So I watched one of the videos where they talk about how you can use materials you find in order to build structures of your own. Did they clarify at any point whether this is just something you can do for fun, or does it actually make a difference in terms of having a defensible "base" if a hostile faction attacks you?

Yes, you can and will be attacked by bandits and such, also if you build it up enough you can get traveling merchants to stop by.

I hope they don't use the dead wife and kid as a motivator through out the story. I doubt Bethesda has the writing chops to establish them well in the prologue so that you actually care about them. It could feel very forced, and reminiscent of that kid in ME3 that you were supposed to care about.

I think it might work better for someone who is married with a kid, because they can project their own emotions and empathize better with the PC. But I'm not married with a kid, thank ****** lord because I don't need that in my early twenties. I'm barely qualified to raise my dog.

The construction system is wholesomely optional.

If you don't build a house/settlement, there would be no reason to attack that particular area. Traders wouldn't come to the area if there was no reason to. I'll assume there is an internal mechanic that determines the 'value' of your settlement/house,  and once it reaches a certain point Raiders will take interest.

I imagine it's difficult to make someone care about a digital character regardless what game it is. Seems to be easier with animals though.

Well, I've cared about a number of digital characters, but they were generally characters with a personality and a purpose, both of which they've established over the course of at least a few hours of gameplay... Any time a game shoved a character at me and said 'this is your spouse, look how nice they are, you love them, right? now they die.' all I've felt was 'well, thank god'.

Yep. Most people need time to get to know the characters first.

That would be awesome, but I'm not holding my breath. However, it would explain why the character might be forced to fight them after all they aren't exactly the most welcoming.

I'm going to build a fortress city called the Closed Curtain. It shall be called that because no one will know what is on the inside except for those that live there. There are going to be so many traps and defenses that no one can enter or leave without my say so. My people will be safe and they will thrive, but it will cost them their freedom. Tis the only way to keep them safe from the raiders, Deathclaws, and other threats that roam the waste. They might hate me for it and that is fine for I am willing to shoulder the hate to keep a portion of Boston safe and alive.

Nah, I actually like the idea of having a family oriented character myself. I doubt that theme will carry over to the main story, but I can hope.

Yeah but im thinking its a faction thing afterall you see your Vault dweller ener a Vertibird and mount the gun so im assumeing its a BoS Piolet at the Helm.

There is alot of ways it could go. All 3 of you could make it into the vault and then you awake alone and your family is gone. You have to find them. Someone has taken them, the insitute. They pit you against the Brotherhood, if you want, or you can use the Brotherhood to go at the institute to get them back. There are so many possibilities. I am curious if they will actually kill them off in the beginning, seeing as you can customize both characters before continuing on with the one you want, i am gonna say they will survive.
