So the time has come to purchase a Play Station 4.
I normally wait a while before purchasing the current console.
Here are a few games I'm considering. Let me know what you think?
Elder Scrolls Online: I know. The game isn't that great. However I can think of two big draws for me. A game set in the beloved Elder Scrolls Universe (huge plus) and a flexible class system where each class has 3 unique skill lines and a whole bunch of shared skills. I've been told that Guild Wars 2 does all of this better so I might give that game a go.
Witcher 3: I haven't played Witcher 1 and 2. Perhaps I'll play these on my laptop first. Do these two games come with options for low end computers. My laptop wasn't built for gaming. I want to be able to play with a stable frame rate with minimal crashes (even if that means garbage graphics).
People keep telling me that the Witcher series is the best for role playing. So many decisions that change the world completely. Actions have powerful and meaningful consequences. Even decisions made outside quests (such as clearing out an area plagued with monsters) will lead to some interesting results. The characters, lore and world feel alive which is a claim that apparently only the Witcher series lives up to. I hope Play Station releases the entire trilogy so I can go through all three back to back.
Fallout 4: Yes! I've waited too long! I loved Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas! That said, I was hoping the game would look as gloomy as Fallout 3. Fallout New Vegas had better story and characters but the atmosphere was not bleak enough for my post apocalyptic tastes. Let's put it this way. FO3 was grey, grey and grey. FONV was yellow, green and some grey. Okay the trailer for FO4 has a diverse colour pallet (even during the post apocalyptic sections). Either way. The previous two games I played did not disappoint. Bring it on!
Dragon Age Inquisition: I love mages to be able to perform well in many different roles. These include: summoning, shape shifting, enhancing allies, weakening foes, healing allies, area of effect destruction, crowd control, illusions etc. Sadly from what I gather the mage is mostly elemental damage, a limited defensive tree plus specialisation that added some much needed variety. I love nuking mages but I prefer this for a game like Infameous where you're a one man army.
So what is the main draw for me? It's the story, lore, characters, romances, big weighty decisions, war table, crafting options etc. In addition being able to import decisions from previous games and play as a Qunari (FINALLY!) are really attractive to me! I'm going to wait for some more of the DLC though. I want to reach as high a level as possible so that I have lots of abilities at my disposal and explore as much of the story as possible.
The next Mass Effect game: You know what? I enjoyed the entire Mass Effect trilogy. Sure it didn't end as well as it could of, but heck I loved the characters, lore and universe. Oh and blowing up stuff with biotics, tech powers and the occasional combat powers never gets old. Like Dragon Age, this is one of the few universes where I pay attention to the dialogue and engross myself in the stories. So often in RPG's I skip the dialogue and think to myself "oh please stop talking! SHUT UP". In Mass Effect I'm thinking "Let's talk forever". Sadly there are times when I do want to talk and the crew mates are too busy doing stuff like "calibrations".
I'd like to do more exploring of the universe. Mass Effect 1 is the only game in the series with planet side exploration. It was a bit of a copy paste job so I'm hoping Mass Effect 4 expands on this.
The next Uncharted game: This is the kind of series that should in theory have disinterested me. Parkour got a bit dull for me during Assassin's Creed. Cover shooters (without funky powers) get a little dull. I'm not too fond of solving puzzles either. However none of that seemed to bother me in the Uncharted series. I felt like Indiana Jones rushing from one action set piece to another. It was mindless popcorn fun with me invested in the action. I ended up falling in love with Drake, Sully, Elena and Chloe as we globe trotted in search of some treasure whilst being hunted down by armed men.
Play Station All Stars: I love the Smash Bros games for the Nintendo. Sony's mascots are nowhere near as epic, but hey they do have some awesome characters too. Examples include: Kratos, Cole McGrath, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Zak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank and many more. Smash Bros is a celebration of my favourite Nintendo characters so perhaps Play Station All Stars is a celebration of my favourite Sony characters?
Assassin's Creed: Black Flag: I'm a little bored of the parkour and sneaky stabby stabby nature of these games. However swashbuckling, sailing, naval battles and looting some epic booty. Is this game more pirate orientated than the other Assassin Creed games? If so sign me up. As for story, I don't care. I just want to be a pirate ninja bad ass with a questionable moral code!
Grand Theft Auto 5: I might give this a try. I have heard great things about the game. The three different perspectives, lots of side activities and crazy missions sound interesting to me. I want to play as Trevor and go on a rampage!
Watch Dogs: A game about a guy who uses his smart phone to do all the things you can't do with a smart phone. It's basically GTA with hacking. Yes I know the plot is a little dumb, but hey I want to be a tech wizard!
Infamous 3: Flashy superpowers with sparkly boom boom action! So does this game deliver the goods like previous Infamous games or is it infamously terrible?
So what are your suggestions?
Obviously my list is RPG heavy, but I am open to all genres.
So maybe you've uncovered a shooter that is worth a mention, or a racing game that is truly unique. Perhaps it's an indie game that no one has heard of before.
