So I've run into a bit of trouble. I'm playing a Qunari 2H Champion, I'm at level 26 or 27, held a couple ability points in reserve so I could upgrade the new inquisitor ability, and I'm on nightmare, trying to get the achievement.

So I get the fancy new ability, upgrade it so it does counter damage and cools down faster, and all the little Hakkonites come to play. So I save, and like a moron I override the save I made BEFORE I came to the island.

I died around 9(ish) times before I finally gave up, and had Sera stealth over to the boat. I mean, if I was a mage that new drop shield would be great, but even using Solas to attempt to CC them, and with lots of healing potions/grenades all fully upgraded, I die. Every time.

Is it just me, or has anyone else had to run away from these hateful little bastards? I did everything I could, I had REALLY nice equipment thanks to the Cradle of Sulevin and a few other things, set up party behaviors, used tac cam the best I could, but nope. They just wait until my shield is down and pelt me with arrows that SOMEHOW FREEZE ME. I mean come on, if they get freezing arrows I should be able to give some to Sera too.

It's tough. And I only went through dlc on nightmare with a mage necro and sera so I don't know the best thing to do as a warrior. But one skill which a must I think is upgraded war horn. It will deal moderate damage in a large aoe and give you guard if you have guard on hit but most importantly will debuff the enemies by sundering their armour, breaking their guard and most importantly! sending them into panic. Panicked enemies can't launch arrows. Cycle that and aegis of the Rift. Use the house for shelter. Have solas use pull, fire mine and wall of fire. Once a lot of the archers are near the house and about to pincushion you drop a mark of the Rift on them. Oh and at that lvl solas should also have static cage once that is dropped have sera use flask of fire and go crazy with leaping explosive shots.

I also found controlling sera useful as then I could use flasks effectively and should anyone go down go into flask of lighting and revive them. Staying close together in the house helps for that.

Do you have enough Focus for a single mark of the rift? It makes things a lot easier. The basic tactic is to pull them all up to the path near the house while staying away, wait for them to come (maybe stand away under the protection of your new skill for a bit) then when they're all bunched up together on the path next to the house, use your mark and all your AOE abilities on them. They have somewhere around 20k health, and even a tier 1 mark of the rift has a chance to outright kill anything it touches.

Knockdowns, fears, panicks, sleeps, freezes, staggers and whatnot are your best friends in Jaws of Hakkon on nightmare, since everything hits so hard. As a side effect of that damage burst and crowd control, Guard and Taunts are comparatively very weak, It's safe to just use Charging Bull as your guard generator and to rely on the knockdown to keep the enemy from hitting your squishies.

I am also a 2H champion trying to go through DLC in nightmare, and I go for a technically solo (I bring Sera and Solas but strip them off and set off the tactics in case there is a locking door or a ghost fire stuff, but they basically won't effect any fight at all ). This fight is difficult indeed, but not impossible. you need to take out the mage first, and asap (just use bomb, focus or whatever you have). then you should fall back to the cabin, you need to combine Walking Fortress and Aegis of Rift to block the arrows, and use grasping chain to catch enemies into the rift field, and take care of them one by one (To the Death is very helpful to max the damage output, and with upgrade it generate guard like crazy). if you lost the aegis and no Walking Fortress, just circle the cabin and use it as a cover, wait for those 2 abilities recharged, and do the above again. if you keep patient it should be able to make it.

Here is my video:

And I forget to upgrade the aegis to counter arrows, if you upgrade it things should be more easier.

That is a very nice video, well done.  I love the execution and the tactics used.

Very clever usage of walking fortress, and I loved how you lured the archers into the hut. Something tells me you were smart enough to use frost resistance armor as well, which was my biggest mistake.

I didn't even have enough focus on any of my party members for tier 1 abilities, but what I ended up doing was waiting at the other side of the island until the Hakkonite mage had separated himself from the group, coming up to investigate the hut. I took him out as fast as I could, and the others didn't have enough time to respond since they had bee spreading out over the island. Then, I used the rock cover to avoid the arrows as long as I could, trying to draw their warriors into closer range. When they got close enough I had Solas use Pull of the Abyss to gather them together, and the I used mighty blow, veil strike (Solas), charging bull, and pommel strike to keep them down while I hacked away at their health while I had the aegis up (with 2 upgrades). Then it was just a matter of using the other party members to distract them while I kept using the chain to get them up on the rocks. Just so long as I didn't face the majority of them at once, like I had been stupidly trying to do earlier (running down to try and use charging bull and whatnot while they were still grouped together).

My lesson from all this: traditional tactics from the main game DO NOT WORK on enemies from the Frostback Basin. You need to separate them and make good use of your surroundings. I'm so happy I reverted to my save right before that fight instead of just running away.

Although, I did really just use my basic dragon hunting tactics against Hakkon, it just took a little longer than normal, and I needed all but 2 of the healing mist grenades I brought with (I had like, 3 party members with a full stock of them, fully upgraded).

Very nice video. One question, how do you perform the greatsword swing cancel in the video? Thx

Actually I don't stack any cold resistance. The reason is the enemy in DLC will apply a debuff (Warth of Hakkon...I think) when they attack you, it will decrease your cold resistance, so even you have 80%, it will be gone really soon.

Anyway congratulation for passing there!

Wouldn't it just drop your cold resistance into the negative then? If it does, cold resistance would help to mitigate the debuff's affects by keeping from dropping as much. I just wish there was a way to keep them from freezing you.
