Rachni all the way. Despite the narrative railroading, and the obvious slant to place human-like alien lives as worth more than the inhuman ones they are arguably the most powerful species in the known galaxy.

• Quick breeding and combat capable forces in a matter of a few weeks.

• Soldiers that come 'pre-equipped' with their own weapons and armor on par with modern technologies.

• Extremely organized societal structure; no petty squabbling for political power here.

• Natural engineers, quite adept at manipulating and reverse engineering advanced technologies.

• Able to survive, and thrive in extreme environments without protection.

• A communication network that exists outside of the Relay network, is instantaneous, and is naturally occurring in all members of the species.

• A species that has existed longer than the Prothean empire, perhaps going back for several cycles.

• Complete genetic memories of previous generations

• Capable of both asexual and sexual reproduction; one Queen is all that is needed to restart the species

and most importantly

• Immunity or extremely high resistance to Reaper indoctrination.

That's just the aspects of their biology and social structure though, in terms of their relations to the galaxy at large in the trilogy, the Rachni are:

• The only species to realize the true extent of the Reaper threat and actually prepare for it (off screen writers' fiat notwithstanding)

• The only species to provide complete support for Shepard and the galaxy free of strings and conditional arrangements (looking at you Krogan).

Are any rachni sentient aside from the queen? Can any rachni reproduce aside from the queen? What are the rachni without the queen?

Are any rachni sentient aside from the queen?

Well, we don't really know the extent of the the Drones and Soldiers sentience, but we do know that the Queen mentions that singing to them helps them develop; as evidenced by the Rachni driven insane on Peak 15; so there is some form of social interaction taking place. Typically, it is only the more developed species that require such interaction in order to function properly, so there is some indication that the lower castes of Rachni have a degree of sentience.

Can any rachni reproduce aside from the queen?

From what we are shown, it doesn't appear so. But that doesn't mean that the Rachni don't posses a biological mechanic that will see a worker or drone undergo a metamorphosis to become a queen should a colony find itself without one; not unlike certain insect species on Earth. Even if we say that the Rachni are entirely dependent on the Queen though; that their species is doomed to extinction should the sole egg layers die off; they are still better off than the other species in the galaxy.

Yes the reliance on the Queen is a weakness, but it is also a strength in more ways than one. If you have one Rachni Queen, she can lay the eggs necessary to start up a colony and then breed with her own Brood Warriors for genetic diversity. Humanity can't do that, you would need a sizable population to keep the species alive; even the Asari will need at least one member of another species to breed with. The Rachni, as depicted in ME 1 -3, can literally start with a single member of their species and, without the need of outside assistance, have everything they need to jump start their race again.

What are the rachni without the queen?

You have the individual Rachni's intelligence to consider. Despite their insanity inducing separation from the Queen in ME 1, the secluded Drones and Soldiers managed to not only escape confinement from the Peak 15 scientists; as well as resident human supremacist group Cerberus; but they also managed to establish several colonies on planets with extremely different environmental conditions. They even engaged in a guerrilla war with Alliance troops on one of said planets, troops equipped with modern weapons and armor and they very nearly succeeded before Shepard and Co intervened. Even if the lower casts aren't as individually 'quirky' as something like humanity they still seem to be capable of handling themselves with other intelligent races.

The rachni disgust me.

The only one capable of communication with other species is the queen and she can only do so through a mind controlled slave or a corpse.

Despicable.

The rachni may be powerful but they are too monstrous and dangerous to be allowed into galactic society.

I don't see how any other species can benefit from the existence of the rachni, but I do see how they can be threatened by it and personally I believe that the rachni should be exterminated.

You make us sing amber notes of sadness  :( But seriously, to each their own. I found the Rachni to be one of the very few 'alien' aliens in the setting, and I would have loved to learn more about them and interact with them more.

They could bring a lot to the other races of the galaxy in terms of engineering prowess, and one one can't discount their propensity for survival in extreme environments. Rachni allies could establish a solid foundation for a colony on a harsh world with no need for environmental suits, or specialized living quarters (for example). Plus rapidly bred, combat capable soldiers in a mater of a few weeks vs. years compared to other species like the Krogan.

Speaking of the Krogan, I would trust the Rachni far more than that race of (potential) walking roid rages. Out of the two, the Krogan have arguably done more damage to the galaxy at large, and they are the most belligerent when it comes to working well with other species.

  • Yes, the Rachni Wars were devastating, but the codex does mention that after the conflict the Council races were able to reclaim lost worlds, and even resettle former Rachni ones (though they were typically too harsh for the Asari or Salarians). The Krogan, on the other hand, re-directed three asteroids (an act that the Batarians, a race commonly depicted as being little better than the Reapers, attempted only once in the Bring Down the Sky DLC) on a species that they had no previous quarrel with. Three garden worlds, rendered completely uninhabitable.

  • The Krogan have also demonstrated a complete immaturity when it comes to managing their planets. Tuchunka? Practically destroyed by self inflicted nuclear holocaust, and is only remotely livable thanks to the efforts of the Salarians and the Shroud. Worlds awarded for Krogan efforts in the Rachni wars? Environmental disasters. Not only are they lousy caretakers of their own planet, but they completely devastated others. We don't know much about the state of the Rachni's worlds, but we do know that their home world of Suen had harsh surface conditions. Despite this, the Rachni built impressive spires with their innate talents at engineering, building techniques that made developing space travel easier when they began to develop such technologies, and that they didn't almost kill them selves off with infighting.

  • In terms of each species' interaction with the rest of the galaxy in the trilogy, the Rachni are at least big enough to admit that they did great harm in their attack on Citadel space. The Krogan, by and large, don't. And even the mutant 'reasonable' Krogan, Wrex won't even try to see the other's side of why the Genophage was deployed, or acknowledge Krogan wrongdoing. Nope, its all about how evil the Genophage is, and how racist the rest of the galaxy is. It's funny, when bringing Wrex to Noveria in ME 1 he argues that the Rachni are monsters and should be killed off because of the damage they caused and could do in the future, but is all for curing the Genophage despite the damage that the Krogan did and could do in the future. Wrex is also woefully biased in his view on galactic events, according to him: "We were tools for the Council once, and to thank us for wiping out the Rachni they neutered us all." That's not why the Salarians/Turians deployed the Genophage Wrex, but keep nursing your grudges and refuse to see your species at fault for any wrongdoing.  <_<

  • When preparing for the arrival of the Reapers, the Rachni devote their entire species to building up forces to combat them (off screen writer's fiat notwithstanding). All the Queen asks is that Shepard doesn't kill her, even after imprisonment by the Reapers for up to six months she immediately sets off to help the galaxy when Shepard frees her (crappy payoff to the Rachni choice notwithstanding). The Krogan on the other hand, are only willing to help if Shepard and the rest of the galaxy puts their war with the Reapers on hold so that the Genophage can be cured. Despite all of his assertions to the contrary, Wrex doesn't have his people jump to the aid of Shepard when he/she asks for it, nope he would rather hold the galaxy hostage. Even if the player decides to leave the Queen to die in ME 3, she understands and accepts the danger that she could pose. Wrex on the other hand, is willing to send the Krogan to war against the Alliance, despite the whole Reaper invasion going on, if Shepard decides to not help him.

Out of those two species, I trust the Rachni.

The difference between the two is that Wrex and his people actually need assistance in various areas and when he had bargaining power he used it.

The rachni don't. Once the queen is free she's good to go.

I'm not so sure that the rachni are good engineers or whatever else. Seems to me that they create structures and such just like insects do. Pure instinct. They're not actually sitting down trying to figure anything out. The rachni are like super space wasps in my eyes. If I were on a rachni ship, would I be able to pilot it if given the proper training, or do I have to have some aspect of rachni physiology in order to plug in or something? The queen probably commands the ship like she commands her slaves. In other words, rachni "tech" probably only works for rachni.

Whatever.

The krogan as a species has done many terrible things but at least every krogan is an individual with their own mind and free to think and act as they please. They can choose to fight or not to fight. If one of them decided to act up, they can be put down relatively easily compared to a queen who you would have to wage a large scale war against. Her slaves have no say.

Turians are my favorite. In my first play-through I was a bit URGH about all the aliens, until I got to know them. And overall I think Turiens are just awesome. They look pretty badass. And I'm a lizard pet owner...and they kind of look like lizard men?

Suffice to say my current Shep is going to romance Garrus - first play through I staid faithful to kaidan (sorry he can stay on virmire this time)

One of my other favorite species would have to be the Hanar; and no, not the the dumb meme they became in ME 3 *looks at Blasto* <_< .

Their culture of extreme politeness and the duality of their face and soul names always fascinated me. Encountering them in the first game, and then learning more about them through codex info and second hand sources in ME 2 really painted a picture of a race that was content to let the rest of the galaxy assume that they were helpless "big stupid jellyfish" when in reality they were more capable than anyone gives them credit for. For example, we have hardened mercenary Zaeed almost strangled to death by a Hanar, and who do you think trains the Drell as assassins?

Speaking of the Drell, where was the rest of the galaxy when Rakhana was dying? There is no mention of Asari, Salarian, or Turian relief efforts, and yet the Hanar's role is pretty much ignored and the species themselves are reduced to a joke status in the third game.

It is weird that none of the other species pitched in.

Was it ever said when the Hanar made first contact with the Council? If not I'd just assume the Hanar made contact with and rescued the Drell before they had made first contact with any of the Citadel species.

To quote someone I really like: "Character matters, not race or gender."

So, I value all the races. They all represent what makes me love this universe.

But I would go with turians, if I were to be forced to answer. Just because of my portrait.

Quarians and Protheans(i wanted to play as them both), even Protheans like Qunarians more than all other races and they do not involve in their evolution or give them technoly as with Asari

and

Batharians, Vorcha, Turians, Salarians, Rachni, Drells, Krogans, Volus

not a fan of hanars(i find that it is stupid that they not even have eyes but somehow can travel in space, read and use many technologies) and elcors

In ME universe i never like and hate only Asari. Humans and geths(but they are not a race and just programed machines)

I'd go with Asari or Drell. The natural biotic abilities along with being able to live upwards of 1000 years seems fun. The be a first hand witness to the rise and fall of civilizations and evolution of technologies and space travel would be too enticing of an offer to turn down. And the Drell well, they just have always seemed cool to me.

Most races have their qualities, but I'd say asari as the game seems to have elaborated most on them lore-wise compared to the other races. I also found that Nos Astra was the most aesthetically pleasing location.

I love the Quarians and the Geth. Both are examples of complicated, unique and well-thought-out cultures that aren't just the gimmicky aliens and crush-kill-destroy robots they seem at first. I cheated somewhat by looking up how to achieve peace between them in ME3, because I couldn't choose between the two.

I think captain Gavorn compared them to insects or something like that - you know, fast breeding, can live anywhere, can adapt anywhere. And sure, devs didn't even try to make them different from goblins. ;)
