I'm tired of feeling like my party and I are weak as hell.

I've been playing on hard mode from the start, I'll get that mentioned right out of the gate. Anyway, I've now officially just left Skyhold and gone to the Hissing Wastes as level 13... And it's bad. A single rift drops multiple pride demons and rage demons, and the pride demon alone is practically a boss fight every time who can kill other members of the party in seconds if I don't kite it and it takes about 10 minutes to kill it even when hitting it with everything we have. Everyone is fragile, including me despite being a knight enchanter. I can't even fight in melee against the pride demons, I do so little damage that I don't even get enough barrier from my strikes to even protect me. A single rift drains every last healing potion the group brings with them, and I still

I've now went and bought that super expensive staff schematic at the emporium that literally doubled my attack power from about 55 to 110. Varric's Bianca upgrades have got her up to 105 damage, so I'm using that as a baseline for what kind of attack power everyone should have. So now I'm going to have to buy a lot more schematics that cost a ludicrous amount and make a new weapon for nearly everyone in the party.

Where are all these awesome "guard on hit" and "barrier on hit" everyone is always talking about on here? I've yet to find a single resource or material that gives that attribute, and it would help a lot. It seems like my equipment is just constantly terrible, which might change now that I'm about to make weapons with at least decent attack power for once.

And I just found out that hissing wastes are the highest level area in the game... Well that explains a lot. Still, I want some advice regardless. Should I be using a 105 damage staff, or will that kill the difficulty as soon as I go to easier areas?

The strongest guard on hit fade touched item comes from silverite (+5) commonly found in Emprise. Also in Emprise are snofluer's who can drop heal on hit fade touched mats. Which I find to be outstanding on rogues as they tend to hit with a high frequency.

Barrier on hit comes from the knight enchanter spec for mage classes.

you could level up a bit in crestwood or exalted plains though. Fade touched Obsidian also gives +3 guard on hit and I know it can be found in Crestwood, might also be obsidian deposits in the plains as well.

Forgive typos from phone.

Yeah, don't go to the Hissing Wastes at Level 13. Go to the Exalted Plains or the Emerald Graves.

I'm at Crestwood, and feeling powerful again. I switched back to my 55 damage staff, the 105 one I made did indeed make things way too easy for that area.

This. Hissing Wastes is the highest level area outside of the DLC. Of course you're going to get creamed if you go there at level 13 on a higher difficulty with crummy gear.

As for Guard on Hit

I just completed a few quests there for the first time yesterday, it is actually so much fun. I was level 22 there so you could imagine it wasn't that hard for me but lot's of interesting lore on the Dwarves and some information about the Venatori. In my first playthrough I never gave it the light of day, I just ran around then never went back. Now in my second playthrough I want to finish all the areas so I'm giving everything a chance. No regrets now! :)

The game really should tell you which area is for which character level - like it does with the main quests.

Don't know the recommended levels, but this order works for me: Hinterlands, Storm Coast, Fallow Mire, Forbidden Oasis, Crestwood, Western Approach, Exalted Plains, Emerald Graves, Emprise du Lion, Hissing Wastes. If you want to go to an area a bit early (for specialization quests, merchants or craftig materials), that isn't to much of a problem, once you reach higher levels

The recommended levels for each area can be found in many websites, such as this one.

It also doesn't help that anything and anyone has way more HP that you do.. I mean I'm halfway to sure a nug has more HP than my rogue does. It's most definately at the heart of the horrible chaving-away-health combat, which is such a one way street, considering my rogue would lose 2/5 of his health by one swing of a two handed sword.

The only time it feels like hits do something is when your overlevelled.

I discovered that the Hissing Wastes was aimed at high level players and i'm level 18 with a level 17/16 party and got my arse kicked. I would recommend investing in a lot of crafting and use Tier 3 materials with Tier 2 and 3 equipment to help you survive. I would recommend looking at 200 DPS equipment for your warriors and 100+ for your mages. Your rogues, it depends on your talents and armour. Sera, i've got at 150+ with Tier 3 crafted armour and she has a decent damage out put. Cole, i feel he is best if you assume direct control of him to take advantage of flanking and Varric has a reputation for being overpowered with an upgraded Bianca. Currently, she does 111 per hit but i need to find more schematics for her. Oh and use Consitition or health giving metals for your warriors.

Or, we could just leave and come back if the enemies are too strong.

We shouldn't need our hands held.

There is a design issue, though, and that may be lack of experience in designing open worlds?  Some enemies do level up with you, but loot never seems to, which is a source of frustration.  Gear level is all over the place.  I routinely get some Level-6 gear when just starting a game, and I've gotten Level-18 gear when at Level 10.  Then later, I'll get some nifty-looking purples that are hopelessly underleveled.

If gear is going to be leveled independently of the player characters, then there needs to be more thought put into it.  Yes, I know crafting is the way to go, and that's all I rely on after the game opens up.  Why put any development effort into purples at all, then?

Someone brought up health.  Sometimes the obvious stat really is the best one.  More health is akin to greater defenses and resistances across the board.  (E.g., twice the health = 50% better defenses, resistances and armor.)  You can add ridiculous amounts of health with crafting, and certain crafting materials will allow all classes to wear any armor (not all races, though).  If survivability is an issue, look into it.

Caveat:  Barrier and guard don't figure into this, unless they're tied to health.  I don't think they are.  Oh, and potions still give a fixed amount of health, so they need to be upgraded.

I didn't think that enemies that were just one level above were that big a deal, though I only play on Normal not Nightmare.

Dude, if you get into one area and get your ass handed to you, leave and level up then go back there. Basic RPG rule.

Actually, the issue of this game is that you outlevel enemies too quickly. You can't spent too much time in one area otherwise half the game is ruined for you. So I believe you are rushing your gameplay.

There really isn't much to it that hasn't been mentioned above, I'm afraid. The combat in DAI isn't deep nor does it require much in the way of strategy - you either overpower an enemy or you don't.

I've only ever played the game on Nightmare, so I don't have any knowledge when it comes to the lower difficulties, however I've noticed that bar mages using a few CC spells, strategy just doesn't seem to be a major factor in the combat of this game.

In Nightmare, if the enemies overpower you, you may be able to survive the encounter with timed usage of Barrier and Health Potions, but by the time the encounter is over most of your potion stock will be depleted and you'll need to revisit a camp. Even levelling up just once or twice can completely change the tide of a battle - something I find very basic from a developer standpoint and I'm actually disappointed by. It's the same reason that crafting in DAI is so overpowered - a small amount of stat points hold a large (too much) amount of oomph.

Since utilising crafting seriously (which on my first playthrough was around hitting Skyhold) I've steamrolled anything and everything in my path. I completed all side areas (including Emprise du Lion and Hissing Wastes) before tackling "Here Lies the Abyss" and "Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts" and was sitting at level 21/22 by the time I done those quests. So, as of now, I pretty much have just the main storyline to complete and a couple of dragons and I am far too overlevelled.

I'm going to download Jaws of Hakkon this evening in the hopes it lives up to it's infamy and it is indeed harder than everything presented by the game so far. Good god, I hope it is.

tl;dr: Utilise crafting, a couple of CC spells on your mage(s) and gain a couple of levels. You'll soon be tearing Hissing Wastes apart.

Guys, I really don't need help anymore. I can now demolish the hissing waste rifts with little effort. My problem was going to a level 22 area at level 13.

Go to the hissing waste NOW. Look for the shop and get to the caves. I just found a battlemage schematic. You can also buy the stuff you need at the black emporium.

My equipment is already mastercrafted with excellent stats, with schematics bought from the emporium. I'm fine, have been for a long while now.

Let me see if I understand this ...  The OP is complaining about the game being too hard while playing on the hard difficulty? Is that right? Or am I missing something?

He wasn't complaining, he was asking for tips on what he could do to feel like he's under-leveled in an area. He didn't know the area was Level 22, and he was only at level 14 at most.
