I've gotten a bunch of non-dragon weapon purples off of the dragon too. True, many of the purples were salvage material, but I've also gotten Superb Stamina, Caliban, Audacity, and Nameless blade. If you're still in the chase for uniques, the dragon gives you that extra chance for loot.
I literally never gotten any purple non-dragon weapons from dragons, only superb runes.
