How far down the line can we expect that to happen? A place where, just like armor, you can buy ships, customize the ship, give it upgrades etc?
I know it wont be a thing in the next game, but surely, it will get implemented sometime?

I actually don't find it that far-fetched. Not buying new ships, of course, but upgrades, paint job etc.

I am almost sure that you will be able to customize the ship in the next game. But ability to go trough clasess and buy a completely new one with different benefits, layout, and hell, maybe even culture
That'll probably be too much. The ship is a hub we use to interact with squadmates, merchants etc. To have multiple such hubs with different layouts (and thus different scripting for squadmate movements)... won't happen IMO.
I'd love to be able to change the visual look of the ship without affecting the layout though.
Reminds of when I used to do that in the old Ratchet and Clank games lol. Customizeable ship paint and interior would be awesome. If anything in the leak is true it appears we can plaster our screenshots around our ship, which is cool. If it was a feature in ME2 I'm sure a lot of Normandy's would be plastered with pictures of Miranda's butt lol.
I would prefer if Mass Effect stayed as "soldier in space" game and didn't evolve into a "spaceship in space" game. I don't need more diluted gameplay to try to get a tiny number of people from another genre to buy the game.
The ship I don't think so, to many work with the cutscenes etc.
But the Mako yep why not, being able to paint it, buy more weapons, upgrades etc.
I doubt we'll get to buy entirely new ships as that adds a whole lot more resources required which could be better spent elsewhere in my opinion. I love that someone mentioned Ratchet and Clank
Even though the customisations in that were small considered to what other games give us its still something eh?
Anyway, back to topic... I'd love to be able to customise the ship in smaller ways though. Like Vazgen said, the visual look of the ship.
It would probably never happen.
As mentioned in previous posts your ship in the Mass Effect series is a mini-hub. There's just too much going on there for there to be multiple versions of your hub, particularly if people want to keep some of the features of the previous game, like squadmates interacting with the protagonist in cinematic cutscenes, interacting with each other, and moving about the ship.
If the protagonist is military there shouldn't be any customization greater than what we had in the Shepard trilogy either. (armor/weapons upgrades)
I'm not so sure about being able to buy "new" ships. I wouldn't be surprised if you could customize your existing ship, though. I would also imagine upgrades, like in ME2, except maybe a little more relevant to how our ship works on the galaxy map. Maybe one upgrade makes FTL travel between stars faster, another makes movement in system faster (maybe making it easier to outrun baddies, like the Reapers in ME3), another makes you consume less fuel, another makes your ship less likely to draw enemy attention, etc...

Miranda: Shepard, we need to talk about your... decorations.
