I'm trying to think back that far. Western gaming wise.

Funnily, my favorite game from "2003" is Beyond Good and Evil. Check it out if you haven't. Protagonist is a mixed Asian girl... I think.

I'll say that I could use a Beyond Good and Evil sequel.. definitely.

edit: It didn't sell well, unfortunately. Gamers don't know what's good for them.

The trend goes back further, but I can name some off of the top of my head.  I'm going by PC and/or console games here, not handheld.  Also try to bare in mind, I'm going with the marketing and I'm trying to stick with non-Japanese games.  So I'm leaving characters like Snake out of this.  I'm also leaving out characters like Geralt and Batman due to their set appearance in their source material:

Dead Rising

Doom

Wolfenstein

Most CoD games

All of the MoH (Medal of Honor) games

Assassin's Creed

Dragon Age

Mass Effect

Star Wars, including the EA versions

Shadows of Mordor

Uncharted

The Last of Us

Starcraft, except for Kerrigan.  She was featured in the marketing for SC2 as much if not almost more than Jim Raynor was.

You should look up The Face of Gaming from E3 of last year.  It's rather pathetic how much of these characters just straight up look alike.  I'm bored of that look.

If the ME team wants to put a "face" on the N7 PC, then they should change things around at least as far as making the hero not white.  If they don't feel like doing that, then they should probably keep the helmet on and focus more on the look of the armor and the iconic nature of the N7 logo.

As far as Beyond Good and Evil, I plan on checking it out when I can.

Not an accurate portrayal of the future of humanity. Nor would it be accurate to put people of color in medieval, European style worlds of TW series. Right? I've heard this argument several times, especially about too many people of color in DAI or medieval Europe...or Ferelden.

Do only North Americans and Europeans get to make it to 2183 C.E.?

You insisted the default be Hispanic. Asian Hispanic, Black Hispanic, White Hispanic, Mestizo, Indian Hispanic, which type do you insist? Pretty diverse ethnic group you are working with.

I'd just like to see a non-white version of our male hero be featured in advertising at some point for Mass Effect. He most certainly will be marketed the most.

Um...  Yeah.  About that "no people of color in medieval Europe" thing...  You *might* want to go back and tell that to the Moors.  You know, before they conquered and ruled large parts of Europe for hundreds of years during the Middle Ages.

Yep.  The Arabs also traded with the Vikings as well.  Also, let's not forget the Mongols and how far they spread into western Russia.

That's not the same as DA. It's just random races placed in, like a modern melting pot country. They should have a history for it. I think that'd make it more interesting. Randomness sucks. There's nothing saying that Rivainis came in and invaded like the Moors. Or someone like Hannibal pillaging through Sicily.

Without history, it's just "token Asian woman" and "token black guy", rather than a narrative.

The DA team has stated as such, and they even talked about that being the reason for few Asian-looking characters in Thedas as of yet.  This is beginning to wander off-topic though.  We should probably focus a little more on ME.

There wouldn't be a token anything for the N7 player character.  Since all of those races exist in our world, I don't see why not.  Again, it's mainly stemming from my desire to see something new, mixed with wanting more of representation of people in general.   It wouldn't be anymore token than having one black teammate in ME2 (Jacob), or one black female in DA:I, (Vivienne) or someone darker skinned like Isabela in DA2, or one fully Hispanic party member in ME3. (James)

Wow, that's a rather sad trend right there.  I know that BioWare has come far with diversity, but they still have so much further to go.

I was going for the low hanging fruit.  The Moors were a large, permanent population in Europe for roughly 900 years.  Then you've got the Romani and the Ottomans, too.

Well, it makes complete sense in ME. The lore is multiracial... you could crazy with this.

James isn't full hispanic. He's half white... his real last name is Sanders. Same with Ashley apparently.

I'll still play Sheploo though, because custom faces looked like ass until ME3. Better shape, better textures. At least for males. It sucks when your own squad (Jack, Kaidan, Liara, etc) looks better than the protagonist. Only Sheploo looks as good as them. The custom males look like blockheads, with waxy skin. If they go for another face-scanned face in the new game, but different ethnicity, I'd be happy to use it.

I also think the Frostbite engine needs to be shown off more for non white skintones on human player characters in the advertising.  Frankly, the last two engines were overall pretty bad at any skintone other than something closer spray tan for the player character.

Oh and FemShep for the win.   :P  Mark Meer is a nice guy, but you can keep Sheploo.  I just can't.  The gorilla stomp...nope, can't do it.

I've never played Femshep, but I like her in the vids I've seen. I couldn't romance Jack with her anyways... who's about the only character I care to play the romance stuff with. :P

Frostbite produced some cool looking characters in Battlefield. Don't know if they were face scanned though... sure looked like it.

I enjoyed Garrus romance a lot, and I did it twice.  What can I say?  That friendship...and that voice.

I noticed the same thing about Battlefield, from the trailers.  This is a pretty engine, and I think it would be a shame if they didn't show it off by showing more diversity with their player designed main characters.

You're really grasping at very feeble straws.

Nobody is interested in a graphics demonstration of 'how black can this character be.' That's just silly.

I don't think you really understand what you're on about at all. You seem to think that older engines are good at making white people and as engines get more sophisticated, it becomes easier to make darker people. The Unreal Engine used in Mass Effect did a perfectly fine job handling Jacob and other dark characters.

White male is practically the default setting for the human race. It's bland and inoffensive like our food. It's usage in a marketing context is not merely to appeal to white males but it's counterintuitively inclusive by lacking specificity. Boobs and other optional extras (e.g. British Accent) would be more specific and hence less inclusive to absolutely everyone - black sikh females, east asian bi-sexuals, etc. I think we see this is why Superman, Batman, etc. are so enduring and not exclusive to any one culture.

Edit: I forgot to include South-American transsexuals. How forgetful of me.

We are talking about the default protagonist that is marketed in trailers and on the game cover.

They can use the Mako for both these thing...

I'd prefer either neutral like the Inquisition cover or having no character(s) featured on the cover, instead having it showcase the title or doing that but also having elements from the game. Marketing is a bit trickier, though...

I really don't care about this as long as the default face is iconic (like Sheploo's) doesn't matter if the guy is white or black or whatever (probably white for marketing)

No as long as the Male default face (I didn't like the cc in the original trilogy) and voice are awesome I don't care

The best solution would be to market both equally

The best solution to what? What is the problem that's needs a solution? Smart marketing targets key demographics. Women make up a very small minority of the people who played the Mass Effect trilogy so why would it be smart to target women as much as men?

... to better target their already existing demographic to increase their sales?

According to some surveys, women make up about half of PC gamers and RPG gamers, so marketing to that demographic makes sense.

The best solution is not to show them. Let each human being decide what her or she looks like, believes, like to eat, etc. It isn't that hard for f***'s f****** sake. Do you think people bought less of Fallout or Destiny because they box art had an unknown person in an unisex armor? "OMFG, there isn't a white dude in the cover art, I wont buy the game!"

No I don't want them to go the DA route I want to have an iconic face for the new protag not just some random dude like in DA:I
