to all that grinding, simple fetch quests, and all that boring as hell part. it usually goes hand in hand with delightful combat mechanics, but that's not the case here (grumble grumble). anyway...
what kept me going?
i was really interested in story changes between my chars. i set up two characters - one self-righteous, religious zealot, and second - insane opportunist and joyful sadist. both of those chars were to be very deep in the 'evil' spectrum.
started with 2nd option. couldn't RP my designed character, so... kind of drifted through the game, waiting for some unique moments, uncovering the plot.
religious zealot was a bit better, even if story was a bit repeatable. again RP was too mild for me, my char was "just and honorable" all the time, i couldn't deviate much towards my initial design.
funny thing:
because of DAI i returned to WoW some time ago (~last month). and find it much more fun than it was before. even fetch quests are now rewarding RP experience.
thank you, Bioware.
I only have one serious character, which I'm playing since one week after release.
Curiously, I have no problem completing every miniquest or collection the game offers, yet I have zero motivation to do it again with a different character.
Then I also alternate between MP and SP equally.

Yes, but do we need 167546 threads for the same thing? Lately it seems almost every thread in the "feedback" forum turns into either a whinefest or Wticher 3 lovefest. I like The Witcher just as much as the next guy/gal, but I'm not going to go to the Bioware forum and crap all over their game just because I found the next newest "bright and shiny." They are two different games, and are both good in their own right.
If you have valid complaints about this game and have actual constructive feedback, then find a corresponding thread, or start your own...not turn someone else's thread into a place for people to start dumping on the game. The OP wanted to know what keeps people engaged with playing this game...not reasons 20 reasons why "Witcher 3 is better and DA:I sux0rs and I hates it!"
Talk about...
I've purchased many a game that I don't like...but I don't go to the game maker's forum just to whine about it...and I'm certainly not going to go to their forum just to say how much I love a different game more...and their game sucks.
That being said, to the OP...have you developed backstories for your characters? I find that helps to keep me engaged in any role-playing game. I have very in-depth backstories for all of my IQ's...and they're all very different. Having distinct personalities set in my head keeps each playthrough fresh. I also don't go "completionist" with every playthrough. I will complete everything in one zone per playthrough, so that I can fully experience each zone...spread across multiple playthroughs.
I replay because I find the principal cast and possible character interactions extremely interesting. I enjoy playing as different genders, races, classes, and mindsets, and find the game responds to these choices in interesting ways. This is typically my favorite part of a role-playing game, so I will forgive other elements I enjoy less if I think the characters I generate or meet are interesting.
I probably enjoy the combat mechanics more than someone can't bring themselves to finish. I would have preferred a more robust tactics menu, but by and large I thought combat worked as well or better in this game as in the previous two.
I rather liked the main story. Cory can be a bit underwhelming as a villain, but is two potential underlings are pretty compelling. Adamant was fantastic and Wicked Hearts is exactly what I expect from a zone centered on Orlesean politics. The first act of the game (pre-Skyhold) moves really well too, and I like there are two completely divergent quest lines there. I would have preferred if a few of the optional zones had more of a direct narrative tie-in, but YMMV.
As for the fetch quest/filler that bothers so many people, most of it can be avoided. In some ways this makes the game more fun because you don't over-level the main quest. If your struggling to finish, and actually want to finish, I recommend avoiding all the shards, tapestries, landmarks, and note-based quests. You don't need all those experience points to finish the game.
I only recently started playing again. I have three character and only my first one since launch has finished the game. The other two aren't even close. Honestly, I come back for the gameplay and the characters.
The only way I can play this game is by ignoring the side quests. Main story isn't that long so twas pretty easy to get my 8 playthroughs. Sera is what keeps me coming back. And the male British voice.
