I guess because it's football. Also we are all nerds here, so sports doesn't interest us much.

Third minute in the game Germany leads with 1-0,

And a nutshot already. Gee ...

Nice save from the Ivory Coast goalie.

Ivory Coast goalie is her team's player with most ball possession, heh! ... aaaand 2-0 as I wrote it.

3-0. And such a simple goal, dayum.

Scratch that, 4-0.

Ivory Coast is simply hilariously outmatched, but kudos, they keep fighting, those counters are dangerous when they happen!

5-0.

HOW CAN YOU NOT MAKE THAT GOAL????????

And 6-0.

7-0.

8-0. Stahp Germany, they're already dead, stahp!

9-0. Mercy-Rule, plz.

Ivory Coast, y u no make dat goal?

10-0 ...

So it is down to 4 teams, US, Japan, Germany and England.

I'm rooting for Japan now that Canada has been ousted.  Japan just plays a great brand of football.  They seem to know exactly what they are doing and are great on set pieces.  They are certainly outclassed size wise by all remaining teams though.

Canadas loss to England was no surprise to me.  It amazes me just how casual not only Canada but a lot of these teams behave with the ball in their own end and it cost Canada dearly.  Defender, especially the central one diddling around with the ball, trips over her own feet, coughs up the ball and in England goes to score.

I'm torn between Germany and Japan. Germany is a veritable juggernaut in women football and that isn't just because they have a world class team, but first and foremost because Germany has put so much effort into building up women football over time. It's still criminally overshadowed by men's football, even in Germany (despite the ladies frequently winning big).

Japan on the other hand just started reaping the fruits of a comparingly ambitious women's football program and it really shows how giving their sport some attention and proper funding can result in huge returns.

That is imho the biggest hurdle to global success for women football, there are only a handful teams that play on a highly competitive level, as was showcased during this World Cup, for example the match Germany vs Ivory Coast. No disrespect to the african ladies, they fought hard, but they simply weren't good enough yet to match up against a team like Germany. And such onesided matches is what gives random onlookers the impression that the whole women's football is still amateurs punting the ball around.

That's because Blatter (and a good number of other high ranked FIFA officials) are a patriarchic, oppressive, misogynistic shitlords who should have their priviliges checked ... :police:

I don't worry about the lop sided games at all to be honest, happens in mens football as well in the world cup.  France actually deserved to be in the final 4 if you ask me on their play.

As an aside, one really should never blame goalies in penalty kicks but some pretty terrible efforts in the one shoot out.

This whole thing confuses me. I mean, seriously, England are doing reasonable well at a sport? Something is horribly wrong with women's football if that can happen....

Yeah thats what I mean.

I guess the big thing this year was the womens cup was going to be played on turf in which the men would never be subjected to. Kinda messed up. FIFA makes the NFL look like they have their **** together lol

To be fair, a men's Germany v. Ivory Coast would play out the same.  Ivory Coast is certainly one of the best African teams around, but Didier is getting old and you can't build a team on the Toures.  Besides the German men's team is unstoppable right now, they make every match look one-sided.

And this turf thing is pretty bushleague, but I'm not letting it detract from the enjoyment.  It's good for Japan's game, you know.

Not so good for Sydney's legs though

Spoiler

Random pice of Trivia. back in thr 50s to 60s womens football was verry popular but the FA deemed it "Too popular." and banned it... or something.

The turf problem is a difficult one.  Both logistics and cost wise.  FIFA would have to pony up the funds to have grass for all the games and all the maintenance that goes along with it because host countries might very well pass if they are asked to provide it.
