I'll craft the character depending on how are the mechanics structured. For instance, building a character with the same style you did in F1 and F2, in F3 or FNV, could mean you were probably going to become a corpse after a while. The reversal, using F3-FNV as copycats, on F1 and F2, simply doesn't let you advance through the first screen.

My character won't be all that remarkable first time through. I'll leverage the vet backstory, and probably self-insert, for all its worth on the first play through.

He'll be an ex-grunt with a Small Guns and Explosives focus, but is a solid Repairman, because it was his pastime right alongside his baseball addiction; high ST, high LCK and semi-Intelligent...but has a bad habit of picking locks, stealing what he needs, and using baseball bats and brass knuckles on deserving @$$holes, as a result of his early days of being raised on the street.

He'll be a bit of a thug, because he's a survivor, but sort of the dark knight due to his devotion in finding his family (if that is the main story line...) or at least to their memory. He'll want to do the right thing, but will fail probably half the time, because he'll fall on the selfish side (Neutral to Moderate Karma).

Not a saint; not a total @$$..

In short, the first character I'll be playing is the one I normally start FO with, and be what I consider my "canon" character for FO4.

I really hope we have M-1s, M-14's, Thompsons, BARs and 1911's in-game without mods. As base guns go, they fit in extraordinarily well in the FO universe.

Bombshell armor? I don't remember that.

At this point, I can't really tell what my character will be like. For instance, we don't even know how the transition from Old to New World will occur.

Is it something peaceful or have we seen the horrors of the Apocalypse before we leave Vault 111.

Our wife called us a vet, if I'm not mistaken. If so, that means my PC will behave like one and be more prepared for the Wastes. If we were always a civillian, probably something closer to my Lone Wanderer where the innocence is gradually lost.

If he's a veteran from the China front the fighting there was very intense, of course it was intense in anchorage too, and Europe, and the middle east, and everywhere basically. I think his "veteran" status is left up to the player, so you can decide if he was actually a combat vet or was just a desk worker, mechanic, or whatever.

Well, if we created a character that is skilled at combat skills, we can roleplay them as an frontline soldier I suppose. Considering the wife says "you're gonna knock them dead at the veteran Hall" suggest he is an rather condecorated soldier. My guess would be that the protagonist and his wife fought in the same unit in the army. They met there and got married.

Unless we've misunderstood that comment utterly and completely and our character is in actuality a comedian scheduled to perform stand-up comedy at the Veteran Hall.

I believe there were Japanese Americans who enlisted and were able to enlist during World War II so I do believe it would not be in confliction with the lore to create a Chinese spouse or protagonist. It could still fit with the spouse's comment about the Veteran Hall since they could have been well-liked, done some saves and been considered "one of the good ones" or "a credit to their race".

You know, I aways wondered if asian people got any kind of racism in the Fallout world. After all the americans were at war with the chinese.

One thing I know for sure, my character will always be on the lookout for commie spies.

He is from the time period.

I've wondered that too, actually, but while I imaging that a few people might draw a correlation between American propaganda imagery and some of the people of asian descent, I do not think most in the post-war world would, especially since a lot are unable to read and if someone did try to pass down racial sentiments or dislikes, they'd probably be so exaggerated they'd be taken for stories: the buck-toothed little people with the scrunchy eyes and long braid who came with flaming torches and a knife between their teeth. These stories might even be used to inflame hatred towards a different tribe by claiming they resemble these figures from the stories like some might use carictures of African Americans to do similarly.

I'd imaging the ones who'd really carry the racism torch still would be some ghouls because some of them were around before the bombs fell but considering people in the post-nuclar apocalyptic world has also developed a them versus us mentality in regards to mutated people like super mutants and ghouls, it is not even certain people would believe a ghoul if they claimed that these Chinese destroyed the world. Some ghouls probably would not see the point anymore.

Then again, FO3 had Chinese ghouls that were bad guys, so...

They did- How did I not know about this?!

I've speculated on this and I even roleplayed a ghoul in New Vegas with this headcanon, granted, he was Russian due China's alliance with Russia, but still!

I wondered if black people still experienced racism since it's set in a 50 style setting after all.

Well in Old World Blues, there were Chinese American prisoners who were bought in and tortured.

It was limited to one warehouse and the ghouls Attacked on sight, except using Chinese AK-47's (I believe). It took me a minute or two to realize they were yelling at me in a language I didn't undedstand in the least (Mandarin or possibly Cantonese, I would guess). Then you go through the computer files in the place and it pieces together the puzzle - it was a factory front for a number of Chinese spies and insurgents who got caught behind the lines when the bombs dropped and... well, never really gave up their cover.

Dedication, desperation or a last stand that took forever to come about.

Pretty much.

I think it was a cool idea, but it flew so under the radar it almost felt anti-climactic for what it really was. Ghouls couldn't learn a word of English in 250 years? Despite functioning as a legitimate front corporation for a number of years in America? Seems like a wasted opportunity.

I noticed that too. The few times we run into ghoulified chinese spies, it seems they are unaware the war ended, thinking they still have to fight the americans.

The Fallout world has a thing called the divergence, were their world and ours became different after an certain time period (namely WW2), were in their world, scientists never bothered to find cleaner and better energy sources, the lifestyle never changed after the 50's, the americans and russians became two friendly nations, etc. So it's hard to tell if their social values are different then ours, such as racism, gender issues, social norms and the like.
