Mass Effect 1 hardly was much of a RPG by way of game mechanics. It had character builds and level progression, yeah, but the overarching gameplay was a third-person perspective cover shooter. The only defining RPG quality was that the character itself was malleable, hence you roleplaying the character, but little actually transferred into the actual gameplay.
And I wouldn't say ME1 had much strategy either. Biotics + (anything but early game) Shotgun = GG, difficulty setting irrelevant.
Which is why ME should have been a top-down party based game, like it was originally conceived as. DA:O style mechanics instead of FPS. THAT would have made the series epic. Instead of being a watered down Gears clone.

I wouldn't necessarily say a top-down/isometric gameplay would be the best for ME. Imho it should be a realtime tactics game. You don't control the characters directly, but you issue commands that get executed based on character stats and environment. Think realtime XCom. Movement is based on fatigue (fitter characters have more movement) and each time a character moved to a new position there is a small delay proportional to fatigue until they can move again, weapon accuracy is based on weapon stats, character skills and cover, etc. pp.!

You do realize that most people would just find an game like that boring, right? Just look at GTA. It was considered an rather inconsequential series during the first two games, then GTA 3 came with third person mode and the series exploded. There is nothing epic about seeing a bunch dots running around from an aerial view.

Which is why ME1 and 2 outsold DA:O?

Well to be fair DA:O has the makings of a classic so it has staying power. You do have a point though.

A good game is a good game. Bioware had zero experience making anything FPS related - KOTOR being their only semi-close example - yet they went ahead and did it anyway. And it took them three games to get to an even serviceable FPS (at the expense of LOTS of RPG elements).Well to be fair DA:O has the makings of a classic so it has staying power. Can you imagine the course Bioware would have taken if DA:O was the format they adopted and polished for both series, rather than ME? They'd actually be making games I care about today.

Not if you include the Game of the Year Edition sales of DA:O. Only ME3 (and now allegedly DA:I) beats that.

And it truly was a great game. It brought me into the RPG fold. If that had been their formula, they wouldn't be competing in a deep and diluted pool of shooter/action games, against developers that do what they're trying to do, but far better.
But anyway....how about that FO4!?

I'd be tempted to try and compare DA series sales to the ME trilogy, but DA2 and DA:I are about as sequels DA:O as Sonic: Dark Brotherhood is to actual Sonic games.

Ok so by now most of us have probably watched the gameplay numerous times. I wanna discuss something real quick, see what you guys think.
So, assault rifles. At 0:20 the pc guns down two raiders with what looks to be an assault rifle, right? But then the crafted one looks completely different. Im curious whats up with that? Is it two different models, or is the base the same but just so heavily modified you can make them THAT different?
