I think I am too stupid to use spirit blade

I am not a big fan of melee mages, but figured I should go ahead and play it at least once, so I specialized my Dalish inky as a Knight-Enchanter.

Here's the thing, though.  It doesn't seem to want to stay 'engaged' for lack of a better term.  I press the corresponding hotkey on the keyboard and I get one hit off and then my character automatically reverts back to her staff.   I am -not- out of mana, by the way.  Is this how spirit blade is supposed to operate?  If so, I am probably going to revert to a previous save and go with the vastly superior necromancy specialization.

Granted, it's highly probable that I, not being a smart man, am missing something incredibly basic here.   If that is indeed the case, could someone point out what that basic thing is?  Thanks in advance.

Keep pushing the hotkey to use the blade. It's like using a sword when attacking an enemy. Just have to keep pushing the hotkey

Not really.  To swing my sword for my 2H or S&S warriors, I click my left mouse button while I am maneuvering with my keyboard.  I am pretty floored that they made spirit blade basically a "stand in one position and spam a keyboard button blindly" mechanic.  But okay, that does indeed answer my question, so thank you for that.  I wasn't doing anything wrong, it's just a ridiculous mechanic.  Reloading and going necromage.

In case anyone from Bioware reads this, maybe they should consider making it like walking bomb.  Activate it and it stays active (and flashing on the toolbar) until you either manually deactivate it early or you run out of mana.  At least that way, you can still maneuver around while fighting.

It might work to practice a bit with it on things like those annoying wolves on the Exalted Plains.  As your timing improves, you can really do some serious damage with the other abilities and passives KE has.  I took out a heavy duty bruiser in JoH using just the upgraded Fade Cloak and Spirit Blade, without anyone else preparing their first attack. I'm playing through for the first time (finally) and had the same issue a day ago when I took the spec. The solution was to use your key bindings and set it to my mouse key 4 (thumb) button.
