The problem arises in that it's a face texture, not a helmet. The code can't make a helmet into a face texture or vice versa, and there's no way to change a face texture in-game (without modding) other than to use the Black Emporium. So, there's no logistical way to make the face paint function as part of a DLC given how Frostbite and their code is written - it *has* to be a mod.

Wouldn't BW be able to make a helmet version, just like the Qunari vitaar?

No, because the Qunari vitaar is not a helmet, but an extra texture layer on the head. Someone figured out how to use the Iron Bull Dread helmet code so male Qunari PCs can wear helmets, but even then, it's still limited and is an exploitation of something already in the game. There isn't a precedent for a face texture to be treated as a helmet or vice versa for the human/elf/dwarf races in particular.

While it's true that, theoretically, BW *could* do anything with their engine. However, they would have to completely recreate/rewrite the part which controls helmets and face textures to make a face texture work as a helmet, which is not a simple endeavor.

I guess what I meant to say was couldn't BW make a vitaar for all races...modelled after the Avvar face paint?

Ah, I see. Sorry, missed that obviously. :) Coding wise that would be easier, yes, but they'd still be adding to the game in the case of dwarf/elf/human. Qunari could have a special vitaar made for face paint, but since a similar texture isn't programmed for the other races it would have to be added. Though the texture itself wouldn't be hard to make, putting it into the mix along with all the other elements would be more problematic and still require a commitment of resources. Given how budgeting tends to be for video games, my guess is that if they considered this at all, they most likely concluded that it didn't have a sufficient ROI for such a minor DLC.

So we're again back at theoretically possible and easier than making it a helmet, but still logistically unlikely.

One idea that popped into my head, was putting it into the CC under a second Tattoo section, but idk if that would be possible.

Tattoos, like scars, are fairly resource intensive (though they don't look it). They are configurable by both color and intensity, and still have to play nice with all the other layers. Remember that the older consoles (PS3/360) and weaker PCs can't have scars because adding just that extra layer to the CC made the game slow down - the machines simply couldn't handle all the different threads that were being thrown at it. There are several different aspects to creating a character already, and every new layer adds more resources that are then overloading the machine or taking resources away from another aspect of the game.

In practice, the face paint works best as a complexion, because the original texture is a face texture and all the races already use all those. Since complexions can only be changed in the Black Emporium, however, I would imagine Bioware simply decided leaving it out was the better option, given the hurdles it would have taken to put it in the game. Modders are more free in a lot of ways than developers and publishers are.

It would be super-d-duper cool if someone could make a downloadable mod for it! I have the plugin to open those sorts of files with Photoshop (I tried to do some editing of neck seams in Skyrim that failed miserably), but I still would have no idea what to do with them.

The main hurdles to that is that the paint is blue in the face texture and doesn't overwrite, say, blush. So to make a real mod, it would be only one color (the modder above chose black and white) and the player would still need to disable their blush.

The body paint armor is tintable, right? Or the color is determined by materials in the schematic? Or is there a default color? I don't own it, so I'm not sure.

Can someone post a male dwarf version of it, please?  :)

You can tint it as any other armor.

Does Varric count? He does, right? If so, here you go.

I'm sure there were at least six faintings and one serious fight in Val Royeaux because of those outfits. Eh, Orlesians...

I would love to see all these armors  on a Qunari Inquisitor. I was thinking it would pass as body Vitaar.

I'll use Bull male qunari? He uses the same model as male qunari Inquisitor in those armors.
