There is no such thing as a Half-Elf in Thedas. Any child born to an Elf will be the species of other race.
There is such a thing as "Elf-Blooded", but it's not a physical difference, just a legal/cultural term.

One thing I've wondered. If an Elf-blooded human reproduces with another elf-blood, or a full elf, is the result always a human? Are we talking Mendelian genetics?

Yeah, its still a human in that case as "Elf-blooded" is still human. There are no difference between a human and someone who is Elf-blooded. It's just a slur.
Now, if you had a human and a dwarf I believe you can get some kind of half-dwarf. Dunno how Qunari works...

I think for table-top roleplaying I'd go with the Mendelian approach. Make pointy ears a recessive trait that usually gets sorted out of the gene pool when elf-blood meets human but crops up again when elf-blood meets elf or (one in four times) when elf-blood meets elf-blood. The computer game reasons for having it the way it is don't apply to any other medium.

There's no computer game reason here... The devs have stayed its a lore reason. No elf blood ever has pointy ears or anything like that because there is no part of them that is "elf". They are 100% human. Exactly the same as if they had 2 human parents.

Unless they reveal what that reason is, I think I'll ignore them.

I guess you can do that... But if you are going to ignore lore because it doesn't have an explanation yet, you're going to be ignoring a lot more than human-elf genetics!

But Feynriel did look different. He had not exactly pointy ears, but the certainly did look 'elfy' and he was more slim and had some elven features (I can't exactly point it, but he looked more elven than human to me)
Therefore I was very surprised, that Alistair was supposed to have an elven mother too, because of Feynriel (you may have seen my surprised post here
, I'm playing DAI at the moment and have met Fiona, so I know, who his mother is). because Alistair just looks human, Slim Couldry too (if I remember correctly), but Feynriel looks elven (or more elven than human imo).
Generally I'm ok with childs of humans and elfs looking more human and the link, where Gaider explains it in detail is great. I was just referring to Feynriel, because he does seem to fall a bit out of that category. As I remember correctly, Alistair is never even suspected as having an elven parent, whereas Feynriel doesn't fit anywhere because of his very mixed features.

He doesn't have any of the features specific to Elves. His facial features might be "Elfy" but they are features that can be had by humans too. I know people in real life with features similar to what Elves in DA have, but I'm pretty sure they are not secretly Elves! ![]()

That may be, but Feynriels ears certainly give him away imo. Compared to the humans ingame, he looks also a slightly more slender, but as I said, I'm ok with elf/human children being essentially human

Afaik it (his appearance, that is) was somewhere confirmed as a mistake made during rushed development of DAII.
Though, I must say, the whole thing of human-elven genetics is handled rather...
Let's just say that's one of the things I'm not a fan of in how various things regarding elves and magic (taken together or separately) are handled
But that's just my personal opinion. The canon as well as word of god is pretty straightforward in that we're supposed to forget the face of Feynriels (not much of a loss for memory, really) as a bit of an accident and nothing more.
"Half elves" are humans; case closed.
Unless they reveal what that reason is, I think I'll ignore them.
Magic. And we know that the elves are special - this is fundamental to DA:I, and trespasser. Presumably, whatever happens in Thedas when people are born dilutes whatever the elves were even further than the raising of the Veil already diluted them. Adds weight to the theory that elves were originally spirits.
if you've played the game you've seen the results for the most common one, human and elf = alistair.

There is the case of Zevran's lover Rinna, who he claimed in DAO was an "elven lass". However, WOT2 has this to say about her on pg96, which is a report talking about Zevran's history:
Everything I've found in the records states that neither Zevran nor Taliesen showed any particular promise in the early years of their training. Certainly Talav never noted it in his records, though I would not put it past him to conceal as much. They both went through all the regular ordeals, the tests for pain resistance, the gauntlets—but it was not until the arrival of a woman by the name of Rinnala in 9:16 Dragon that they began to really matter. Rinnala came to House Arainai through the Azul contract, meaning she was yet another of Prince Estefan's bastards for us to hide away, and as the Arainai had fallen to Second Talon by that point, it was their turn.
