What i have learned from the last few pages of this thread. Cinematic storytelling sucks, Todd Howard is the biggest Hack in the gaming industry(what?) and Bethesda don't understand what Fallout is all about. I think that sums it up guys, we don't need this game.

Why having a voice-acted protagonist is breaking the mold from Fallout?
The original protagonist in F1 could have it, if only the resources were more. In fact, every time it was possible, with the main NPCs, they were voiced and well voiced indeed.

Because half of the lines in the entire game are, by default, protagonist lines.

If you make them text only, the amount of context and versatility that you can accomplish is exponentially higher than that which can be accomplished with a VA. Bioware said in an interview a few years back they couldn't make BG2 today, as it would require voice acting that would be beyond the budget for any game to withstand.

If today's current schemes can't make what other developers voted as the greatest game of all time, then what does that say about the current industry norm of voice acting and cinematics?

Except for the fact that it isn't, because text can still convey a lot of personality. To give people the blank slate that they desire, like in DA:O or New Vegas, the dialogue has to be exceedingly bland and neutral. And so in fact the dialogue itself doesn't really expand on what you can accomplish.

Very few games use text-only to their advantage. PS:T did, and it did it by essentially having huge blocks of pure text on abstract concepts.

POE is a new game that tries to do a lot with silent text... but it does it by straight up just adopting dialogue tones like in DA2 and Alpha Protocol. Sure, you have the option to hide those tones to try and pretend the text says something else, but people's mental fantasy aside, the actual text is drafted in a very narrow band.

All of this is to say that from a writting POV, a lack of VO doesn't have more freedom. It might get you more text (because it costs a lot less) but it won't get you more freedom.

Not to mention that BG2 winning "best game" isn't the same as winning "best dialogue system of all time". Skyrim is much beloved, but that doesn't prove that party-based combat is worse than non-party based combat.

And as critical of some of the things I've seen, I still can't f---in wait. I am replaying FO3 and FONV as we speak, trying to finish all the mods I have in the ready rack, and hopefully, will be done by November.

BTW, I just finished doing everything I needed to do in Rivet City, and paid particularly close attention to the Replicated Man quest, Harkness, Zimmer, Pinkerton, Pinkerton's computer, and Armitage (who I never realized was also an android--because I never killed him). Also found out that The Institute, Synth Retention Bureau, and Commonwealth are actual affiliations in FO3. Probably the smallest faction (Zimmer, Armitage and Harkness [former]) in the game, but an affiliation/ faction nonetheless.

I think it tees up android / Institute / railroad things fairly well. I'm wondering if they'll bring any of the Replicated Man players back, regardless of the fact that they can all be killed?

Seeing the Synth Assaulters and Synth Striders (totally creep looking) in the gameplay videos really have me pumped to crack open the Institute and see what awful things are going on behind that hi tech curtain.

Is the dog holding onto something there, or just standing up on its hind legs?

AFAIK, the dogs in FO3/NV pretty much always stayed up on all fours and never sat down, stood up, or slept, so that must be a new animation.

It's concept art, it's supposed to look epic.

I'm not even talking about a lack of dialogue ambiguity in this, though. I'm strictly talking word budget, text vs. voiced - the amount of lines and responses are exponentially larger (proof by the fact that BG2 had well over 200K lines of dialogue).

And BG2 is heralded because of its story, character interaction and huge variety of options to approach situations. That's all directly tied to the writing, which is directly tied to how versatile they could make the various responses and lines in the game.

I don't believe the ability to kill (or even not meet) characters in previous games would prevent them from bringing them into sequels. Look at Harold in FO2/3. Or Marcus in FO2/NV. The Fallout series has never been afraid to make past games' actions or choices canon in order to tell a good story.

That being said, I don't know if they would decide to bring back any of the previous characters or not. Dr. Zimmer seems like a likely candidate, but nothing about it seems to require him being there, either.

Figured as much. Although completely unnecessary to a story line, I just thought they might possibly use them to establish continuity with FO3, since you never hear Todd Howard even mention New Vegas. And FO4 obviously is more of a continuance of 3 than NV.

Doesn't someone from the BoS tell you in Broken Steel that Dr. Li has left and is heading for the Commonwealth? If there's anything to the Three Dog rumor, that might explain how he gets there too. I don't recall if he ever said anything about Dr. Li herself, but presumably he'd approve of her work and might get in touch with her through his connections to the Brotherhood.

Been trying to come up with songs that fit the time-period and that I'd like to listen to while wandering Boston. Came up with two so far xD

Or even Tandi in Fallout/Fallout 2 (and mentioned in New Vegas).

The entire town of Shady Sands and the NCR, for that matter.

Just read that TH and the FO4 Team will be there and have additional gameplay footage, but it will only be behind closed doors. Obviously Doom gameplay will be there, but that supposedly will be on Twitch.

As far as Quake is concerned...I used to be a total Quake nutjob, and many of us are hoping that the franchise will be violently defibrillated back to life. Quake had, and I supposed still has to some extent, a huge MP following. Mostly old timers.

I personally loved Quake 4, and thought Arena was pure MP goodness, but Quake 2 holds the top spot as my favorite shooter...ever...even if I couldn't look up and down. ;)

I love both of these songs, and they would fit right in. Problem is they were both released after the split. Lillipop in 1957/58 and Beyond the Sea in 1960.

Doesn't mean they couldn't add them though. Even in an alternate universe some things we know of in our universe would still happen in the FO universe. After all, Dean Martin, Bobby Darin, and the Chordettes existed in both.

Either way, I'd add these to my playlist as well.

I don't see a problem with songs from the 60's being in Fallout. I mean, Evils sucess blew during the late 50's and he clearly existed in the Fallout world, considering the Kings in New Vegas.

I could see Leonard Cohen's music or definitely Sinatra working for Fallout... in fact, that would be awesome. Someone fund that.

EDIT: I forgot that the latter is already in New Vegas already. So more of him anyway!
