So it is down to 4 teams, US, Japan, Germany and England.
I'm rooting for Japan now that Canada has been ousted. Japan just plays a great brand of football. They seem to know exactly what they are doing and are great on set pieces. They are certainly outclassed size wise by all remaining teams though.
Canadas loss to England was no surprise to me. It amazes me just how casual not only Canada but a lot of these teams behave with the ball in their own end and it cost Canada dearly. Defender, especially the central one diddling around with the ball, trips over her own feet, coughs up the ball and in England goes to score.
I'm torn between Germany and Japan. Germany is a veritable juggernaut in women football and that isn't just because they have a world class team, but first and foremost because Germany has put so much effort into building up women football over time. It's still criminally overshadowed by men's football, even in Germany (despite the ladies frequently winning big).
Japan on the other hand just started reaping the fruits of a comparingly ambitious women's football program and it really shows how giving their sport some attention and proper funding can result in huge returns.
That is imho the biggest hurdle to global success for women football, there are only a handful teams that play on a highly competitive level, as was showcased during this World Cup, for example the match Germany vs Ivory Coast. No disrespect to the african ladies, they fought hard, but they simply weren't good enough yet to match up against a team like Germany. And such onesided matches is what gives random onlookers the impression that the whole women's football is still amateurs punting the ball around.
