They could call it Mass Effect : The Wonder Twins!
Oh fine. None of you get that joke. It's okay. I understand.

Those aren't official, they are fan art that clickbait website use. The only official stuff they show are those pictures in Comic Con (which featured both a male and a female) and the concept art from N7 day.
somehow this made me feel better because I've been seeing them cropping up all the time...
I think that they are going to have both. Have a female and a male on your team that you can "be". The only thing is is no "hot swapping" in the middle of combat, or ever. Once you choose your character's gender, you're stuck with it. This way they can show them both off, this way both can be happy.
Hey, cool... I just came up with a new name... Imagine if they were fraternal twins.

You know that VGA award sequence where FemShep and BroShep playing ME3 multiplayer with Garrus. This and this. They're already a better ad for the game.
That would only work if the character has an iconic look. You could get away with it for ME3 since Sheploo had the look, but a new character wouldn't be able to do that.
Here is a curveball for you to answer but a legitmate one. Say the main protagonist that Bioware/EA choses to go with this time is a female based off of a real life human like Sheploo was. What race would she be? We all talk about being tired of seeing white men as protagonist but at least we have had more non-white male gaming protagonist than we have had with non-white female protagonist. The only outlier would be the girl from Mirror's Edge and Sheva Alomar from Resident Evil 5. Other than that, white women characters have DOMINATED the videogame industry FAR more than white men has.
Personally I believe they would yet again go with the white female look instead of a black, asian, hispanic look. It seems the industry has shown far more racial diversity with male heros than they do with female heros.
A.) I think the people who are "tired" of seeing white male protagonists should really look in the mirror and ask themselves why their whitness upsets them so much. They might not like the answer, but it's the only way they'll get over it.
B.) There have been women based on a real look in the ME series: Liara and Samara were. Mostly, you're going with someone with a beautiful face. As far as I know, the motion capture technology doesn't map that.

How could someone mention Resident Evil and only mention Sheva? There's Ada Wong too. ![]()

I think you need to go back and re-read the thread. It's not about being white.
Anyway. I think I'd like to see a chinese or Indian female protag.

And some of the characters in Operation Raccoon City were of various ethnicity as well.

India Indian or Native American Indian?

Even if they are something like that, they better have a surname that fits all kinds of people's RP concepts. "Shepard" might be inspired by Alan Shepard, but it was pretty neutral, for all kinds of mixed characters at least.
Speaking of Alan Shepard, I wonder if they are going to channel old space race stuff again. Gagarin, Shepard, Grissom, etc

Not to sound racist, but Native American Indian will be a rarity in the ME future. Not extinct, but certainly a rarity like blondes are, and well my blonde fem default protagonist was shot down
.

I was aiming for iranian / middle eastern here.
Not sure it worked that well.
Can't blame you, Mass Effect's CC is really bad. It's great for creating ugly characters thou.
This is my best monster.
You tried doing it in Dragon Age: Inquisition? I've seen all kinds of crazy and awesome things come out of there. There's even a subreddit dedicated for CC with some awesome stuff.
You have to increase your companions' constitution with some of the faces you can make in Inquisition.

I wouldn't mind seeing a non-white female protagonist. I'm white and I make black, Hispanic, and Asian Shepards/Hawkes/Inquisitor's.
I find that it helps with role-playing.

When Bioware was polling the fans on a default Fem Shep concept for ME3, I was hoping the one at the bottom left would win. I didn't vote however, since I knew I was going to be importing a male Shep and probably not doing any non-import playthroughs with a new character.
I wouldn't mind seeing that concept resurrected for ME:Next or a subsequent ME game though, minus the obstructed vision.
Wasn't there some drama over the blonde winning?

Yeah, so they did another poll with that hairstyle but with different colors. Red hair won, thus the default female Shepard we have in ME3.
Still looks pretty caucasian to me.
Better angle here:

I wasn't too displeased with it

What was wrong with the blonde hair? People really like to whine about everything.
