You really do write some bollocks. An annoying fuddyduddy? Get a grip man. The fact that you think that a debate around a medium that has some issues it needs to face when it comes to how it both treats and portrays people who are not either white, male or straight does not make it 'pandering to minorities'. Here's a news flash for you: women are not a ****** minority.
Women are a minority in gaming and a very small minority in the action game market. There's nothing to face, that's just the reality of the video game market. Do action movies pander to women, a demographic less likely to buy a ticket? No, and why should they? Do romance novel publishers pander to men, a demographic less likely to buy the books? No, and why should they?
BioWare is a company, not an equal rights foundation or cultural enrichment think tank. They advertise to their key demographics because that's where the money is.
I came across this little gem a while ago when i got SR2 on a steam sale:
http://uk.ign.com/ar...ks-saints-row-2
Features this little gem (along with the charming photoshoot):
IGN: The only thing the readers of our site like as much as videogames are babes, and now they can get two for the price of one. So how did your role in Saints Row 2 come about?
That's just sad. Really sad. It's the sort of thing a 13 year old would write. And you think 'pandering to minorities' is diminishing the medium. I would suggest that this is far, far worse.
Gamers are mostly males under the age of 39, meaning they think with their penises. What is offensive about marketing to your target demo? If your target demo is stupid then your advertising should be stupid.
Incidentally, SR3 and SR4 are bloody brilliant examples of how they turned around their use of a female protag.
Just watched the trailers for Saints Row 3 and 4. Women in bikinis, a woman wearing only a thong and a belt on her huge breasts, female characters playing second fiddle, no female characters speaking at all. Where is the leap forward?
