I don't like Bianca, the lady dwarf, myself. Feels like she is stringing him along into something he can never have because DWARF traditions. But I understand why. Still can't hope enough that she meets a spear somehow.

He is a grown man.....he can get away but won't....he share the Blame... -_-

I'm not a fan of Bianca either, to say the least.  I've made several ranting posts about her, so I'll spare you guys tonight.  Whether we find the relationship healthy or not, it does explain why Varric isn't a player LI and will never be one.

Also, if you're feeling really cynical, look at this way.  Varric is about 40 years old.  He's been hung up on the same woman for about 12 years or so.  They have a "star-crossed" lover relationship that most people grow out of by the time they're 30.

Do you really want to romance a 40 year old guy, that, by his own admission, doesn't deal with his problems?  One that's so hung up on this shaky relationship that he treats his weapon as a proxy for the woman he loves?  Aren't many of us sick of the Therapist Hero for the Romance syndrome?

Maybe it's because I'm getting closer to 40 than I like to think about, but that doesn't sound like someone I'd want to try to be with.  Varric is still one of my all time favorite BioWare characters, and I felt like I had a friendship with him on my Inquisitors.  I'm happy to have some more DLC adventures with him, but I'm also happy to see him go home.  Poor guy needs to, for Kirkwall's sake and his own.

I'm with bondari.  I would never want a BW writer to feel obligated to make their characters into LIs.  If they don't want to do it, or don't feel it would suit the character, then I'd rather have them stick to their guns.

I'll say it again:

He's 40, and has been in love with a woman going back to his late 20s.  Deny all you want, but that's the facts.  We can't do anything about it, so might as well accept it.

There is always another game, with another character.   :P

The whole thing is a borked up co-dependent relationship.  Neither party is in the right on this.  I've seen this before in real life.  Trust me, it's not worth being the rebound relationship in the wake of a bad relationship that lasted over 10 years.  Personal experience?  Not quite, but I was the first girlfriend after my ex's divorce.  That....wasn't a bright idea.  He wasn't a bad guy, far from it, but doing that was a terrible mistake for both of us.

It's really for the best that Varric isn't a player LI.  I'd rather root for someone like Harding for a future LI for a DA game.  I'm sure her, or any other dwarven LI is gonna have some issues, but Varric has too many as far as I'm concerned.

I was someone's rebound, didn't realize it until the second time around. Somehow I'm the ******* in that one. Just lowered my faith in others honesty. It's why I don't like Bianca and sort of identify with Varric. He's a wuss, and I was too in that regard.

I don't think any of us are wusses for falling into relationships.  We we're all mortal, and we make mistakes.  Try not to let someone lower your faith in others, if you can.  You made an error in judgment and learned from it.  <big hugs>

For the record, I felt the same way.  I was more in Varric's shoes with my first fiancee.  Wasted 4 years of my life on that twit.   <_<

Edit: Something else I thought of.  None of the relationships between the PC and the LI have really ended on a great note, especially for the other party.  DA:O?  Well, you leave regardless, die or even if you ride off with Alistair as a Warden, the Warden hero is MIA and Warden Alistair comes back to be possibly left in the Fade.  They are obviously far apart, no matter what.

With Leliana, she's MIA from the Warden, same as Zevran.  With Morrigan, he had to leave behind his love and his child.

Regardless of whether or not Hawke is left behind, s/he's separated from the person they love to protect them.  In the case of the Anders romance, it's to protect him from Cory's influence.  Even if s/he isn't left behind in the Fade, they've disappeared for now.

Yeah, maybe Varric was the one that got lucky here.

I wonder how the Inquisitor will turn out in that respect, at least for anyone that didn't get roped into Wolfy's temp agency of love. Hopefully this isn't Ameridan 2: The Vanishment all over again, 'cause that sh*t gets kinda old.

I just kinda felt bad for him. This game was not kind to Varric.

Varric himself has a banter about treating characters kindly. Of course they're talking about the Knight Captain from Swords and Shields.

I think it's the other way around. She wants to elope, but Varric wants to keep the Merchant Guild from imploding (and wants to avoid a life on the run, especially for Bianca) so he pushes her to be with Not-Varric, but they're people, so they still hook up occasionally as she cuckolds her husband.

I really didn't like her,and I felt like the situation that developed might have finally made him start to rethink everything with her. It would be fun. To me there's no real reason to be a dwarf otherwise.

Firstly, Bianca counts. Secondly, the Inquisitor might not be considered as a LI at all and it doesn't decrease value of the friendship.

So the other guy still gets to be the sucker in it. Nice.

Cuckolding is a very old story concept, and more often than not, it's the clueless husband that is the sucker.

It's part what makes everyone involved crappy people.

I'm not sure how clueless the husband is in this case, but I also think it's besides the point.

He probably is clueless about though, because they've been meeting in secret so the Guild (or Carta?) doesn't know about it

I think you're right, and it would seem to fit his character. I always got the impression he was less comfortable with a mage siding Hawke for some of the same reasons.

The fact that he decides to return home to help people at the end of DAI is significant, I think, because it suggests he's ready to start confronting some of his problems, and he has become less selfish during time with the Inquisition. I don't know what that means for Bianca, but he's kind of at a turning point, so who knows.

I wouldn't mind a cameo for DA4, especially if we're in the Free Marches.  I'd like to check up on him as a player, make sure he's okay.  I agree that he had a personal breakthrough during his quest.  No matter what happens between him and Bianca, I'd like to think he's going to make a change for the better.  Plus, I wouldn't mind finding some small way to help him out in the next game, even if we aren't in the Free Marches.

I thought Bianca was dead.

I still think she probably should have been dead. I would have found a plot about Varric finding closure and acceptance about her being gone less frustrating than the one we got.
