I apparently have an inferiority complex.

I haven't enjoyed playing my dwarf characters as much as my others and I didn't understand why. My DH just casually said to me yesterday,  "That's because you are already a dwarf and this game is supposed to be a fantasy. "

My question is this; How tall are dwarves, anyway?  I am 4' 11.5. Dwarves are shorter than that, right? He's not right is he?<_<

Dwarves average 4ft.

I base this on nothing more than the top 3 google search results.

So, then if I am a dwarf, which I'm not, that means I am really tall. A supermodel even. I can live with that.

Depends. Are almost as wide as you are tall, and do you have a beard reaching your belly button?

Not currently, but I can take my braids and hold them to my face and they kind of look like a beard...Does that count? Not very wide though, I can get into my clothes dryer if necessary...don't ask...

DAO dwarves appear to be somewhat taller than 4 feet on average, but 4'11" would be a pretty big dwarf.

I told him that Shakira is 4'11" and he says she's a dwarf too. I told him he just thinks we're dwarves because he is freakishly tall. He responded with "Dwarves are cute when they're angry"

Arrrgh.

How tall do you think someone has to be to count as "freakishly tall"?

I'm 5'11", and I think I'm a bit under-sized.

According to the Paralympics you need to be under 130cm (4'3") for female and under 137cm (4'6") for male to be able to compete as a dwarf. Seems like a reasonable cutoff point to me, I know a few people under 5 foot but would never have thought of them as dwarfs.

Of course the dwarfs in DAO do seeem a bit taller than that.

He is 6' 2" and I don't think that's freakishly tall, I was just being waspy. I was provoked. On the upside, no paralympics for me this year.

By Forgotten Realm's standards (which seems consistent with DA dwarves), a shield dwarf is 4'3" to 4'9". I guess about a foot shorter than the human standard so you're not quite a DA dwarf. Elves depend on the setting, DA:O Elves seem to be like FR Elves who are shorter than humans, OTOH Tolkien's Elves are taller than humans. With Elves it seems like a 50/50 split (even among the D&D settings) as to whether they should be taller or shorter than us. With humans it depends largely on your racial background. Depending on where you're from you could be average height.

Well, 5'11" is about an inch over the average. But that's over all races. Without being racist, Asian people are GENERALLY shorter, and considering there are a lot of asians, that brings the average down. I'm 6 ft, but I'm still going through puberty. Although, most men are probably 5'11" - 6'3" above which, you are tall. Not NBA tall, but tall.

Well, I'm 5' 7", if that makes you feel any better.

Though, I'm only 17, and I haven't really grown since middle school...

And there are tall people in my family (they just aren't my parents: my dad is like 5' 9 1/2" to 5' 10": decidely average).

*Anticipates a growth spurt*

Nope, still 5' 7"

Your low end is at the high end of the national averages, which are in the link I posted above.  The average male is about 5'9" to 5'10" in the developed world.

Hehe, all shorties.

In my family, I'm kind of middling height for a female at 176 cm. Most of the males (over 16 anyway) are 188 (the stumpy ones) - 200 cm, but some of those are still growing.

Urggh, metric conversion for imperialists: 176cm = something over 5' 9". 188 cm = 6' 2"; 200 cm = 6' 7".

The women in my family are pretty short in general, but I am the shortest. Lucky me. I am of mScottish/pWelsh Descent so I have no idea what that means as far as average heights.

I'd rather be an elf than a dwarf (no offense to dwarfophiles.) Wiki says the avg women's height in the us is 5' 4.5" So I am definitely below average, but not short enough to be considered a dwarf. :)

I'm 6 foot 4 mabey slightly taller and people say I'm freakishly tall. But I know someone who was about 3 or 4 inches taller than me, now he is a giant.

Any other tall people notice how you'll have people tell you things like, "My boyfriend's cousin is 2 inches taller than you!" I get that all the time, and I'm like, "...and you're telling me this because...?"  I may never understand why people think I would be interested in knowing how tall their relatives are in relation to me.

I get this sometimes but I also get the thing where people ask me how tall I am over and over and say "Wow, that's tall", "I wish I was taller". What, they couldn't tell I was tall by looking at me? And then they call me a freak despite admitting that they wish they were my hight.

At least I can reach the top shelf : )

Yeah, I have an upstairs stool and a downstairs stool. And even on them I can't change the air filters myself. But, like I said earlier, when it comes to hiding in the dryer being tiny helps. :) It's also easy to disappear in a crowd if you are being pursued. Um and uh...spelunking is easier. Okay, that's all I can think of right now.
