Going to use the default name. Since the game has autodialogue, it won't be my character anyway.

No it is Bethesda's character now. You are just a pawn in the system, playing their game. Beeing manipulated.

Wow some people in here really have strong ties to roleplaying. I love to roleplay, but it is to a certain degree. This background is no more set than any other in the Fallout universe, in my opinion. The only thing that makes it abit more grounded is the voice, and i will admit that it might be a bad choice. that beeing said i really like voiced PCs, i just don't like the dialogue tree.

Set background is ok. The game deciding what my character says is another thing.

Where exactly was the auto dialogue? All I saw were voiced dialogue options, which is you deciding what your character says.

Read something about it yesterday. Could be it was a link someone posted in this very thread. Or the E3 thread.

The PC was saying stuff without being told, that's auto dialog. FFS the PC and their spouse where talking while you create your character. The combat looks fun but the writing and player agency looks utterly horrible.

The PC was talking with their spouse during CC, that completely and utterly ruins creating a character. They also said hello to the robot butler without player output and don't get me started on mention stuff you're picking up. It's silly and immersion breaking.

There's still a difference between ambient sound (the guy asking beard or not during CC is ambient sound more than anything, or would you consider grunting in pain when shot auto dialogue?) and auto-dialogue.

Auto dialogue is when someone asks if you're fine, your dialogue option says "Yeah" and your character then goes on to talk about other stuff without more player input. I've soon none of that in the FO4 presentation.

And player agency being limited in a game's prologue is hardly something new.

... what?

Mkay, I'll stop. Whatever form of immersion and or player agency you think about must be completely different from what I'm thinking.

You bare basing this 5 - 10 minutes of footage. The game will be 100 hours long or more if you do everything. We just don't know yet.

Well, eff, that's true, innit? The only major gameplay aspect I wanted to improve in Fallout was combat, so that's good, but the rest was already pretty much perfect to me... I did not want any changes there.

Still hoping all this will turn out to be not what it seems to be atm.

Well, you can shoot him like, five minutes later during the escape.

The spouse and PC HAD a conversation. That is auto dialog. It's bad enough I'm now forced to start out married to someone, now I have the protag talking without my say so. It is complete garbage, this is not Fallout. This is Todd continuing to show how little he knows about the series, and if the story they really want to tell is this cliche and cringeworthy with more family crap, then I'll be happy to just ignore it and have fun in the world because I can clearly see I'm not going to have a FO1/2/NV experience here at all.

Or maybe you're the one with poor taste. Even I would say that being married by default wouldn't be my first choice, but it's certanly not an deal breaker for me.

You've seen what of the story? The prologue, an intro with some interaction, meant to make it MORE immersive than just plopping out a vagina and looking at a computer screen to determine how you look like. So you get a backstory, one which might actually be fake if the speculation about you being an android much like A3-21 is correct, and if you don't like the backstory well okay. You don't have to. But you've seen nothing else about the game's story. You have no idea how the game will handle said backstory, how important it would be, if it's getting subverted lateron or if the game world will even reference it past the game's intro.

Calm down, if you kneejerked any harder, you'd be making backflips!

If you don't like what you've seen so far, then don't buy the game at launch, wait for some let's plays and look if what you see keeps disappointing you. If yes, don't buy the game and be happy. If no, buy the game, cringe yourself through the start and possibly have fun with the rest of the game.

While I agree there's no point in declaring the franchise ruined forever before the game even launches, I don't think too many people are being unreasonable here? This is an open space to discuss the game we care about in, and voicing concerns is just as valid as stating your excitement at this point. We don't know much about it yet so we talk about what we know, stating our preferences. Why jump down each other's throats over it?

I get what House is saying, auto-dialogue is a nasty thing for RPG's.  I hate the idea that the protagonist is voiced as well, but I'll grin my teeth and bare it. That said, it isn't fair to call his taste poor, he doesn't like it and therefore doesn't find the game worthy of his time or the Fallout franchise, that is fine. It's his money and his time, he is allowed to form his own opinion of it based upon what he has seen. I understand Houses points.

Calling something others might enjoy "garbage" doesn't really earn House any tolerance points. If he wants me or others to respect his opinion, maybe he should be a little more mindful of what he says.
