Kthx.

Kthx.
I would take Masterworks
Definitely Shield of the Dragon.
Range defense is about everything in this game, magic defense is all but useless and you can easily manage melee defense by not being hit or use an ability like Shield Wall.
Shield of the Anointed would be my second pick. The melee defense can be worthwhile if you have nothing else.
Masterwork Orlesian Shield would be my dead last pick. 4 CON is the equivalent of 20 HP and 2% melee defense. The +20 max Guard is a drop of water in the ocean, if it even is worthy of that...

Is +20 guard +20% guard? If it is...and you are running the templar with 1k hp, and the 2 guard perks, that is a 200hp boost every time you use unbowed. Unless my math is wrong....I was assuming a +20% to equal 95% guard...it could be +20% to the 750hp of guard, which would be 900hp instead of 950hp.
Either way, +150 to +200, if I'm understanding +max guard correctly.

That's where you're wrong. Worst thing is, you're wrong on both accounts...
+20 Guard is only 20 Guard as 20 HP. It's ridiculous...
Not only that, but both Bulwark + Untouchable Defense are pretty poor passives. You'd think that both 25% maximum Guard with the Warrior original 25% Guard would give you 75% of your HP, but you'd be wrong there too. You see, the 25% from Bulwark and Untouchable Defense are 25% of the 25% original Guard, which means, they are equivalent to 6.25% in reality.
With 1000 HP, you would get 250 Guard from the original 25%, and a big 125 Guard from both passives combined for a grand total of 375 Guard. It's not even enough to withstand an arrow in your back. It's useless no matter how you look at it.
With 750 HP, you get 187.5 + 46.875 + 46.875 = 281.25 Guard. Almost 100 Guard less than for 1000 HP.
Now imagine level 1 Legionnaire with no promotions that start at 500 HP...
Of course, if you're playing on Routine or Threatening, you could say it has some utility, but seeing what Barrier can be and how easy it is to keep it up compared to Guard, it's hard to say Guard can be anything but useless...
Guard buff isssss coming
I just hope they change those old items into something more useful.
Agreed, except that turn the bolt with any shield will already put you at the 80% cap though for ranged defense from the front. So imo it really comes down to whether you are better at preventing archers from flanking you or at dodging/blocking melee.Definitely Shield of the Dragon.

The best shield I believe is the Dwarven proving shield (+5% damage per nearby enemy), all the others are roughly equal, with slight variances in their tiny defense boosts.
Even the low level damage increasing shields are far better than any of the defensive shields, which is a rather strange state of affairs.

Nah. Shield of the emperor is the best, assuming you have the caliban. The damage bonus per nearby enemy doesn't stack, so the bonus on the caliban is wasted if you use the proving shield.

But....but......

1. Wow, that sucks.
2. Guard rocks on the templar...I'm pretty much invincible. Granted, lots of promotions, but she is beefy now.

Well. . .considering that's the buy section of a singleplayer merchant, it looks like you don't either.
You win this round Brogan, .......sleep with one eye open however.....
