Archer or DW Rogue?

Archer obviously if you prefer ranged combat.
They both work well but dw is not quite as awesome as in previous da games. Da2 dw rogues were op. In dai they are very good but not op: soloing the most difficult fight will require more skillz. In general archers in comparison to dw rogue have been buffed in dai.
So assassin dw: always in stealth and takes enemies one by one from behind, kill move to next target playstyle (methodical)
Assassin archer: sniper playstyle
Tempest dw: rogue tank playstyle (more chaotic combat but continuous damage)
Tempest archer: legolas
Artificer dw: have not tried not recommended for first time as their focus ability not good with daggers can work though but is clunky.
Artificer archer: very good similar to Tempest in play style but "less flashy" (no bullet time) and elemental mines while flashy are practically less useful than bullet time.

I always loved playing DW in the previous games and even DAI. I think really, you just have to ask yourself what you prefer - ranged combat or sneaky sneak, stabby stab.
I won't go over specs too much since I think ottffsse covered it pretty well. I will say though, for whatever reason, I found it much easier to craft really good daggers than really good bows. I also think for a first play through, DW is much easier. Transitioning from DAO and DA2 I found the combat in DAI clunky that I had to switch from Nightmare to Normal just so I could get used to it. The cinematics for DW are also much nicer, but I suppose that is pretty subjective.

Why choose? Try both. Easy enough to re-spec from bow to daggers. Or vice-versa.

Archer for me seems like that safer specially on higher difficulties and and quite easily leave it in the hands of the ai when needed, DW for me was more interesting to play but had a steep learning curve and i cant trust the ai to make use of it on it own without content supervision.

The only problem is you can't respec specializations there you have to choose or play one of the npcs in the party to sort of get the experience of playing an assassin rather than a tempest archer if you respec Cole to use bows. Sera as tempest archer and Varric as artificer archer (default) are both quite solid.
Agreed. Though OP can make a save before choosing specializations and then give each a try. There's no unanimity on which is the 'best'.
I've done all the rogue builds both archer and DW (except for DW artificer)- at least for a few levels. For my money- DW Assassin is the most fun.

I have tried the DW Atificer, and it's pretty fun. The Sabotage tree offers two ranged attacks (Hook and Tackle and Throwing Knives), so I was able to get some licks in from a distance, close in, make some cuts, and get back into stealth before the foe can counter. Very fun experience. Also I felt like Batman a little.

My DW artificer uses evade and flank attack as her main movement abilities. I don't use hook and tackle on her at the moment (level 21). I am just starting to solo the DLC with her. She needs a new set of masterworks and more cold resistance to tackle it at the moment. My first rift experience in Haakon went poorly with her main questline equipment.

Yeah- that first rift in the Frostback Basin is quite a shocker- coming from the end of the rest of the game where you are simply overpowering. My entire party died and I was down to about an ounce of health before I finished off the floaty ice shooting demon. On the plus side- those rifts- if you can manage to get them closed- are a great place to farm Veil Quartz.

I was set up pretty offensively and need more defense for the DLC. I had hidden blades 4 and hidden blades 5 on my weapons and heal on hit on my armor. I will likely switch to iron fortress on hit, guard on hit and keep hidden blades 5.

I haven't used Evade. Thought about adding it, but that means getting rid/replacing something. My DW rogue is an Artificer. Haven't tried Jaws of Hakkon yet, but good to know to stock up on cold resistance.
I will say this: Hook and Tackle is good for catching up to Despair demons. I hate those things and the way they fly away after you hit them.

That is a good point. Evade doesn't go far enough, I end up using evade then flank attack to get Despair demons. This is on my DW Artificer as well. I also use Spinning Blades. With my crit rate I can almost chain Spinning Blades. If there are multiple targets or both hidden blades procs then I can. Spinning Blades is also nice with the single target daggers as I hit multiples with Spinning Blades using the Coiled Strike schematic single target blades

Spinning Blades is good. I need to use it more. I'm trying to get multiple hits to up my critical attacks. I really want to build a better DW rogue for hard difficulty.

Can't decide.
So don't decide. Play whatever you bakes your brownies at the time and respec later when you get bored. That's what's so great. I never had a complete playthrough where I stuck with a single style the whole game. I'd swap specializations if the game would let me!

This. I should be able to do that at the Black Emporium. Keep my ability points and re-spec to a different specialization.

Really depends, tbh. Wouldn't recommend being DW on Nightmare for one.
Also, what party members do you use? Unless you use Cole at all (and aren't playing on Nightmare), I'd say Dual-Wield. Sera and Varric work out pretty well as archers, so if you want a ranged non-magic user, stick with one of them. Tbh, the skills in the DW tree are more interesting imo, but that's personal preferance. But, if you often have two warriors in your party with you, being an archer would probably work out better (especially on Hard or Nightmare, although DAI's "Hard" isn't as difficult as Origins', imo). Aiming for a balanced party is a good idea, so having two range attackers (or three) would probably be a good idea.

I like to keep it stabby. Only issue with the DW assassin is you basically have to control the character at all times. It's like how Cole seems to think he's a tank - your character can't stay in stealth all the time and the AI isn't good enough to compensate, so aside from spamming Stealth and Flank Attack, it basically has you charging in blindly.
Party-wise, I tend to travel with two sword-and-board tanks and a mage. You can also swap out one of the tanks for an archer or another mage, as long as one of the mages is geared towards support and the other towards damage.

there is no good DW character in your party, you have capable warriors who the a.i can handle and you can control Vivienne for knight enchanter, however its a good learning curve, you get the best armors and can customize two daggers for even more power, level 15 onwards you are a god amongst men
highly recommend
