And as a side note, rapid fire weapons are supposed to overload shields faster in lore but doesn't sem to be the case in game.

and why is Overload so effective vs Barriers
and why don't armored player kits have Armor (krogan turian batarian etc you know all the ones that cant dodge because they supposedly have heavy armor)

What's the difference? That the owner of said Shields/Barriers are walking around Dead and don't know it yet.

Tech powers & tech burst combos own shields. Biotic powers & combos own Barrier. Why Biotics own Collectors.

Barriers are vulnerable to biotic powers, shields not so much. Barriers and shields are both vulnerable to some tech powers like Overload and Energy Drain.

Some things do more damage to shields than they do to barriers or Vice Versa
Banshee Warp balls seem to do more damage to the Justicar's Barrier than they do to the FQE's shields for one example
edit thought OP meant on the player character not enemies

Biotics don't work well on shields but work great on barriers. If you are talking about the player character, I'm not sure there is a difference.

I'm not a linguistics expert or anything, but I think Shields refers to policemen, and Barriers refers to grave diggers. Are there any etymologists in the house?

^ No, but I can still add to this. So I was right. Shields are the most evilest thing in the ME3mp universe. ![]()

What's the difference between a knight and a baker?

there really isn't one in this game except for colour of the bar. Unless it's an enemy, where biotics work well against the purple one but do hardly anything to the blue one, while tech powers do about the same to both (another reason why Tech is the Master Race).
The rapid fire weapons being better vs shields only applied in ME2, where most automatic weapons and shotguns got a large damage modifier against shields and barriers (1.35x damage was typical for SMG's and Shotties and 1.25x for AR's IIRC). ME2 in general was the game that introduced most of the differences in mechanics betweeen shield/barrier. In ME1 they were both represented by the same coloured bars and were functionally indistinguishable.

and why would anyone take incendiary ammo when they already have incinerate as a power, that's redundant

From a mechanic standpoint, there isn't much difference between enemy barrier and shields other than the damage modifiers of a few abilities that are primarily biotic ones.
Rapid fire weapons being more effective against shields was something in Mass Effect 2, but they removed it in 3.
As far as your personal shields/barriers go, the only difference is the colour of the bar.

A knight darts into the foe, and a baker... makes bread. ![]()
I miss the "use SMGs to take out shields" mechanic of ME2 sometimes, but then I get over it.

Shields and Barriers are like Quarian bum bums. Once it's exhausted, it's easier to penetrate. Drill rounds are recommended

Also like quarian bumbums, once barriers/shields are penetrated, they die.

What I don't understand is why biotics don't use both.
"Hey there, I'm a biotic.
To prove my awesomeness, I will use my mind to project a barrier over myself, exhausting myself in the process rather than using a readily available standard issue shield instead."
Wouldn't it make more sense to use the shield, and just throw up a barrier for extra protection when needed?
Err, on topic, and mechanics related rather than lore...
Yeah, the only difference seems to be that shields protect from biotics (and concussive shot) better than the biotic users themselves can. Meanwhile, barriers provide better protection against exploding geth. But not Atlas or Turrets. ![]()

Because if a kit could pop up shields at will that would be too op
