Why don't you promote?

I have seem people on BSN advocate NOT promoting your characters. On top of that, I see many people in pugs (sometimes routine and threatening) that are playing with level 20s. I am not sure I understand the reasoning by this and genuinely would like to know your reasons for NOT promoting.

People who don't promote:

(Necromancer Voice) Why? How? How does that help you?

The only reason I'd ever refrain from promoting is if I'm farming perilous dragons for loot and want to carry my weight (I'm on the low end of total promotions compared to most BSNers).

But if I'm not doing that, then yeah, that character shoots back to 1 the second I return to the lobby.

Seconded.

Not all of us have the same amount of free time.  Once I am in a good group, I don't want to start all over.  I will play for a few games before promoting.

It would require playing more than I want to. It's not about how it helps me, it's about not being interested in grinding DAMP.

I'm fairly low on all promotions, 20+ on each... but I always promote, I have most of the top tier gear.

lol.  if a person is playing with my group for a while and hits 20, and continues to play a lvl 20, i feel bad.....  I always offer to carry the person as a lvl 1 if they want to promote.  I like to see people making progress.

If I promote I usually have either a team that is willing to carry me or another character that I can switch to.

It seems MORE tedious to me to play at 20 the whole time while gaining nothing but gold and whatever happens to drop.

It's really not about e-peen. To me its more like not shifting up when you are at redline.

Leveling is such drag, first you have no cool powers and when you hit level 16, it takes forever to get to 20. But I am still trying, I usually have few characters on 20 in case we are going into perilous and meanwhile work on other ones. It just goes so slow :(

Because the idea of promoting/grinding mindlessly for hours is exactly what made me quit this game for more than 2 months. I don't play MMOs for that reason alone.

When I'm in a position to do that, I certainly would. However, since I frequently pug, I couldn't do that and effectively farm loot at the same time. Quick example: I pug a perilous and carry a few games as they approach max level. I feel comfortable with the group and promote, then swap to a slightly weaker, but still effective, class. That one change was enough to halt our perilous progress. Everyone bounced after two failed attempts.

This is becoming less of an issue as I add more skilled players, but for a while I didn't have much of a choice. Either I farm for the best loot and gold at 20 or I don't farm. And I'm still missing some great end game gear.

I'm not really getting how promotions make it more of a grind. To me running the same 4 maps with no variation seems like more of a grind. At least with promoting I either have to drop down a difficulty or have a much more challenging run. Otherwise I am just playing groundhog day over and over getting gold to earn myself pulls on the slot machine. At least that 1 extra point is a guaranteed reward.

Maybe its just a difference of opinion. I tend to tolerate grindy RPGs more than some.

this Boggles my mind...... promoting ids not slow... you can promote fast even on perilous if you utilize your time right in lobby and in game.

but if you dont promote it is slow the more you promote the faster you dispatch enemies the faster you clear stages the faster you lvl the more exp per hour.

Q.o but I get the fun part, its all about being with friends and having fun at the end of the day *shrugs*

^ instead of doing the crafting respecs, I just try out a new build every time I promote. It adds a small amount of variation where there would otherwise be none.

It's not even about grinding so much, I just don't see the purpose.  I'm at 15 promotions total and while I can get killed very easily on the higher difficulties if I'm not careful  - I can still hold my own on Perilous. I dont see the point of promoting and turning Perilous into Routine, lets flip the question round. Why do you feel that you have to promote?

Plz see my response above. I probably will stop promoting once I feel like my stats are getting too high. It's not like BW thought ahead to give me the option of limiting my benefits prestiging.

I'm more of a banner completionist. I figure the promotions will come once I've reached 37,500 runs. ( to complete all character banners)

I am very weak to peer pressure though, and since it turns out most of my DAMP friends list are leaderboard Illuminati, I cave to promotion.

Because I don't want to.

And that's all the reason you need. I have started to promote characters though, since I like crits (as Cirvante stated above, lol), and I also would like my armor to have more protection than several sheets of paper.

I just use re-spec cards when I want to try out new builds. My main point still stands, I can more often than not complete Perilous games so I don't really see the need to promote any further. I'm not interested in getting on the leader-boards, it has no appeal to me but I can understand why some may promote for that reason.
