I know I'm a sadist for even attempting this, on a mage playthough no less, but can it be done/has anyone done it?
Pro-Templar Rivalmance Fenris...is it possible?

I would think so, so long as you don't mind metagaming and avoiding taking him to certain places. You might need to be a bit pro-slaver, though, given most of his rivalry points come from either being pro mage or pro slaver, from what I remember. You can also pick up the odd rivalry point from things like either being overly sympathetic (he finds it patronising, I guess) *or* completely unsympathetic when he's talking about his problems. E.g. when you first meet him and he asks... I can't remember exactly what he asks, but it's along the lines of "what do you want out of being a mage", the 25 point answer ("seeking power") is probably not something a pro-Templar mage would think/say, but they might well ask "is it going to be an issue?" which gets +20 rivalry. You can also get 10 points rivalry for keeping Thrask's secret (which, however pro-Templar you are, you might still excuse with "it's not so different than what Mother did for us, and more to the point, his daughter's already dead, is there any point getting him in trouble now?")
As far as the pro-slaver stuff, I think a fair amount of it can be more about being merciful/not killing people for the sake of it, rather than being *pro* slaver per se, e.g. sparing Danzig, although you'd probably then have to spare other NPCs when you have the chance to, for consistency, which means less fights I guess. http://dragonage.wik...Fenris/Approval

Sure, if you don't take him to mage quests until maxing his rivalry. Thankfully, his friendship/rivalry conversations isn't tied to the mage-templar conflict unlike Anders', so there will be no immersion breaking. You don't even have to be a d*ck to him or spare slavers:
"Bait & Switch" - +20 rivalry for "what kind of mage" question;
"Fenris Recruited" - +15 rivalry for telling Kirkwall is your home now, that he shouldn't pursue Danarius and finish with "I'm sorry;"
"Speak to Fenris" Act2 - +5 for flirt;
"Book of Shartan" - automatic +15;
"A Bitter Pill" - +5 rivalry for trying to converse with slavers during initial ambush. Then return to Kirkwall and enter Hightown district at night to be ambushed - +10 rivalry for humorous response. Don't say "I'm sorry" to Orana and don't offer her a job. +5 for telling Hadriana she can't be trusted and then automatic +10 for any response. +20 for conversation in Hawke's mansion upon quest's completion and hey - you're locked.

I almost always rival Fenris, and I had a play through like that one game where I RP'd that Hawke was supportive of mages at first (coming from a family of mages and all), but then turned on them...so I got to pick up plenty of rivalry points in the beginning in Act 1. You could probably do it with a blood mage Hawke who sides with the Templars not because Hawke is anti magic, but for power, privilege, and to try and conquer Kirkwall. Meredith pretty much assumes that's exactly what mage Hawke is doing anyway when she turns on you after siding with the Templars.

Considering it's possible to friendmance Fenris as a pro-mage mage, I would imagine the opposite is equally possible. You'd have to metagame like hell to do it, as gnewna points out, but it should be possible.
