I wonder what's going to happen to Obsidian in MCA's absence.

Might not hurt the Pillars franchise (if there are to be sequels). The gamerules and the setting is already in place. But for future products....might hurt them a bit, yes.

Wasn't Sawyer the lead designer on Pillars anyway? From what I recalled Avellone had little to do with it.

I think Avellone had a lot of say in the game system and the rules etc.

He probably did because under Sawyer it would be 1TVWQNP.png

That's a shame.

Chris was one of the big reasons why Obsedian games were awesome.

Surprisingly little. MCA has been a pinch hitter at Obsidian since Alpha Protocol. His roles in New Vegas, South Park, Dungeon Siege 3 and Pillars of Eternity have been limited to DLC and companion character writing. His role had to do more with oversight and managing the other writers. Which is still quite a task, but maybe he wants to take on a project from start to finish as a lead writer as opposed to playing management and support.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if George Ziets somehow made his way back to Obsidian, or that Chris Avellone was lured by Fargo and InXile to be a lead on Bard's Tale IV. Mark it down. Shuffling of the deck chairs.

What I'm more interested in is that Chris is a co-owner of Obsidian. What happens with his stock and part ownership?

He could also have been poached to work on Fallout 4. I think those two projects (Bard's Tale, Fallout) are the only ones that could push Avellone from Obsidian (a company he co-founded and part-owns) at this point. Either that, or something unrelated with games altogether. Who knows. Wish him all the best though, am a massive fan of his work.

I can't imagine it is Fallout 4 at this point, if the game is less than six months from release. That's practically worthless to bring Avellone in at this point in development. Although I hadn't considered Bard's Tale.

My worst fear?

Am I the only one who thinks Gaider isn't terrible?

WHEN DID I NOT GET THIS UPDATE?

He's terrible when it comes to lore consistency.

Other than that I think he's a good writer. I enjoyed quite a few of his characters.

He does good character writing. But when writing narrative sequences or tying together multiple storylines I have not been as enamored as many. And the romance content that is now irrevocably tied to his work (whether he likes it or not) is silly to me. Wasteful, even.

And I don't think he and Chris would balance each other out... they would either compromise each other's best qualities to the point of mediocrity or they would wind up mortal enemies and kill each other in an Old West showdown at noon. Either way, the game they'd be working on wouldn't be worth a hill of beans.

I think Gaider is excellent at creating characters. A bit up and down when it comes to the lore, though. I like the fellow, too, though.

Josh Sawyer: After all that has happened, and still you live. You are difficult to kill.

David Gaider: For one as limited in writing emotional narratives as you, perhaps. To have fallen so far and learned nothing - that is your failure.

Josh Sawyer: The failure is yours. No longer do your romances crawl within my skull, no longer do we suffer beneath preset protagonists that weaken us. And now you run in search of good video game writers... they are all gone, save one. And one broken Avellone cannot stop the darkness that is to come.

Gotta give him, I thought Cassandra was quite well written in Inquistion if we can get past the whole introduction and her letting her own prisoner be in charge of too many things while still going "how can I know you can be trusted!?"
