The body textures in Mass Effect 2 are worse than in Mass Effect 1! Is there a fix, a tweak or perhpas a patch in the making?

Posted Image

Vista Home Premium 64
Q6600
4GB
2x 4850 512mb
DirectX 10.0  (Mar2009) or later
Catalyst 9.12 hotfix (2x aa in driver, renamed to masseffect.exe, 16xaa in me2 plus all other video settings max, in driver mipmap on high quality)

All the body textures in Mass effect 2 look pixelated up close. Especially compared with helmets of the same armor. The helmets look just so much better, you know they do have the high-res texture for the body armor, but it is only showing the 'medium' or 'low' texture resolution. This happens with all the body textures throughout the game, although some are more obvious than others. Have a look at the screenshot above.

I have yet to see this issue - Have you tried backrolling/updating graphics drivers?

If that is the case, I'll have to test out some scenarios back home before I can be of any use,

Confirmed here, most body textures are indeed low LOD rather than high LOD. Really looks bad on uniforms and armour.

Using ATi Radeon 4890 on max settings...

I think this is actually by design- many of the loading screens are shorter to compensate for the lack of lengthy elevator rides and increased head detail. PCs have gotten faster but 360s have not. I somewhat hope that higher res-ed versions eventually get patched in for the high end PC crowd, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

I'm seeing the same thing. I'd love to find out how to fix this, if it's possible.

I really doubt this.  It comes across as poor presentation to have some higher res textures beside lower res ones.

Anyways, I am seeing this issue as well and I had the same problem with ME1.

I also notice this, it's a really glaring problem for a game which features close-ups of characters so often. Another example, much easier to see comparison between the nice hi-res face and the poor body:

Thanks for the screen Matterialize. And I'm glad that others can confirm the issue. It would be great if Bioware has a solution for this.

EDIT: It might be possible to change some settings in the ini files in the LOD settings...

There's also this thread about LOD funkeyness. http://social.biowar...06/index/800538

It seems the ini's and configs are really locked down this time, ie, compressed and totally not the standard UE3 settings/file names.

Having the same problem. Body textures look low/medium resolution and some parts of the terrain also looks that way. What REALLY bothers me is that I started out playing the game with no issues. Textures looked amazing first day i played it. Next day there were all messed up,clearly noticeable the lack of resolution.

Been googling for answers like crazy but zero results. Not even a hint

Yeah I think everyone here experiences the horrible low res textures on NPC bodies.

The most noticeable is the News reporter in the Citadel!

Bioware please adress this since it really takes away from the experience, when engaging in conversations etc, or please allow us to modify the files to allow for HIGH res texture packs/mods

Thank you for the great work.

You can see how crappy the armor looks.

argh. This is an annoying problem! Jack's tattoos look like crap in cutscenes. I'm very annoyed, but at least the game runs smooth. I just got the new AvP game and it is a port that is very suspect.

I've just recently noticed this too. I could've sworn that the body textures were hi-res at first... but I also had subtitles on then and since the game was fresh I may have not noticed any glaringly low-res textures. It's only been within the past week that I've noticed the low-res body textures. I probably should've taken screenshots of the game when I first started it up just so I could compare it to its current state to see if it's my memory or the game itself.

This is the biggest problem with the game. The textures look terrible close up. Like Paydirty said, Jack's tattoos are a mess in cutscenes.

Bioware keeps doing this with the damn textures if I want low textures I'll lower my damn settings!

I'll add my voice to the post. It's not so much a lack of high-res textures, it's that they've disappeared. On my first play through everything looked good, including armour and clothing on close-ups. Now however I am noticing that what looked good before seem to have been taken down a notch, and I can't figure out why.

FFLB, it's funny because I thought the textures were high res at first as well, but maybe I was mainly looking at the third-person shooter view (non-convo view). What I do now is look at faces during convos to distract me from the poor neck-down textures.
It's just aggravating because I bought a 2nd copy of ME1 on PC because of the high-res textures, and then Bioware/EA turns around and ports ME2 to save money.
Ringo12, there isn't even a setting for texture levels for ME2 :P
I feel like PC gaming is being disenfranchised by poor ports and that could further erode PC gaming.

The WORST is seeing the textures in the Squad page. UGH UGH UGH. Very distracting.
Is there a way to modify a *.ini file to fix this?

This is a shame since the face textures look great, yet the rest look astoundingly meh. I mean my PC can support the higher res textures- they clearly were able to do it in ME1 so why not just give PC people the option for higher res textures, even if it means longer load times?

I'm surprised this is the only thread about this here. I would think more PC people would demand the option of hi-res textures. With the powerful computers we have today it's absolutely moronic not to give the option of hi-res. Like Ringo12 said, if I wanted lo-res textures, I'd lower the damn settings myself!

This needs to be fixed and fixed fast with a patch. If you're running this game at 1920x1080 everything from neck down may as well be a Nintendo 64. Absolutely pathetic on the part of Bioware. I love the gameplay and story, everything is fantastic but there is no excuse for not giving us hi res textures. It's 2010 not 1996.

I would still like to see texture settings for ME3 PC version. I am running a dinosaur PC (Pentium D, not even Core2) and I can run the game with max settings at 30-60 fps while recording in FRAPS. There is a lot of untapped processing power. This is a minor complaint though. The textures only look bad during closeup conversations and graphics are still stunning in combat mode and normal cutscenes.

yeah this issue is very annoying. Seeing low res body textures next to high res faces this is unacceptable and it ruins the experience and immersion..I am hoping for a patch to adress this issue ASAP. At least a workaround hack via ini settings would be nice.
