I just had a bright Idea. What if there was something like the Orient (China, Japan, Thailand, Etc.) in the Dragon Age Universe. This would make a great DLC. Here is the Plot: You've stopped the demonic forces of the Fade - Now it is time to travel to the far east, to a land that only rumors swirl about, to unlock a new, long lost and forgotten chapter of the Inquisition.  Travel to the land of (Any acceptable name) to uncover lost secrets. Win the trust of the Emperor, and go down in history as the first inquisitor to travel to the far east.

Learn a new form of Unarmed Combat: Learn to destroy your foes with nothing but your fists and feet. Create a fighting style all your own.

Learn the forgotten chapter of the Inquisition: Uncover the fate of an expedition sponsored by the Inquisition.

Further Strengthen the Inquisition: Increase your power with new, never-before-seen-in-the-west armors and weapons, and schematics, and tackle new operations at the war table.

Gain new allies, and new enemies: Encounter the demon-like Oni, and welcome the Ninja (rogue), the Samurai (warrior), and the Wu Jen (mage) into your team.

This is all that I have so far. If anyone wants to comment on it, or add to it, I would appreciate it.

It's a fine idea that would be even better if it were just Jade Empire 2.

If you try, I think you can squeeze in a few more clichés.

I think encountering a culture that is based on a real world culture from Asia, similar to how for example Orlais is loosely based on France, could be interesting. If they do go that route eventually, say for example with the Fex, I think the Mongolians of Genghis Khan's era would make a good basis. The Mongols had contact with Europeans during the medieval period.

Yeah if they're going to add in a new "zone" to Thedas I'd rather it be, you know, ORIGINAL instead of "cheesy China/Japan knockoff #473".

The way they've been "loosely basing" Thedosian cultures after real world ones basically involves the use of a.) stupid stereotypes (French people like fashion!) and b.) accents.  Having James Hong suddenly show up to voice a yellow character is going to make it sound unspeakably racist no matter what you do.  I mean, seriously, imagine if they'd had Ser Barras or Vivienne voiced by some actor with an African accent.  Good gravy.

They appreciate style, orlesians, in all forms. I wouldn't write off the orlesians altogether as a poor stereotype as appearance isn't the only thing they value. For example, being aloof or never quite honest (while I find it boring) is an art in itself. They also hold their chevaliers in high regard as they represent a wide array of style, honor, strength, grace or humility while looking in cultural fashion, fashionable.

I don't think they were racist with Orlais.

I liked the Oriental Adventures AD&D rulebook as much as the next guy, but I don't need them in Thedas.

They're not a poor stereotype.  I'm saying that INASMUCH AS THEY ARE BASED ON THE FRENCH, it is on silly stereotypes.  There's very little that's truly "French" about Orlais.

If they were to bring in a new land that was "based on Asia" to the extent and degree that Orlais is "based on France", it'd look unspeakably racist and there's basically nothing they could do about it except by opening a portal to Real World Earth and sending DA4 to REAL WORLD Asia.

This is why when other games try this, you end up with talking pandas, and I don't want talking freakin' pandas in Thedas.

I wouldn't mind there being pandas in Thedas.

So I can kill them and wear their skins.

If they're going to draw on oriental cultures, I'd sooner just get my Jade Empire sequel and be done with it. That franchise is FULL of untapped potential.

This.

I don't think Thedas has an "oriental" vibe built-in.

Lets keep kung fu out of DA. The series has gotten tainted enough by anime as it is.

First

@TommyServo: It doesn't have to be Jade Empire 2, it just has to be a change from Medieval Europe to Ming Dynasty china/Feudal Japan. A change from Same-old to WOW!

@ Captain Wiseass: It doesn't have to be cliche, it just has to be different.

@mjb203: If you don't like it, don't post.

@Han shot first: I'm glad you agree with me.

@PsychoBlonde: This idea can be changed and adapted and refitted at will, you just need to post your ideas. I also see how you got your name.

@Sylvius the Mad: AD&D will not be in this, I promise. Eagle Scout's honor.

@KaiserShep: I think that there should be two different kinds of pandas: one that is feral, and one that is more like humans.

@TheOgre: Sexy, anthropomorphic panda in stripper plate, can ya handle that?

@dgcatanisiri: This can be an acceptable substitute while Bioware works on Jade Empire 2.

@caradoc2000: But that doesn't mean that it can't be added and the lore can say that the far ease has simply had "No Contact" with the rest of Thedas.

@ Everyone; There will be ABSOLUTELY NO references to any anime works currently available now! NarutoInuyasha, and nothing else of any others that deal with Medieval Orient whatsoever! I promise, with my honor as an eagle scout on the line.

---

I just had some more ideas, here they are:

Allies from Thedas interact with allies from the East: Sera gets accepted into a ninja clan, causing a schism between progressive-minded ninjas, and traditionalists; Blackwall and the Samurai engage in a game of Go; Solas and/or Vivienne meet and debate magical philosophy with the Wu Jen; Cassandra spars with the Samurai (although it doesn't look like it).

Resolve disputes between east and west: Iron Bull gets into a (violent) disagreement with the Samurai; Vivienne and the Wu Jen almost get into a magical duel; Blackwall is almost murdered by the ninja; and so on.

Gain Features that normally belong to other classes: A warrior learns how to use a bow; a mage learns the secret of stealthy casting; a rogue learns swordplay (via a ninja-to).

Decorate your stronghold with exotic decorations: An eastern scroll decorating the hall; a zen garden on the grounds; Alarm systems for thwarting nighttime assasination missions.

More potions, tonics, and grenades, and new enhancements to older ones: Use eastern herbs to make new potions, and improve old ones with new effects.

This is what I got, what do you have?

These are ALL such GREAT ideas.

I wouldn't expect anything less from an Eagle Scout, though.

Dragon Age: Mist of Pandaria?
Please let's not go there. I rather make a new game for it. I haven't played JE, but it sounds like they are better off making a second one. Let there be a time and place for everything. There's more of Thedas to explore that sound very interesting. Let it be Antiva or Seheron or Taventir instead.

My opinion is that if they were to introduce an oriental culture, don't restrict it to a DLC.  Make this into a place in Thedas that we can return to and visit.  Integrate this with the rest of the lore of Thedas and make it apart of the rest of the series.  I don't think a one-off DLC would be enough for this idea.  Thedas is still evolving and not set in stone.  There could be an oriental culture/nation out in Thedas that has been unexplored or "lost."  The writers haven't created it yet.  I think this is a good time to ask them to consider expanding the lore for a new culture.

Just my two cents.

Makutamon, as others have stated, this stuff would be better in a Jade Empire 2 game. Your ideas are all horrible stereotypes of eastern culture. I've got a huge problem with people who think EVERY real world culture needs to be represented in a fantasy setting. All that does is take away part of what makes that fantasy world fun. It would be just as awful if the reverse were happening and someone suggested that knights, squires, wizards, and clerics needed to be in JE. Let Dragon Age be Dragon Age! So, yet again for your ideas, NO.jpg

Please don't take this as a personal attack, I would just rather have the writers focus on expanding the cultures already established in DA rather than introduce new ones. Your ideas would be great for a game setting in an eastern culture, but not in DA.

I would like to see a DLC where one can interact with the Inquisitor’s relatives/acquaintances of his/her past in late game after completing all of the personal War Table tasks.

For example, my Dalish Inquisitor kept his clan alive and somewhat in control of the city of Wycome. I would like to see him interact with his surviving clan members and meet the Keeper’s new First, since my character is no longer the clan’s First but leader of the Inquisition.

About the clan’s First, if the player chooses an elven mage then this character was maybe Second then became First. But if a warrior or rogue was chosen, then the character was always First of the clan.
