I thought the harassment that guy Mr. Fish suffered was awful really.

Maybe but it doesn't mean he still isn't a complete ass.

Five Nights At Freddies is the worst thing in gaming right now.

So easy to make, Scott **** out three of them in under a year.

What is your opinion on this section of the industry? Do you like what they are doing?

I barely know the subculture.

Do you like the products?

Do you think it is pretentious 'art?'

Sometimes yes, sometimes no for both. Development from a group or subculture isn't a guarantee for good/bad/pretentious/2deep4u quality.

Boring answers aside, I'd Gone Home to do the Limbo before it was cool 8-|

Tell us how you really feel.

I'm fairly certain that covered it.

Isn't he making a 4th?

Yep. And WB has the film rights now.

That movie'll be a travesty.

indies are a figment of imagination when employees are interchangeable and disposable in the video game development business. one major release and small company balloons overnight into something EA or Activision will likely want to buy and milk into mediocrity.

They're too short and they spend too much time pandering instead of focusing on a strong story. I once made my own version of a Leisure Suit Larry game using only the RPG Toolkit 2.0 software without any assistance and at the end the game easily ran up to 2 hours and that's with knowing the puzzle solutions and key-item locations.

I don't really know why people assume indie game developers are pretentious or something either, they're just obviously unhappy with the state of games development and make their own, there is nothing pretentious about that, in fact it means we get to play more games.

I thought the harassment that guy Mr. Fish suffered was awful really.

Yeah, I agree. I have no problem with indie games as long as they give me as good a storyline experience as AAA games. But, Some of the things i heard Phil Fish say were a little bit dumb to be honest.

I'm pretty sure the OP isn't referring to all indie games, just a particular subset of them, made by pretentious ****s who would rather blather on about how amazing their "art" is and how no-one understands them, then actually make, you know, games.

This. The OP is making a clear distinction between "Hipster Indie" and general Indie development. While I do have a heavy interest in independently developed and published games such as many Kickstarter projects, the tag refers to games that are made by a clique of game developers with strong online presence and influence, who see themselves primarily as social activists and are very close (professionally and personally) with progressive gaming media sites such as Polygon and Kotaku.

Games under this category include Nina Freeman's "Freshman Year":

mirror_640.png

Freshman Year is a vignette game about an ordinary night in the life a college freshman named Nina. Nina's best friend Jenna invites her to meet up at a local bar with some classmates. Jenna is sort of flaky though, so Nina has to navigate the party by herself. You play as Nina, texting with her friend Jenna as you mingle, dance, drink and wait.

Please be aware that this game depicts scenarios that may be distressing to people who have experienced abuse.

Freshman Year was developed by designer Nina Freeman, with art by Laura Knetzger and music by Stephen Lawrence Clark.

This game is autobiographical, based on the experience of designer Nina Freeman.

Please also check out the Steam page for "how do you Do It?", another autobiographical vignette game from a team including the designer of Freshman Year.

David S Gallant's "I get this call every day":

igtced_screen1.png

Exactly what it says on the box: a lightly filtered experience pulled from my (now former) day job in a customer service call centre, made interactive in a point-&-click format. Lose politely, or lose spectacularly; the choice is yours.

Finally, Anna Anthropy's "Dys4ia":

dys4ia.png

Dys4ia is a series of mini-games that explore the cultural challenges and personal hardships of being a transgender person. The game is broken up into four sections that shows players the intricacies of gender representation, hormone therapy complications, financial and medical issues, and the journey to things “getting better”.

I've already posted my thoughts on it, but yeah. What the OP is talking about isn't the usual "Indie" games you'd think about. This isn't about games like FTL or Hotline Miami or even Five Nights at Freddy's.

Hipsters, in any industry are a blight

This is also an answer most acceptable, in just about any circumstance.

Don't care for indie games. I don't buy $300-400 consoles to play a game that looks like it was made 20 years ago

I watched every episode of Breaking Bad, and I don't remember Walter White having a side job as a games journalist.
